“What are you doing in here?” you asked as you came upon your husband Taehyung by himself late one night in your newborn baby’s nursery.

His bare hands rested against the intricately decorated wood of the bassinet, adorned with tiny icy trinkets made by Taehyung himself with his magic, and he gazed thoughtfully down at your peacefully sleeping child. He started at the sound of your voice, turning around to face you and immediately locking on your curious eyes.

“Darling,” he smiled warmly at the sight of you, keeping his voice low and gentle so as to not wake the baby. “I was only checking on him.”

“My love, you’ve checked on him a dozen times in the past hour alone.” You let out a soft laugh.

“I know that, but I... I couldn’t sleep. I wanted to make certain he was all right first.” He said with a conflicted expression, casting his eyes back down to where your son lay sweetly dreaming.

“I know that face,” you tutted, recognizing your husband’s intricate mannerisms from a mile off. “What’s troubling you?” you asked him directly.

“Do you... do you think I’ll make a good father?” he questioned, his gaze returning to you at last, only now it was clouded with deep uncertainty. “I’ve been worried since I didn’t exactly have the best experice with my own father that... I just don’t want to make the same mistakes.” He couldn’t seem to look you in the eye as he said this, bowing his head in shame, and you made your way over to him without hesitation, gently lifting up his chin until his eyes met yours again.

“Taehyung, you are not your father,” you firmly reminded him, cradling his face in your hands. “You are going to be a wonderful father to our son, I’m certain of it,” you assured him without a trace of doubt in your voice. You had no doubt to be spoken. You loved Taehyung more than anything and you had steadfast faith in him.

“You truly think so?” he replied, his face lighting up adorably at the certainty behind your words.

“I know so.” You nodded, grinning up at him.

He beamed back at you, and it was only mere moments before he was closing the small gap between your mouth and his own, leaning down to steal the sweetest of kisses from your lips.

“I love you,” he softly murmured once you’d parted for air, resting his forehead lovingly against yours. “You’re going to make such an amazing mother,” he happily declared in turn.

“I love you too,” you replied without hesitation, gazing down at your slumbering bundle of joy. “I’m so happy to be starting our little family.”

“Me too.” He joined you in cooing adoringly down at your son. “We’ve only just had our first child and already I am thinking of how nice it’d be to have more.” He chuckled, a playful smile sitting upon his lips. “How does 10 sound?”

“10?!” you whisper-exclaimed, your eyes going wide at your husband’s cute but very ambitious idea. “Let’s take it one at a time.” You chuckled.

“Fine,” he reluctantly coalesced, wrapping his arms around your waist and holding you tightly to him. He brought his lips up to your ear, his breath warm on your skin as he whispered to you; “Why don’t we get started on number 2?”

He lightly sank his teeth into your lobe, nibbling at it teasingly, and making you struggle to hold back your squeal of delight which would surely awaken your sleeping child. You could already feel yourself heating up at the mere sound of your husband’s proposal, and your leaned into his tender touches, his wide palms rubbing tempting circles across your trembling back.

You looked up into his glimmering sapphire eyes, a fire burning in them that was reflected in your own. “I’d like that.” You coyly replied.

The two of you grinned at one another, giving your son one last good once over to make sure he was still safely slumbering before slipping out of his nursery, and heading back to your own chambers, giggling madly as you went.

Chapter Eight... Home, Again.

Chapter Eight... Home, Again.

Has no one ever told you not to rifle through old attics? Has no one ever told you that if you find old vintage rings that seem to have a mind of their own, the one thing you should definitely not do is to wear them? Well maybe they have, but it’s October 31st and you’re in desperate need of good accessories. And as such the next thing you know, there is a man named Yoongi in your bedroom and he insists that you’ve just married the King of the Otherworld.

▶ t/w: murder, fighting, cannibalism, vomiting just gross stuff cause there's mermaids involved, angst, drowning, burning someone to death, mature audiences that are not squeamish advised

Chapter Eight... Home, Again.

You grow vaguely aware of someone’s comforting caresses on your back as the world teeters from left to right and you can’t. Stop. Projecting. Everything out. The calming patter encourages not to keep anything down, says it’s going to make it worse but how could it possibly get any worse after everything you just saw.

When you finally slump, having given it all with some discontent you see not Yoongi by your side but Jimin and it’s not the world that’s swaying but just the boat. You groan wincing at the dour taste in your mouth, letting your damp forehead rest on the wooden edge. At this rate you’ll develop aquaphobia. Jimin scrunches the sleeve of his silk shirt, wiping away the cold sweat.

“It’s not long until the palace,” he mutters meant to comfort you but if anything it has the opposite effect.

Yoongi is there, you know he is and you don’t have the slightest clue of how to react anymore. You feel everything. All and every emotion humanity has vollectively ever felt rages through you and you want to baw like a child at the face of such monumental anguish. You hate him and you love him, you want to kill him, strangle him to repay at least some of the pain he put you through and you want to cradle him in your arms, whispering how you forgive him because it’s Yoongi and if souls were true then you were made of one.

You gasp for breath when your lungs begin to burn. No matter how much oxygen you pull in, it’s not enough. The sense of asphyxiation puts you in a chokehold of primal fear and you begin to trash around, clawing at your throat.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay, it’s okay,” Jimin tries to pacify your panic but doing so he puts his hands on both sides of your cheeks and it reminds you so starkly of how Yoongi held you both in his madness and health, that you choke even harder. Quickly, Jimin unhands you, timidly resting his fingers instead on your knees - a relatively safe zone.

“Is this okay?” he asks nervously, echoing your panic. Slowly you climb down from the terror, gasping in and out with your eyes closed. If only you would see darkness and not Yoongi passed out on the floor with his face mauled open. Tentatively still trembling but no longer fearing that you would die (again that is), you open your eyes. The air is cold and damp, fog rolling over the surface of the canal. Jimin is there, eyebrows scrunched up in worry, searching for any signs of distress on your face of which there was plenty. At least, he’s no longer blue meaning whatever drug had coursed through you had been successfully exorcised.

“Why would you ever use such a thing,” you mutter, running a clammy hand through your hair. They’re all knotted.

“I don’t feel the effects as harshly as you. It seems your prolonged residence in human work has distanced you from certain fae benefits.”

You hadn’t even thought of how technically you weren’t even human. Humans after all didn’t revert to infancy after dying. But that’s not what causes you to pull your head up from the safe haven of your thighs, to nail Jimin down with an astonished glare.

“You know? How much do you know?!”

He looks guiltily to the side, wetting his dry lips.

“Uh… sort of everything? It’s a bit awkward to explain, I’m your - ” he blushes bright pink, reminding you of his hair when he came to the orphanage all those years ago.

“What?” you push on and if possible he flushes even more.

“I guess you could say I’m your fan,” he mumbles, drumming his fingers energetically against your kneecap. “You probably don’t recall it but I come from Nyavena, nymph faction, and you’re quite popular there.”

Maybe if you rattled your brain enough, you could faintly remember some bits of fragments about a certain food shortage that you once helped to fix but that was also the time your brother was sent to dungeons, so Nyavena and its problems had escaped your viewing focus.

“I also did my dissertation on you, so I had to dig up a lot of old documents and court stories that Yoongi probably wouldn’t like to know about.”

At the mention of his name, you recoil, feeling that crushing hold, grip around your heart once more.

“Nymphs have universities?...” you quietly wonder, desperate to distract yourself from the imminent descent.

“Gotta get our education somewhere,” Jimin remarks with a light chuckle. You can’t produce your own.

“Is that why you didn’t tell me when I was little?” you ask and he falls sombre

“I...” he stammers, running through his dishevelled hair. “Well, how was I supposed to tell you all this?” he gestures vaguely around and you notice that the boat is in fact steering on its own.

“You were only eight years old then, it’s not a story you tell a kid. But mostly and please, please, do not relay this to Yoongi,” you gaze at him blankly while Jimin struggles to get the words out, his tapping increasing in speed.

“I love Yoongi like a brother, I really do but what you both had or have is just too damn tragic.”

“Who is he to presume on such things?” a sharp voice hisses in your ear though you can’t tell who does it belong to - the King, Yoongi or you.

“If I would tell you who you were or what that ring is, it… it would haunt you. Even if you wouldn’t take it, I don’t think one could ever forget about it. When I read about your...death,” he grimaced, “ I felt really sorry for you and I didn’t want for the history to repeat itself.”

“So the story about Vegas?”

Jimin chuckled self-consciously.

“Oh, a complete lie. I popped by your school’s party and trust me I had enough. I went home pretty soon after that, mulled around my parents' house and then returned back to Yoongi.”

“What did you say to him?”

“Said that I found you as promised and left you a note to read when you’re old enough.”

“That’s why when Yoongi came - ” you begin and Jimin finishes.

“- he thought that you’d forgiven him and I guess were ready to get hitched after the world’s longest engagement.”

You sink deep in thought, recalling that Halloween night.

“I’ve come to take you home, Your Majesty.”

