November art dump 2022!
idk If I asked u this question b4 but uhmmmmmmmmm how do u come up with designs 😞😞😞
i wish i had a good answer but idk. i need to visualize the base design head first and then from there i sometimes suck in my love of fashion and other character archetypes, or draw inspo from other similar characters in media. i ask myself what body type so i see them having? or fashion? if its an object, can i incorporate any shapes they have into the design? just stuff like that 🙏 i know its not helpful but its my process
if you want a recent example: take my candle design! i was stuck cus i knew what i wanted her to look like but i didn’t know how to go about it. obviously she needed an outfit that was based off the earthy aesthetic, and i wanted her to have a lot of piercings and jewelry. i decided to also give her tattoos. for inspiration, i actually took some from treehugger from MLP and venus mcflytrap from monster high generation 3.
i’m the worst at explaining things but i hope at least i could give a bit of insight 😭

Has anyone ever heard of “Battle for Dream Island” (1990) before? Really obscure NES game, doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page (or hell, even a mention in one).
From what little I can find about it on the internet, Battle for Dream Island was an NES game released on January 1st, 1990, apparently made entirely by a pair of independent American developers. Never made all that many sales, but eventually it garnered a rather niche following on an obscure gaming forum, though it had long since dissipated. Unfortunately, seemingly nothing from the forum threads was archived, so all I have to go on are a few vague threads titles from a navigation page.
I, rather cliched like, bought this BfDI cartridge from a sleazy old guy at a flea market (along with Puzznic and Wario’s Woods for a bargain deal). I dumped the ROM and booted it up on an emulator to take some screencaps.
Upon pressing start, you are prompted to “Choose Contestant,” and have a choice between any of 20 playable characters (who are all everyday objects, for some reason). Each contestant has their own stats, and while you can feel the difference while playing, the overall impact of character choice is pretty negligible. (Also some of these guys don’t even have arms?? Weird design choice but okay.)
Two screencaps of the character select screen. I went with Pin for my first playthrough cause idk she seemed kinda cute. I’m almost sure the stats are “Strength,” “Speed,” “Jump,” and “Skill.”
(Continued under cut)
While touting itself as a game show, BfDI is essentially a glorified minigame collection. The gameplay loop is as follows: You and the 19 other contestants play a minigame (referred to as “challenges”) to earn