Not a disinterested title but a childhood nickname, a very Yoongi way of saying -

“Let’s get married, baby” or whatever went through his mind that moment.

“Last time I saw him,” you start with a croak in your throat.

A quick cough. Continue.

You don’t want to but what choice there really was.

“He was not in a good...state.”

“A soft way of saying he was five miles out of his mind.”

Could you comprehend what amusement was right now, you’d at least smirk at Jimin’s honesty but the wound was still too raw to be covered up with humour.

“Is he...alright now?”

Jimin ponders for a long time, so long it makes you worried.

“He’s not... he doesn’t throw fits anymore, he doesn’t abuse his power. After you...left, Joon made him seek counselling.”

“Joon?”

“Namjoon, current Court Secretary.”

Oh, you remember him. The bespectacled man by the well.

“He’s trying. He’s been trying so hard. I don’t make any excuses for his behaviour in the past but I have nothing bad to say about him now.”

“Hmm…” is all you can reply.

“Jin and I were most worried about your return,” Jimin admits quietly, “your...departure shocked him so much, I guess it forced him to revert back to some sanity but we were worried that if you were around, he’d fall back into old habits.”

“You’re saying I make him crazy?” you don’t ask out of defensiveness or insult but out of genuine curiosity. No matter how hard you toss or turn, every decision seems wrong. Leaving Yoongi is similar to trying to cut out your liver using a nail file but you couldn't just run up to him like an eager puppy, yapping “of course I forgive you, I don’t care that I died and was made an orphan because of you.”

That’s not how this worked, did it? You had your hurt and he had his.

“I’m not saying that! You’re both very complicated people who love each other very much, any idiot can see that,” Jimin replies, shrugging, “but the baggage you both have is quite heavy and the whole idea of soulmates -”

Every hair on the back of your neck stands up at once.

“What is that?” rips out of you before your natural senses actually received the message of danger.

The water that previously had been smooth is boiling now, but it’s not really boiling. Something is just swimming very fast after your boat. Chasing it down.

A pair of white, lidless eyes poke through the water surface, narrowing you down with a contemptuous glare. Suddenly a smell of rotting fish overclouds your mind.

“Jimin!”

Chapter Eight... Home, Again.

Yoongi felt sick coming back here, to the throne room. These four walls held his grief, his pain and madness. He used to think that if he shut the doors tight enough, he’d be able to seal it away, finally control the poison that seeped from him. It was but a naive hope. He still feels sick when he leaves the room and when he closes his eyes he still sees you disappearing down the well and it didn’t matter whether he was here or at the end of the world. That moment ran deeper than the scar carved on his face.

He shook his head and let the blaring bells of the court grip him into a new alarm. Below him, the first defence line was already caught in a vicious struggle. The problem with the city canals was that they ran everywhere, forcing the soldiers to divert their attention to at least three other places. Merfolk couldn’t get far on the ground, the ability to briefly grow limbs had been bred out for most of them since their exile to Western waters but they could jump. Flinching, Yoongi saw how one of them propelled herself out of the water, unhinging her jaw making her head go backwards with a speed that no one around had even the inkling to run. The unlucky guard was thrown on the pavement and dragged in water before being mauled to pieces all in the span of a second. The court was gripped with wet, squelching sounds as merfolk ate their comrades, occasionally gurgling back undigested parts and hurling them at the remaining fighters.

“Where’s Hoseok?” he growled at Taehyung who was readying a spear.

“I don’t know, I can't find him anywhere.”

That’s just what Yoongi needed.

Chapter Eight... Home, Again.

Your hands stink from the force with which you wack the merman off the boat. Despite Jimin pushing your boat along, using his own created breeze, they are fast. You clutch the oar with a peculiar mix of horrendous rage and paralyzing dread, whipping around the small circle of the boat, trying to somehow predict where they will spring next.

But the space is small and unbalanced. One careless step and you’re dead. A sharp hacking pulls you to the left. Claws gripping the wooden edge, a mermaid hauls their body through the water surface, mouth spread wide open so hard their eyes literally move back and you’re forced to stare down a row of rotting jagged teeth. With no hesitation whatsoever you force your screaming muscles to work and bash the head of the attacker. Black blood spills over your oar as their webbed hands grow limp and release the boat.

“Just a little bit,” Jimin shouts, keeping his eyes on the approaching palace.

There are lights and screams coming from there but it’s still better than being crowded by clawing monsters on a single plank of wood. Seeing the approach to relative safety, they start ramming into the boat, swaying it dangerously close to tipping over. You push to poke one of them but they rip the oar away from your hands. No weapon left and judging from how hard Jimin was panting he would run out of energy any time soon.

You sink underneath the slab of stone that guides the water canal into the inner court. Your feet can barely find the balance anymore. When you came out, you had to jump or risk being dragged into the water. The jump is awkward, not leaping simply away but also somehow upwards. Jimin jumps first almost gracefully and you follow after him, the boat immediately being turned upside down. You already land on your chest against the floor when you’re sharply hauled backwards, claws tearing off the skin at your ankle.

Jimin shouts after you as your nails scrape against the smooth stone trying to hold onto something, anything. The merman who has your leg unhinges his jaw, intending to make you a quick meal. You can see someone’s fingers stuck in his teeth. Then you suddenly slip free and the merman is impaled straight down his mouth with a silver spear. Shivering and distantly screaming you haul yourself backwards and Jimin helps you up.

The court is faring no better and while you’re out of the lion's den you’re now facing a wolf. All around there are mermaids springing like sharks out the water, picking off the Imperial knights at a rapid pace. Sometimes they miscalculate the jump and writhe on the ground where they are slaughtered but even you can see that the tide was in their favour.

“Hello again,” Taehyung greets you pleasantly, loading an arrow into a crossbow and shooting into the eye of a nearby attacker. “Had a good walk?”

He smiles at you nicely, as a classmate would in a hallway, but the side of his face is smeared with black blood and his eyes have double brown pupils.

You don’t reply to anything and he continues just as gently even when he lodges an arrow into the hand of the mermaid and kicks her straight off the ground and into the water.

“Jimin, would you be so kind as to escort her to a more civil place? Our Majesty, really shouldn’t be seeing this.”

Jimin nods grimly, dragging you quickly away as you haphazardly dodge bows and stray attacks. You look back at Taehyung and he waves cheerfully at you and without looking, pulls an arrow from his quiver and stabs a sneaking mermaid through their ear. You retch.

The scent of rot is everywhere and remembering all the horrible things that happened here makes you think that this place is more than just cursed, it’s hell.

“I need to find Yoongi,” you shout over the battle noises and Jimin curses as one mermaid glides over your head, nearly missing the target. “I just want to know he’s alive.”

“Of course, he’s fine ________,” Jimin yells back, not unkindly but you can see that he’s worried you both won’t make it to the palace. And even if you do, the outlook right now was grim. “He’s the King, we all protect him with our lives.”

But those lives are running out, swallowed whole down the throats of the mermaids and then vomited back. You can barely stand.

Jimin does manage to haul you right to the Imperial doors but he is tripped down a flight of stairs. A mermaid, choking as she is out of the water and injured, hisses and starts dragging Jimin closer to her, unsheathing her long teeth to bite his head off. The palace is illuminated by a few torches and you, wavering underneath its weight, push the flame against the mermaid's spine. The tortured scream it lets out is horrifying and crying you have to remind yourself that if you let go Jimin could die, when it stops screaming you let go of the torch and unceremoniously vomit all over the stairs. The scent of the burnt corpse invades your nostrils.

As you look up, through the many spears and weapons you notice a man on a black horse. He’s wielding a longsword and on his head sits the imperial crown, the same one that was used to carve up his face. Yoongi looks like Death itself, clad in black armour, it’s glistening as it catches the roaring flame of the Imperial torches nestled against the palace walls. He slashes and hacks with wild abandon and the knights follow him suit, inspired to fight for their lives, inspired to give their lives for their Emperor. Their (perhaps) Mad King. Yoongi’s horse, Holly, the one you fed many apples trudging away from Brary, turns around to kick the attackers with his hind legs and doing so puts you and Yoongi directly in each other’s sight.

He knows you know.

You can see it from the way he closes his eyes in pain and regret.

And because of it he doesn’t see the biggest mermaid yet launching in a murderous rage and knocking him off Holly, his sword clanging against the ground as it falls from his hand.

You run.

You just run.

You don’t feel fear or anything. It’s like what you see is not even real. You yourself are not even real. Just a body moving without its mind. You drop down and slide right between Yoongi and the mermaid at just the exact moment when she lets her claws fall down, slashing towards Yoongi’s neck.

You close your eyes, hoping that this time he won’t mourn you to another suicide attempt.

You can hear him breathe beneath you and you focus on that sound, wanting to hear it when you die. You don’t want to end up like her, the other you that had died alone, atop of a strange world, broken and abandoned. But the pain doesn’t come and neither does death, what comes are Yoongi’s arms wrapped around your stomach in a tight hug. You crack open one of your eyes and see the mermaid struggling on the ground, a few meters away.

In your mind, you’re back in your kitchen. With Yoongi’s hand around yours as the large knife sways in your birch wallpaper. You look down on the ring and it glistens as it hadn’t even before, ferociously like a protective beacon.

You and Yoongi scramble up as the large mermaid crawls forward, clamping her jaws shut like you’ve seen alligators do. You both grasp around Yoongi’s sword, the one that you now know your brother had gifted him for good luck when the previous Emperor was usurped. You allow yourself the weakness of looking at him only to find that he is looking back at you. Tears are running down his face as he tugs your fingers tightly against the sword hilt. You know he knows you know. Neither of you know the answer of how to fix this, of how to live with the trauma you caused each other, or how you could learn to love again, anew. But you decide you’ll learn, you’ll find the answers because this was your life and all that mattered was that you and Yoongi were happy, not how happy it might make others.

You clasp his fingers back, trying to mutely express your new foundings.

“I’LL KILL YOU!” the mermaid snarls, advancing further but you and Yoongi, hands entwined on the sword, strike her down before she can fulfil her threat. As you near their face, you can recognize that stench.

“Stupid thing,” she had hissed, “you should have stayed away."

But how can one mermaid know who you were, where you came from and where you were originally from?...

You look into the white eyes and the snarls and you finally grasp that one detail that was mulled in the backdrop of your mind.

Bodies don’t fall without jumping. You had stood here, in this palace courtyard, atop of the well, meaning to jump but you hadn't jumped didn’t you. You fell backwards, tugged by an unknown force that had sprung up and was hidden from the sight of the approaching court.

With that notion, you drive the sword through her heart without any straying remorse.

The mermaids howl all around, trashing in the water. Their dead comrade had been a bigger and better fighter than any of them, undoubtedly you had just executed their leader but it doesn’t make them lose their spirits, it enrages them to a degree they abandon all preservation. Heedlessly, they leap out of the water, push themselves against blades, scream until the ears of the bystanders start bleeding.

Yoongi grips your elbow and drags you to the safety of the palace where the burnt mermaid lay. There’s no Jimin around and you pray that he is safe. Your exit is cut off by a dripping man, his hair is red and he has a distinct, kind face despite the fact that he was drenched in black blood.

“They’ve taken the palace,” he screams, “they used the plumbing to get inside, it’s not safe, Yoongi.

“Hoseok, gather Taehyung and the rest, push back, away from the canals,” Yoongi orders. His grip on your arms is so strong, it starts tingling. You don’t mind, in fact, you relish this small reminder that you’re both still alive.

Yoongi looks around in panic. There was no exit. Wherever the sight landed, there were intruders and falling knights. He whimpered, desperately trying to seek some escape and then his gaze landed on the well.

You understood him the moment the thought nestled in his head.

“No, no, please, I don’t want to go!”

You plead but Yoongi turns a deaf ear, dragging you towards it, across the bodies of his subjects and of his enemies.

“Please Yoongi, I don’t want to go, please, I love you, you idiot, I don’t want to leave you!”

His expression wrenches in torment as he mutely sobs yet he doesn’t stop and when you come next to the mouth of the water well, you feel a cold dread crawl through your skin. You capture his dirtied face in your palms, mimicking his favourite gesture and even through his misery he nuzzles into your hands, almost on an instinct.

“Please, I love you, don’t abandon me,” you beg and press a kiss on his lips. He responds gently, not clawing, not tearing, not demanding anything, just echoing the movement of your lips so tenderly as though he thought it was a dream.

“I love you,” he says, voice barely above a whisper, “I’ll love you forever and after that.”

You hook your hand around his neck and the chain that was hidden underneath his armour plops out of their confines, revealing the same golden ring, glowing bright on your hand.

He presses his forehead onto yours, breathing deep and before you can beg anymore pushes you right down the well.

You fall, down, down and down, seeing Yoongi’s ghastly, tortured grimace watch after you until you breach the surface of the worlds and he disappears. The void between separate realities is filled with many things. None of them make any sense, they’re nightmarish and sick, but even so you feel alone. You fall and fall and fall until it finally breaks and you hit the hard, cold ground, rolling through the Hell Mouth.

You pant.

There is only silence.

The air is cold and the night is dark and there are stars twinkling above you.

No screams, no slaughter, no Yoongi.

You become still, unable to move or do anything as the horrid realization of your whereabouts settle in.

You were back home.

You look down on the ground. Your hand is empty.

The ring that had hugged your finger so tight, you thought no one could ever remove it, is laying away, partially hidden underneath brown leaves.

You reach towards it and the glimmer in its searing brown stone that reminds you of the colour of Yoongi’s eyes begins to shudder until it dies down entirely

Chapter Eight... Home, Again.

“Was this uh… decoration?” Maeve asks kindly as she wretches the lodged kitchen knife from your wall. You don’t respond, choosing to pick up the Galadriel dress that was still on your floor.

Time ran differently in the Otherworld as you realized and the week that you spent with Yoongi was but one hour in the human world.

You returned back home the same night you left, as if you hadn’t just lived two different lives as two different and yet somehow the same women. You had stumbled and fainted in Bill Sandyman’s yard, the one whose daughter was still probably gasping underneath some vampire’s warm mouth. The intoxicated horde that you had partied with was admitted into the one hospital that Sallington had and bucking underneath the weight of many drunken students, no one paid any attention to the nature of your injuries.

When Maeve came to collect you with her green Moskvitch she had joked that of course only you could stumble upon more trouble in the comfort of your own home, but you hadn’t listened to her, merely wrapping around your arms around her neck, trying to delude your brain into thinking that it was Yoongi who you held onto.

She grew suspicious but seeing the morose, heartbroken expression she didn’t press further on it.

The week that followed wasn’t even the worst. Neither the week after that. Maeve stayed with you, trying to comfort you to the best of her abilities while remaining completely oblivious. The week after that you saw Lucia stray home and so you could corner her for some answers. She didn’t know that there even was an attack, she had been sleeping for the most part of it, recovering after the Long Ball.

The worst came in the summer as you began to lose hope that Yoongi will find a way back to you. You had tried, numerous times in a single day and those days after another, you had tried to crawl back to the Otherworld but the Hell Mouth remained a simple tree, and its carving revealed only moist, dark soil and not a bridge between the worlds.

The ring didn’t glow for a single day and no matter how hard you tried it slipped away from your finger. You resolved to wear it around your neck, like Yoongi had. And time moved forward.

Maeve was offered a job outside of Sallington and you encouraged her to go. You were wallowing, sinking in depression that no one could understand and you feared to explain, feared to confine her because of your own selfishness. So you let her go, towards a better life and she left like a beautiful bird, migrating to a better weather. She lived her life as she should.

No other resident of Sallington of which there were far more than you presumed, could open the gateway either. It was entirely shut and you were all left to maroon on top of your own world of normalcy.

The spring came and the summer came and then finally Halloween of the next year came. You were excited. You thought, he had come for you the last Halloween, maybe he would this time. He loved you, he would come.

Yoongi didn’t come.

But he still loved you, right?

He was still alive.

Right?

Halloween came and left. Just a single memory of you sitting soulless in your lonely kitchen watching a single, orange candle in the shape of the pumpkin melting away. You had made dinner for two that night. Yoongi could be hungry when he came to see you.

He didn’t come.

And then there came winter. Christmas. Coating Sallington in white blanket of comfort. Of course it being Sallington it resembled a Swedish crime drama and one would expect more to see Krampus on the roof rather than Santa nevertheless the people made it lovely. Carols, eggnog, family.

You sitting alone, on a snow covered porch, breath etching white clouds into the night air.

You had learned to fake cheer quite well for Maeve who couldn’t make it back home this year. You thanked for her gifts and received a happy thank you for the ones you’d given her. The phone call ended and you let the smile slip away from your face as you stared blankly into the outskirt of the forest.

Quietly you entered Ms Witterman’s children’s home and lay in your bed, the Christmas lights twinkling softly behind your closed eyes.

CREEEEEEEEEK.

Unmistakable.

The creek of your bedroom floor underneath the sole of an unknown intruder.

You didn’t open your eyes. This could be a dream and your heart would shatter if and when you woke up. You better hoped it was a robber, you’d know how to deal with that.

Your bed dipped behind you as cold arms wrapped tentatively around your waist, someone's nose nuzzling softly in your neck. You swallowed your tears, heart pounding in exhilaration and in fear that this was just another one of your delusions, conjuring a happy ending where there wasn’t one.

You reach to touch his hands and eagerly he intertwines your fingers in his.

This was real.

“Sorry for being late, Your Majesty,” Yoongi whispered in your ear.

summary: in which it’s jungkook turn to steal your clothes.

> fluff / wc: 2.4k

note: helloooo if you’ve already read this it’s because i had to repost :DD but i also changed it up just a bit !

jungkook is aware of his nickname as the laundry fairy. undeniably, doing the laundry is one of his favorite activities to do at home. separating the whites from the colors. smelling his favorite fabric softener. watching the clothes slosh around inside the circle in pure fascination. sitting in a corner scrolling through his phone while waiting for the washing machine and dryer to finish their jobs. while there is the satisfaction from finishing chores as an adult, he just simply loves fresh laundry. it makes him feel at home. at peace, even.

the household chores were already discussed and divided when you were still at the planning stage of moving in together. you were both afraid of them becoming a reason of constant arguments, so you made an effort to avoid that as much as possible. he quickly volunteered to do the laundry and the cooking, the fields in which he is already an expert in. on the other hand, you’re in charge of washing the dishes and cleaning. so far, this has been working well for you. even more, you help each other when you’re not busy.

if there is one thing he has come to love the most about doing the laundry in your shared home for the past year, it’s learning what your favorite pieces of clothing are. living together doesn’t mean seeing each other 24/7. of course, you have your own endeavors to attend to. he doesn’t see every outfit you change into. and so, he develops a deeper familiarity with you in this way.

moreover, by doing the laundry, he can see what kind of week you’ve been having. you’ve been staying at home for the past four days, only going out once the other day to restock groceries. therefore, your dirty laundry consists mostly of shorts and his oversized shirts. the simple outfit you wore outside stands out in the sea of neutral colors, and a random idea pops in his mind as he takes out the load of clothes from the dryer.

jungkook enters the living room casually, plopping down on the couch next to you with a small smirk visible on his lips. however, his presence goes unnoticed when you spare him not even a glance. your fingers dance around the keyboard, moving to a fast-paced beat of drums rolling in your head.

<<continuation of the previous part>>

“What’s going on?” you ask him.

Come to think of it, no one was in the living room. Are they all in Sian’s room with the kids?

“Hey, confused?” Yuna laughs, walking up to you with her hands behind her back. She stands next to Jimin and both of them are smiling at you in a way that was freaking you out… but also kind of endearing?

“A little, is it obvious?” you joke. Yuna laughs, coming up to hug you.

“I’m so happy for you,” she says with her arms around you.

“Thank you.. But why?” you say, raising your arm to hug her back but she pulls away.

“Please don’t tell me you’re as oblivious as him,” Jimin says. “Your wish is finally coming true. It’s finally your turn.”

“You guys are driving me nuts,” you say. You were starting to get emotional actually but you didn’t want to show your friends that. You can tell what was going on, at least you hope that it’s what you’re thinking. You weren’t going to shed a tear unless you know for sure.

Yuna winks at you and hands you the flower, the two then suddenly walk away, passing Taehyung and Bora.

“You know already what’s going on don’t you?” Taehyung asks you. There was a big smile on his face when he came up to hug you, handing you the flower after.

“I don’t know, I’m not sure… I think I do,” you say, making the two laugh. You laugh along nervously, your heart beats faster each time you receive a flower.

“I know we haven’t known each other for too long,” Bora tells you, “but I’m really honored to be a part of your special moment.” You pout at her, the tears threatening to spill as she leans in for a hug.

“Here’s another,” she says, handing you the flower.

“We’ll see you later,” Taehyung says, wrapping his arm around Bora’s shoulder and turning to disappear back into the hallway.

When the two are out of sight, Namjoon and Byul appear next.

“Looks like your hands are full,” Byul laughs, running up to you to give you a big hug. “I’m so excited for you,” she says all giddy.

“You better keep good care of these flowers Yn, they’re so beautiful,” Namjoon says, handing you another. “Just like you,” he tells you, before wrapping an arm around you and pressing a kiss to the top of your head. With each friend, the tears became harder and harder to hold in. “Our little sister’s finally getting her fairytale ending.”

“Here’s to another exciting year!” Byul says, with that, the couple turns and crosses another couple in the hallway.

“Jungkook kept his word, he said he’d be the next one to get married after us,” Hoseok tells you, with a wide smile. Both him and Sarang handed you a flower. The tears have fallen at this point.

“I’m so happy for you baby,” Sarang says, the two hugged you together tightly. “This is it!”

When they pulled away, for some reason the tears fell harder.

“Aigoo,” Hoseok says, bringing a hand to your head and petting your head. Sarang giggles, going in for a second hug and hugging you tighter.

“Save the tears, there’s more people coming,” she winks as she pulls away and the two held hands as they skipped into the hallway.

“Remember how I came to the group around the time of Jimin and Yuna’s wedding?” Sohyun says as she walked out of the hallway dragging Yoongi behind her, “then Hobi and Sarang got married… well… now it’s finally your turn!” You laugh as she leans in for a hug. “Maybe I’ll be next,” she whispers, giggling into your ear.

“What’d she say?” Yoongi asks you, you shrug in response. He hands you the flowers and so does Sohyun. This time, he was the one to lean in and whisper into your ear.

“It’s not too late to run,” he says, Sohyun gasps, pulling him away from you.

“Don’t listen to him,” she says, Yoongi flashes his gummy smile at you.

“No but seriously, I’m really happy and proud of you guys. I’m glad this is ending the way it is,” he says. “I’ll do my whole big speech thing at your wedding,” he says quickly turning around and walking away. Sohyun glares at him from behind but she turns to you, holding two fists up and mouthing ‘fighting!’. You giggle at her, wiping your cheeks as the next couple walks in.

“Finally,” Jin says as he and Mae walk out next.

“Finally that you guys are the last one to see me?” You say, arms full of flowers.

“Finally as in you’re finally getting what you want,” Mae says, hugging you. “See when you thought your plans were falling apart they were really just falling into place.”

“I can’t believe the maknae of the group is about to get asked the big question,” Jin says, joining in and wrapping his arms around the two of you. “I still remember when Mae and I first met you, back at my parent’s house when Minseok was just over a year old. Time flies, doesn’t it?”

“It sure does,” Mae says.

When she pulled away, she also had tears streaming down her face when she looked at you. Jin laughs at the sight of you two girls and takes a small pack of tissues out of his pocket, ignoring the fact that his eyes were watery too.

He takes two tissues out and hands one to his wife while the other he dabs on your cheek. Since you weren’t able to with one hand already around Mae and the other was holding the flowers.

Putting the kids aside, you were the group’s little girl. Being the youngest out of everyone. You’ve matured the fastest since you became a mom at an early age, but that aside, you were still the baby of the group. They’ve seen you as young as 18-19 years old. They practically raised you.

“Before your prince charming arrives, we have a little surprise for you,” Mae says, pulling away. The two walked over to the light switch, switching off all the lights, leaving you in the dark.

You hear some footsteps and all of a sudden, the light in the living room, and just that, turns on.

A gasp escapes your lips.

Both your parents and Jungkook’s parents stood around the coffee table.

You were standing so long in that spot where everyone approached you that your legs felt weak as you walked up to them.

“You guys are here,” you say, covering your mouth as the rest of your tears spilled out. Your dad was the first to come up to you and hug you, and you let everything out onto his chest. Your mom came around not too long after to hug you. And next, Jungkook’s parents.

As yours and Jungkook’s parents talked to you, sparing some words of wisdom and old memories, your friends were behind you preparing the next surprise without you knowing.

This is possibly the quietest they have ever been.

-

“I think it’s finally time, turn around,” your dad says. Okay well now more tears came out of your eyes as you met all twelve of your best friends face to face.

Twelve.

1) Namjoon

2) Byul

3) Jin

4) Mae

5) Yoongi

6) Sohyun

7) Hoseok

8) Sarang

9) Jimin

10) Yuna

11) Taehyung

12) Bora

Twelve?

“We have a problem,” Taehyung says, your heart skips a beat.

“What is it?” You ask, mid sniffle.

“We’re missing someone.”

“Jungkook’s not here,” Bora answers, fidgeting with her fingers.

Your mouth opens to say something but no words came out.

“But you might want to follow this trail of flower petals to find him,” Yoongi says, and at the same time, they all step aside and a trail of petals leading out the door appeared.

You look up at them in question and they shrug.

“Go on,” your mom says, pushing you towards the door.

You start walking past everyone, hugging the bouquet to your chest and staring at the flowers on the floor.

“Honey you might want to—“ your mom says as you walk into your door.

“Ow,” you let out, your friends laugh behind you as your mom sighs.

“You might want to open the door…”

As you walk out the, now open, door, the flower petals led to the stairs that led to the rooftop of your building.

Carefully, you quickly went up the stairs, your heart beating even quicker.

Stepping up the last step you were surprised to see Sian standing in front of you.

“Hi mommy,” he says, holding out his hand for you to take. “Come with me I’ll lead you to daddy.” You were about to start crying again as he seemed so much older when he said this. Being a gentleman and all as he led you to the otherside of the rooftop, where Jungkook stood, looking over the city.

Sian stopped midway and turned to you, pulling your hand, making you lean over to his height.

“I’ll leave you two now, I love you mommy,” he says smiling up at you.

“I love you,” you say. Sian stands on his toes to give you a kiss on the cheek, then whispering a ‘good luck’ before running off and back towards the staircase where you now see Taehyung at. You waited to see Taehyung hold Sian’s hand and disappear before turning to Jungkook.

You hold onto the bouquet with both hands now as you walk beside him.

You two stood there in silence as you watched the busy streets below.

“We stood here about 5 years ago when Sian was still a baby,” Jungkook says, he doesn’t look at you just yet but you turn your head towards him.

“Jin hyung and noona were in our apartment. We just moved in and we were both exhausted. Sian was a few months old and Jin hyung said that we should get some fresh air and not to worry because they’ll both watch Sian for us. I laughed and told him, ‘Fresh air? In Seoul? I’m good’ and you said thank you and grabbed my arm and dragged me up here. We were just starting our 20s and yet we stood here on top of the city, having our own apartment together and our first child. The sun was setting at that time and we stood here, watching the sunset and planning our future. We didn’t plan it well, but we said we’ll get Sian a dog when we get our own house, but first we’ll get married and maybe have a daughter next. It was either a second kid or a dog, whichever wanted to come into our life first. But to get any of that we needed a job, a good one because we just had enough for Sian at the time. Now we’re in our mid 20s. The sun is already set and the stars and the moon are out. We don’t have our own house, we don’t have another child, and we don’t have a dog. We’re not even married yet.” Jungkook turns to you and his eyes are watery. You smile up at him and he smiles back, but right when he does a tear slips out and runs down his cheek.

“Do you know what kind of flowers those are,” Jungkook asks, pointing to the bouquet you were holding.

“Your birth flower, Tiger Lilies,” you say, looking down at them.

“You remember the meaning of them right?”

You nod your head up at him. “Please love me.”

He nods at you, looking down and wiping his eyes before he looks back up into yours.

“I know I haven’t been the perfect boyfriend. And we still have a lot to learn and figure out about parenthood, our relationship, and even ourselves…” He finally takes out a small box out of his pocket and gets down on one knee.

“But we can figure out together and learn along the way. I might not have been a perfect boyfriend, but if you say yes, maybe I can be the perfect husband for you.” Finally, he opens up the small box and you see the most beautiful ring you could have ever been given.

“Please love me forever and marry me Yn.”

Of course you said yes.

Man of The Year (MYG x GN!Reader)

image

pairing: single dad!Yoongi x gn!reader genre(s): pure fluff, very minor angst au(s): graduation au word count: 2.7k warnings: some swearing, Yoongi is a little nervous, Yoongi is bad at flirting, this is so cute I could cry

rating: PG

summary: For the longest time, it’s always been Yoongi and his daughter, celebrating every milestone of life together. But today, that could change.

a/n: omg isi updating back to back fics? who is she? anyway this is inspired by that viral post of a little girl proudly taking pics of her dad on graduation day. thank you mars @joheunsaram for showing me the post and also letting me use her idea! i hope i did this justice. also inspired by one of my classmates who brought their little one dressed in a cap and gown to walk across the stage with them (so cute)! and big congrats to the class of 2022, i’m so proud of all the graduates, you deserve the world!!

listen to: man of the year by logic

image

A bead of sweat pools at the back of Yoongi’s head, sliding down his neck and into the special black robe he’d adorned. A heavy sigh escapes his throat. He’d probably have to get the robe dry cleaned. Another $10 spent on an item he’d never keep after today, and he knows money had been tight for the last little while. He’d barely been able to squeak by and pay Eunha’s school fees this month, begging his PI for a last-minute raise, who’d reluctantly acquiesced, knowing Yoongi was graduating soon anyway.

Yoongi resists the urge to scratch the itch that popped up mere moments ago and has now bloomed into a painful nuisance. Why were these outfits so damn scratchy? He’d never understand it.

“Appa,” his ears perk up at the small voice, the tiny hand clutching his own, and his fingers wind tighter around Eunha’s. “I have to go to the bathroom.”

➺ what to expect; "well, maybe the reason why you're just friends is because the two of you won't allow yourselves to be more than that."

➺ smitten: part one [the almost confession]

»»————- 🖤 ————-««

[previously, on smitten...]

what?

where the hell is it?

you reach into the side pockets and you're disappointed when you end up pulling out old tissues and empty gum wrappers

it's not in the front pocket either — just your keys, a pack of bubblegum, and a small bottle of hand sanitizer

your brows knit together in deep thought as you settle back against your seat, your eyes flickering to the side as you-

you immediately pale

oh my god.

you're positive that your heart stops beating for three whole seconds the moment you realize where exactly the note is — because no, you idiot, you didn't shove it into your own bag earlier-

the note is in jungkook's bag.

»»————- 🖤 ————-««

the next thirty or so minutes of class seem to drag on at a snail's pace and you find yourself checking the time on your phone every five seconds to see when you can finally dart out those doors

your first instinct was to immediately get up and leave because of course you wanted to immediately get up and leave, but with only twenty-ish people in the class and the fact that you're seated near the front... well, it would be a little awkward to just pack up your things and trek up towards the doors without a legitimate excuse (you were tempted to tell your professor that your stomach wasn't feeling very good but the thought of your peers associating you with explosive diarrhea quickly changed your mind)

so, you decided to be a good student and wait it out — but, being perfectly honest, you haven't really been paying much attention to the professor since the thought of you shoving your hi bestie, i'm head-over-heels in love with you note into jungkook's bag instead of yours contaminated your mind five minutes ago

...

you let out a little huff before shaking your head to yourself

how could you be so careless?!

you don't even know how it happened

your bag was sitting on your right thigh, jungkook's bag was sitting on your left thigh... so how the hell did you manage to shove it into his bag??

on the bright side, at least you know where it is, right?

it's in the right side pocket of the bag, so all you have to do is unzip it and stick your hand in and out really quickly without jungkook noticing you rummaging around in his belongings

...but what he's already read the note?

your foot taps impatiently against the carpeted ground and you reach up and start tugging at your earlobe anxiously, your eyes flickering up towards the dusty analog clock hanging on the wall

c'mon... c'mon...

your grip tightens around your pencil as you continue to trace circles aimlessly on the page, the paper crinkling slightly from the amount of pressure you're putting on it

the stress that's currently eating away at you is probably going to take ten years off your life

"-so, that's pretty much it from me for the day!"

you don't think you've ever been so happy for a class to end as soon as the screen goes black at the front and you waste absolutely no time in packing up

you probably look insane trying to shove your laptop and your notebook into your bag at the same time but you couldn't care less at this point because you need to get the hell out of here

"-please remember to contribute to the discussion threads online... at least four responses, please, and none of those bullshit 'yes, i agree!' responses. i'm definitely not going to count those as participation marks-"

you close your bag with a sharp ziiiip! and you hurry to fold the squeaky desk back into place, a couple of people turning to glance at you for the sudden abundance of clattering and knocking coming from your direction

"excuse me, pardon me-" you pull your backpack on as you step over multiple sets of legs, trying your best not to trample on any feet or knock anyone's tooth out with your bag, "sorry! excuse me-"

you can feel the adrenaline pumping through your veins as you jog up the steps two at a time, your brain immediately mapping out the route to the library jungkook said he'd be at

best case scenario: he hasn't found the note and your friendship with him is still very much in tact

worst case scenario: he found the note and is currently reading it at this point in time and your friendship with him is starting to crumble but you still have a chance to swoop in and pick up the pieces

the absolutely worst case ever in the entire world scenario: he's found the note, he's read the note, he's processed the note, and your friendship with him has been completely annihilated and now he's planning to change his name and leave the country so that he doesn't have to confront you about it

you use your shoulder to shove the doors open before bursting out into the open air, ignoring the concerned glances you're starting to receive from your obviously frazzled state

"oh god, oh god, oh god-!" your backpack flops wildly against your back as you rush down the narrow brick steps leading towards the main boulevard

realistically, jungkook's probably found and read the note, so all you have to do is come up with a short monologue about how all of it was fake and that the note was just a sick, twisted prank of some kind

i know that the note makes it seem like i'm telling you that i'm in love with you, but that's not the truth at all!

"woah, watch it-!"

you accidentally knock into someone's shoulder while sprinting down the lane and you turn around for a second just to hold a hand out while flashing the stranger a sheepish smile

"sorry! so sorry-" you turn back around, reaching up to keep your glasses secured on the top of your head as you continue to sprint, your sneakers slapping down against the pavement

as you read in the note, i made a point about how since we're friends, we should be honest with each other... and honestly, there are nothing but lies in the note! and there's a lesson in that, you know? words can be full of lies but we, as human beings, should be full of truths-

"nope, hate that-" you shake your head and immediately scrunch up that mental piece of paper before tossing it into your brain's garbage bin

you'd sound like an obnoxious philosophy student if you hit him with that explanation

it was a prank! i want to start a prank war with you and this is how i'm kicking things off!

that... that could work, right?

that's not bad!

just tell him that you wanted to start a prank war with him so you decided to go big or go home with an i love you, best friend note to see how he would react!

"so stupid-" you mutter to yourself, slowing down to a jog as you approach the doors to the library, "so, so stupid-"

the Super Epic Prank War ROFL XD™ explanation isn't the greatest excuse but it's the best you can do on such short notice

thankfully, it doesn't take you very long to track down jungkook considering the fact he always sits in the same area every time the two of you come here

your feet come to a screeching halt the moment you spot him and you quickly step to the side to hide behind the wall

you slowly lean over a little to peek at him

he has his headphones on and he's busy typing away at his laptop and you can tell he's concentrating really hard because he has that cute frown on his face and occasionally he'll mutter something to himself

jungkook in intense focus mode is something you find to be very endearing :-)

...

you quickly shake your head to snap yourself out of your daze before focusing on jungkook's face again

he certainly doesn't look like he just read an explosive love letter...

hm

you could still be safe!

...for now, that is.

"okay, y/n-" you stand up straight and let out a breath, giving yourself a mental pat on the head in an effort to calm your nerves, "better sooner than later, right? just- you just have to rip it off like a bandaid-"

your anxiety seems to build with every step that brings you closer to jungkook and you can almost hear the jaws theme song playing all around you

da-dum

jungkook, i swear i have a perfectly logical explanation for this...

da-dum

i know the note does a very convincing job of making it seem like i'm in love with you, but that couldn't be farther from the truth!

da-dum, da-dum

consider this your initiation into our very serious prank war, my friend!

dadumdadumdumdumbdumbdumbthisissuchadumbdumbidea-

"hi!" you greet a little too enthusiastically, trying your best not to make it seem like you just sprinted across campus to get to him even though you very clearly did

"sorry, seat's reserv- y/n?" jungkook looks up from his laptop before frowning, quickly glancing back down at his screen to check the time as he pulls his headphones off to hang around his neck, "aren't you- didn't your class end, like, literally a minute ago? why are you so- did you run here??" he asks incredulously, getting up from his seat as his brows knit together in concern

"no, no! of course i didn't run here, silly- oh, god, give me a sec-" you wheeze, bending down and gripping onto the back of the wooden chair in front of you as you try to catch your breath, your chest still falling and rising at a concerning pace from the physical stress of sprinting and the mental stress of the current situation, "it was more of a- of a brisk walk, if you think about it- jesus, i think i'm gonna throw up-"

"okay, you need to drink some water- come and sit next to me-" jungkook reaches out to help lead you around the table towards him, "god, i don't know why you thought you had to run over, it's not like i was planning on going anywhere-"

"i'm fine, kook, it's fine-"

"you're, like, literally radiating heat," jungkook turns you around and pulls your bag off your back before pulling out a chair and helping you into it, "and your face is all red!" he frowns, setting your bag down on the table and unzipping it to pull out your water bottle

"my face is always this red!" you force out a casual laugh, waving your hand to dismiss him as you lean back against the seat, "i'm fine, it's fine-"

"shut up and take a sip-" jungkook untwists the cap of your water bottle before shoving it into your hands and gently lifting it up towards your mouth, his head tilting up a little so he can check and see if you're actually drinking anything, "c'mon, hydrate yourself-"

you swallow a couple gulps of water before pulling the bottle away and reaching up to wipe your mouth with the back of your hand, "god, i love water-"

"yeah, i bet." jungkook chuckles, visibly more relieved now that he knows you won't be passing out from exhaustion anytime soon

as you put your water bottle away, your eyes lower towards jungkook's backpack slouching against the leg of his chair and almost immediately the anxiety that you thought you'd just swallowed down bubbles right back up

"so, are you going to tell me why you're acting like the cops are after you?" jungkook jokes, taking his seat before pulling his headphones off and setting them down next to his laptop

"i just, um-" you press your lips together as you slowly start to lean down, stretching your arm out towards the pocket, "i just wanted to see you, buddy!"

"i don't believe that for a second." jungkook snorts, turning to look at you

you shoot straight back up and pull your arm up and behind your head as if you're in the middle of a good stretch, "hey, what's with that tone? it's not a crime for me to want to see you-"

"you saw me at lunch! and that was only like an hour and a half ago-" jungkook turns his head to look back at his screen and you quickly revert back to your mission impossible secret agent mode

the forced smile drops from your face and you lean back down, your fingers blindly feeling for the cool metal of the zipper

"you know, you actually came at just the right time-" jungkook speaks up again and you pause just in case you need to pull away from his bag, but he makes no move to turn and look at you, "ji-eun was about to leave for her class but now you can meet her before she goes off!"

"uh-huh..." your tongue pokes out in concentration as you unzip the pocket in one swift movement, immediately sticking your hand in and feeling around for the balled-up piece of paper, "sounds gre-"

hold on, what did he just say?

you shoot back up

"did you just-" you choke and reach up to pat your chest gently, "i'm sorry, did you just say that ji-eun was here?"

"uh-huh!" jungkook nods, "i didn't know she had a spare at the same time as i did so i was surprised when she came over to say hi- it turns out our schedules are, like, sort of similar which oddly makes me kind of happy-"

it's at that moment that you notice the cherry-patterned tote bag slumped in the chair sitting across from you and you let out a nervous chuckle as you shift in your seat, "great! great, that's so- great, it's great that i'm meeting ji-eun today, out of all days..." you trail off, glancing around warily as you try to come up with some kind of an exit strategy

you're just really not in the mood to meet the love of jungkook's life today

you've already been hit with so many blows and it's only two in the afternoon-

"sorry that took so long! i couldn't find a bin but i bumped into my friends and they said they'd throw it out for me-"

oh, you have got to be kidding me.

your eyes widen in mild panic upon immediately recognizing ji-eun to be the girl who had overheard your entire monologue in the bathroom earlier today — and from the way her eyes flicker, it seems as though she remembers exactly who you are as well

"oh, no worries!" jungkook beams at ji-eun before pointing to you with his thumb, "this is my friend, by the way. the one i was talking about earlier! y/n, this is ji-eun."

you stay quiet as you continue staring up at ji-eun, your mind racing a mile a minute as you consider your current options

you can pretend like you've never met her before or you can make things awkward by telling jungkook that you met her today after she'd emptied her bladder

"...y/n?" jungkook lowers his voice, nudging you with his elbow before letting out a nervous chuckle, "please say something."

"i- yes, hello!" you blurt out, the feet of your chair scraping against the rough carpet as you get up from your seat to stick your hand out towards ji-eun, "it's- ah- it's- it's so nice to meet you! i'm y/n."

ji-eun stays quiet for a second before her lips turn up in a polite smile and she reaches towards you, gently taking your outstretched hand in hers (for the record, her hands are shockingly soft and supple), "it's lovely to meet you... as well, y/n. i love your glasses!"

you can't help but notice the immediate warmth that seems to surround ji-eun and suddenly it makes a lot more sense as to why jungkook's attracted to her

you're about as comforting as stepping into a puddle of water while wearing socks

you feel a slight sense of relief seeing that ji-eun is playing along but your new concern is whether or not she's connected the dots that your monologue in the bathroom was dedicated to jungkook

you didn't actually say his name when you were talking out loud, so you might be able to get away with this...

"oh, these old things?" you reach up to feel the glasses sitting on top of your head before flicking your hand at her, "i bought them on amazon. they're blue-light glasses- i can totally send you the link if you want."

"that would actually be great!" she gasps, nodding enthusiastically, "i desperately need a pair of blue-light glasses- seriously, i stared at my laptop screen for, like, ten hours straight today and i really feel like they're about to roll out of my head-"

"oh my god, don't even get me started. at this point it'd probably feel better to rip them right out of their sockets-"

"ji-eun, you ready?"

"let's gooo, i wanna get an iced coffee before we head off to class."

you and ji-eun don't get a chance to continue bonding over the pain of sore eyes when you're suddenly interrupted by two new voices

you look up to see two guys approaching the table and you subtly push your seat back a bit as you prepare yourself to say hello again

"oh! yeah, i'm ready, sorry-" ji-eun gestures towards you with a smile, "this is- this is jungkook's friend, by the way. y/n, these are my friends."

"hi, hello-" you get up from your seat again to stick your hand out, offering the two (very handsome, might you add) strangers a friendly smile, "i'm y/n, jungkook's friend- but you- you already knew that because that's what ji-eun just said-"

"i'm taehyung! you can call me tae-" the corners of taehyung's mouth immediately raise in a bright grin and he gives your hand a firm shake before nodding next to him, "and this is jimin!"

"hi..." you trail off, turning to give jimin a handshake as well, "so nice to meet you!"

"oh, i just- i actually just washed my hands, so-" jimin chuckles, looking down at your hand before taking a small step back, "but it's nice to meet you... jungkook's friend."

ooh

is it just you or did it suddenly get a little icy in here?

"oh, no problem! um, yeah, you too." you pull your hand back before swallowing nervously and forcing the polite smile back on your face, "i like your jacket, by the way! it looks really cool."

maybe it's because he's wearing giant sunglasses indoors but you can't help but feel slightly intimidated by jimin

you can't see his eyes but you can certainly feel them on you and you're definitely getting the vibe that jimin is already not the biggest fan of you for some weird reason

"thank you." he responds curtly, smoothing a hand over the leather before looking down at ji-eun, "so can we go now?"

"mhm!" ji-eun gets up from her chair before pushing it back into place, pulling her tote back up onto her shoulder before flashing a sweet smile at jungkook, "see you later, alligator."

"in a while, crocodile!" jungkook responds enthusiastically, watching with twinkly eyes as she turns and heads off towards the exit with jimin and taehyung glued at either side of her

god

she even walks prettily

and you were literally clomping down the boulevard like a feral caveman a second ago

you wait until they've disappeared to turn and face jungkook with a raised eyebrow, "...jimin was kind of a bitch."

"hey, play nice!" jungkook frowns, reaching over to give your arm a gentle whack, "he's a fashion major! ji-eun says being snooty is part of the degree requirements-" he grins, shaking his head slightly before leaning back against his chair, "she's, like, super funny."

"mm." you hum, still feeling a little uneasy about your interaction with jimin

you just hate it when first meetings don't go well and that first meeting definitely wasn't super great

but it wasn't like you did anything wrong, right?

you were great!

snooty jimin was the one who was being rude

whatever

hopefully you won't have to hang out with him too often if jungkook and ji-eun become an item

maybe you can just stick with taehyung!

he seems to be a lot friendlier

"oh, by the way, i-" you're suddenly reminded of your main mission and you turn to point down at jungkook's bag, "it's not a big deal, but i- i accidentally shoved something in your bag earlier and- could i just get it back from you?"

"you did?" jungkook frowns, leaning down to pick his bag up before unzipping it all the way and pulling both flaps open, "what was it?"

"it was- uh- just some notes on a scrap piece of paper!" you immediately feel the weight lift from your shoulders at jungkook's cluelessness to the situation, "i put it in the right side pocket-"

"wait, are you talking about, like, a balled up thing of paper?" jungkook pauses before looking up at you with wide eyes, "oh, shit- was it important??"

"um, i wouldn't call it important-" you snort, shaking your head, "is it not there? i swore it was in the right side pocket-"

"no, no, it was there! it was there, i just- ji-eun needed to spit her gum out and i thought it was one of my scrap pieces of paper-" jungkook winces, grabbing his phone and unlocking it with fumbling fingers, "i'm so sorry, y/n- let me text ji-eun and ask her which garbage can she threw it into and i can go dig it out-"

"no, no, it's okay!" you nearly let out a screech of delight knowing that your note now has a slobbery wad of gum in it and is living at the bottom of a trash can, "it's fine, i just- they were just boring notes for something. i just wanted to see if i had really shoved it into your bag or not."

"oh, okay-" jungkook's shoulders immediately slump and he sets his phone down on the table, "you're sure it wasn't important?"

"100%." you hold both hands out with a chuckle, "i needed to throw it out anyway so i guess ji-eun actually did me a favour-"

"okay, phew." jungkook sighs, zipping his bag back up and plopping it back down on the ground next to his feet, "anyways- i'm actually glad you're here because now you can help me plan out my date! i was working on it but then ji-eun came and obviously i couldn't have that google doc open in front of her-" he turns his laptop to show you all of his hard work with a grin, "check it out! i have a list of things i need to buy, i have outfit ideas, i even went on pinterest for inspiration-"

"wow, kook-" your eyes bulge out for a second at the sight of the extensive and shockingly organized google doc before you reach over to pull his laptop closer towards you, "i... i really don't think i've ever seen you... even make a google doc before-"

he even has the sunset time written down for the date

why would he need to know what time the sun is setting??

"i have everything planned for next week." jungkook pulls his laptop back to him as you settle back against your seat, "i already emailed my landlord to ask if i would even be allowed to hang out on the rooftop and he said it would be fine! he also reminded me to keep a brick wedged between the door so that i don't lock us up on the rooftop-"

"so you're definitely going with the rooftop picnic, then?"

"oh, i'm actually changing it to a rooftop dinner instead of a picnic." jungkook shakes his head before giving you a half-hearted shrug, "i think a picnic is cute but i really wanna try to impress her, y'know? i ordered this thing on amazon just now- basically, it's a medium-sized inflatable bubble tent! the description says it's perfect for two people and- i'm gonna, like-" he pauses and looks away from his screen towards you with a smile, "well, you know, i'm gonna do what you said and i'm gonna stuff it full of blankets and pillows and... hopefully i can string up fairy lights and stuff on the inside... so that after the date we can go in there and just talk and not have to worry about getting attacked by mosquitos!"

"wow, that's-" you cross your arms over your chest before leaning back and looking up towards the ceiling, "huh. that's actually a cute idea, kook. i wouldn't have been able to come up with something like that. i didn't even know transparent tents existed."

"i know." jungkook gives you a smug little smile before bursting into a grin, "but yeah, that's it! all we have to do is go and pick up all the supplies and stuff."

"we?" you frown, looking back down at jungkook, "i... wasn't aware i was part of this plan..."

"what? of course you are!" jungkook snorts, looking at you as if a third eye just sprouted from your forehead, "obviously you have to help me-"

"well, i just don't know if that's-" you chuckle uneasily as you rub the back of your neck, "i really- i don't wanna get in your way, you know? maybe you should- maybe you should just take care of all of this yourself! i mean, you basically planned everything already-"

"what? but- but you're my-" jungkook deflates and you instantly feel bad upon seeing his eyes suddenly turn sad, "okay..."

you press your lips together and wait for him to say something else but the next few seconds are filled with nothing but awkward silence and the faint buzzing of the fluorescent lights hanging above you

you'd jump off a cliff if jungkook asked you to but helping him prepare and set up his date is something that you,.., definitely would not enjoy.,.,

but then again, this isn't about you, is it?

this is about jungkook, your friend, and he needs your help to set up this very important date that-

oh, damnit.

"i'm-" you clear your throat as you sit up in your seat, reaching over to give jungkook's hand a pat, "no, of course i'll help, kook. i just thought that- well, this date seems so important to you that i thought you wanted to take care of all the details yourself!"

the bright smile immediately returns to jungkook's face and you resist the urge to call him out on so blatantly guilt-tripping you like that-

"yes! you're the best!"

"i know."

»»————- 🖤 ————-««

although you and jungkook are practically inseparable on campus (and some would say it might be healthy for the two of you to give each other a little bit of space) — you don't think you'll ever say no to hanging out with him downtown

of course, hanging out with jungkook downtown would be a lot more fun if it weren't for the fact that the two of you have basically spent the entire day shopping for all the things he needs for his date

and if it weren't for the fact that he paid for lunch and treated you to a cake pop and a venti-sized iced coffee, you would probably be livid about having to carry everything for him because you really feel like your arms are about to pop right off in about two seconds

fancy cutlery, porcelain plates, fluffy throw pillows, a giant blanket, fairy lights... at this point he might as well buy an entire house for ji-eun

and look, you know you probably sound bitter and that-should-be-me about this whole situation, but that couldn't be farther from the truth!

it's just that listening to someone you like gushing about the person that they like for an entire day while you're carrying bags full of things for their date can get a little mentally and physically exhausting so if you're grouchy right now it's really not your fault

"i think we might have to call an uber back to your place, jungkook-" you mutter, adjusting the hefty tote bag over your shoulder with a grunt as you trail behind him on the sidewalk, "bringing all of this on the bus is going to piss people off-"

you stumble over your feet a little when the bag in your right hand knocks into a garbage can and you curse to yourself while resisting the urge to kick the damn thing over

"okay, grumpy, we'll call an uber home-" jungkook spins around with a smile before raising the notepad in his hand and tapping against it with his pen, "i just have one more thing i have to take care of and then we can go!"

"okay, well-" you set the bags down onto the ground with a fwump! before rubbing your sore palms together, "what else do you have to get?"

jungkook offered to help carry a couple of things but you insisted that you'd take it all and that he should just focus on ticking off all of the items on his list

you wince at the sight of the pinkish-red imprints now embedded into your palms from the straps of the bags

obviously you've now come to regret your generous offer

"flowers!" jungkook chirps, using his pen to point to the flower shop a couple of shops down, "i have to greet ji-eun with a bouquet of flowers as pretty as she is-"

"yeah, i understand-" you adjust the two bags on both shoulders before bending down to pick up the other two on the ground, "also, i'm not a genius or anything but i'm pretty sure the flowers aren't going to survive until the date if you buy them now-"

"duh, obviously not- i'm going to place an order now and then pick them up on the day of the date!" jungkook tsks, waiting for you to join his side before he begins walking towards the flower shop, "thanks for doing all of this for me, by the way. you really are the best." he hums, hurrying over to open the door for you

"i... yeah, of course, kook." you feel yourself soften slightly as soon as you see the sweet little smile on his face and you quickly scold yourself in your head for being so curt with him all day, "that's what friends are for, right?"

"mhm!" jungkook slaps his hands down on your shoulders from behind before giving them a squeeze, "and i am so letting you choose whatever you want for dinner tonight-"

"hello!"

"oh, jesus-" you and jungkook are immediately greeted by an overenthusiastic employee as soon as you step into the shop and you honestly probably would've knocked him out with one of your shopping bags if they weren't so heavy-

"are you two looking for anything in particular?" he smiles kindly before gesturing towards the large selection of flowers all around you, "we have flowers of all kinds! roses, tulips, lilies- i can even show you flowers from our new tropical selection-"

"actually-" jungkook nudges you aside before glancing down at the employee's nametag, "seokjin, i'd like to place an order for a custom bouquet, if that's okay."

"ah, a custom bouquet!" seokjin claps his hands and rubs them together enticingly, "what are you celebrating? i need to know so that i can help pick out the perfect flowers for your bouquet."

"well, i don't know if it's a celebration-" jungkook chuckles, his cheeks pinking slightly as he reaches up to rub the back of his neck, "it's for a first date."

"a first date!!" seokjin gasps excitedly before turning his head to look at you, "you must be so-"

"-oh, not for me!" you let out a laugh before shaking your head quickly, "it's- it's definitely not for me. i'm just here to provide moral support and-" you lift one of the bags to show him, "muscular support."

"ah, i see... okay, well- why don't i take you around and introduce you to the different candidates you could consider for your bouquet?" seokjin turns back to look at jungkook, "each flower you choose will be very important in showing your future lover how much you care about them-" he pauses when he notices you hovering behind jungkook and he leans over a little with a bright smile, "why don't you go and wait by the front counter, darling? you can put everything down there and take a little break. there's some cucumber water and fresh puff pastry apple roses up at the front if you're interested!"

"well, i can't say no to free food." you snort, nodding before turning to head towards the front counter, "i'll just wait for you over there, then..."

you nearly let out a moan of relief as soon as you set all the bags down and you twist your upper body to the right and to the left until you feel the a satisfying pop! of your spine cracking back in place

your body was not made to carry heavy things

in fact, you'd like to argue that your body was made to lie down and do nothing

you take a seat on the wooden stool before turning to look at the apple roses sitting prettily in the display case and you almost feel like you shouldn't touch them even though seokjin offered them to you

even the pitcher of cucumber water looks too nice to touch

this place is awfully fancy

you didn't even know flower shops could be this fancy

you prop both elbows up on the counter before leaning back comfortably, your eyes lazily scanning around the store

"$15 for a single rose?" you gawk at the little wooden sign poking out from a large bouquet of neatly wrapped long-stem roses before making a face, "god."

you can't even imagine how much a custom bouquet is going to cost if a single rose is fifteen bucks

"-also write a note for you and attach it to the bouquet, if you're interested in that. it'll be an additional five dollars, but we handwrite it on the highest quality card stock with the most beautiful calligraphy and we even spray it with perfume-"

you perk up when you hear seokjin's voice and you look to see him and jungkook coming over to you

you have to admit that seokjin is great at his job because he's doing a good job at milking every dollar out of jungkook-

"yeah, that would be great!" jungkook nods enthusiastically, pulling his backpack off before unzipping it to grab his wallet, "i think a small note might be cute-"

"oh, that reminds me!" seokjin stops in his tracks right as he's about to lift the wooden slab to get behind the counter, "would you be interested in purchasing a teddy bear as well? if you add a teddy bear to your order, i'll give you a slight discount on the flowers."

"ooh, a discount!" jungkook gasps and you turn your head slightly so seokjin won't see you rolling your eyes at how much he's forcing jungkook to buy

you respect the hustle but this is too much

"where are the teddy bears?"

"right by the flowers!" seokjin smiles, wrapping an arm around jungkook's shoulders and spinning him around, "we can round back and take a look-"

"okay, i think i have to cut in here-" you chuckle, reaching out and grabbing the back of jungkook's elbow, "you don't- you don't think a bouquet of flowers and a teddy bear is a little too much for a first date?" you clear your throat quietly before offering a shrug, "i feel like that's just... a lot, kook. i mean, i would be overwhelmed if-"

"well, i guess it's a good thing i'm not taking you out on a date then, right?" jungkook teases, wiggling his arm out of your grip before turning back to look at seokjin, "onward to the bears, my good man!"

ouch

"yeah." you can't help but frown as jungkook and seokjin head back towards the flowers, "thanks for the reminder."

"that's gotta hurt."

"god-" you jump at the sudden appearance of an employee standing behind the counter and you place a hand over your chest before letting out a breath, "you scared me!"

"sorry." he shrugs, "we polished the floors this morning so my shoes are making, like, no noise."

"oh."

a moment of silence passes while you turn to face away from him again, but all of a sudden-

"so he really can't tell that you like him, huh?"

"you-" you immediately straighten up and your head spins around so fast that you're surprised you didn't complete decapitate yourself, "excuse me??"

"what? it's obvious." the employee snorts, spraying cleaner onto the counter before reaching up to yank the tattered rag off his shoulder, "it's painfully obvious, actually-"

you can feel your entire face starting to go red as this complete stranger continues to rip you a new one and you hold a hand out to shut him up, "no offense, but i-i don't think this is any of your business, sir-"

"it's yoongi." yoongi looks down at his apron for a second before frowning, "huh. i forgot to put my dumb name tag on again-"

"well, yoongi-" you place emphasis on his name in an effort to intimidate him and make him go away, "you don't know what you're talking about and i suggest you mind your own business-"

"you should tell him before it's too late." yoongi doesn't seem to be all that affected by your biting tone and you roll your eyes at the way he rounds back to the topic

"what are you even talking about?"

"well, i assume you're going to be his best man at his wedding. from the way it's looking, you're certainly not going to be the bride," yoongi purses his lips as he folds up the rag into a neat little square, "you don't wanna wait until you're fixing his tie at the wedding to tell him that you love him."

"what makes you think i lo-" you cut yourself off quickly before that word slips out of your mouth, "like him?"

"if you didn't, you wouldn't be here right now." yoongi points out with a tilt of his head, "and from how smudgy your eyeliner is, it looks like you've been working hard all day."

your jaw drops slightly and you can't help but scoff

the nerve of this guy!

"who do you think you are?!"

"i'm yoongi." yoongi raises a brow, "i told you that like a second ago- wow, you are not a good listener-"

"do you usually do this with all of the customers who come here?" you interrupt, crossing your arms defensively before leaning in slightly, "you're awfully nosy-"

"i only do this with the ones that seem to have something juicy going on." yoongi hums, leaning down to put the spray bottle of cleaner under the counter, "this is a flower shop. the most exciting part of my day is watching a bumblebee choose which flower to land on."

"well, nothing juicy is going on here so-" you twist back around before sticking your nose up in the air slightly, "sorry to disappoint."

"alright, fair enough." yoongi nods to himself, letting out a sigh as he slowly backs away from the counter, "i guess i'll just leave you to... wallow in self-pity... and continue staring at your friend with cartoon hearts floating around your head-"

"'you should tell him before it's too late-'" you swivel around and slap both your palms down on the counter, "why would you- why would even say something like that?! i can't tell him. are you insane?!"

a smirk twitches at the corner of yoongi's mouth at your sudden confession and he lets out a sigh before stepping back up towards you, "and why can't you tell him?"

"because- i just can't! he's-" you clear your throat before leaning in and lowering your voice, "he's literally taking someone else out on a date- we're here to buy flowers for his date-"

"so what?" yoongi interrupts, "it's just a date. it's not like you're stopping his wedding."

"so what? because he doesn't like me back, so what's the point?" you hiss, resisting the urge to reach over and smack some common sense into this very nosy and very stubborn stranger, "this isn't a romantic comedy- and even if it was, i'm very obviously not the main character-"

"you don't know that he doesn't like you back."

...

well now he's just toying with you

"i... i can't tell if you're kidding or not-"

"do i look like i'm kidding?" yoongi asks, pointing to his poker face before shaking his head, "you don't know that he doesn't like you back. you've obviously never asked him."

"oh, please." you scoff, turning around to lean back against the counter again, "trust me, i know it."

"well, did he ever explicitly say that he didn't like you?" yoongi leans over to peek at jungkook over your shoulder, "do you have a definitive answer to this particular question?"

"no, but he doesn't have to... we're just friends." you frown, your eyes wandering over to the back of jungkook's head, "he doesn't like me. i know he doesn't. we're just friends."

we're just friends.

(saying it out loud is a lot more depressing than you thought it'd be.)

"well, maybe the reason why you're just friends is because the two of you won't allow yourselves to be more than that," yoongi suggests, your head tilting to the side slightly as you force yourself to consider his surprisingly wise words, "it's obvious that you have a solid friendship so it would suck if a relationship ruined that- so maybe he does like you and is only asking someone else out to try to force himself not to like you..."

you feel your heart skip a beat when jungkook turns to glance at you over his shoulder with a soft smile while seokjin continues rattling off about the vast choice of teddy bears available for purchase

you bite back a giggle when he mouths a desperate 'help' at you before raising his hand and twirling his finger next to his head to tell you that seokjin is fully crazy

"...so i guess what i'm trying to say is that you're never really going to know how he feels about you if you don't ask him," you tune back in to the end of yoongi's little speech and you turn your head slightly to glance back at him, "but what do i know, right? i just polish counters at high-end flower shops."
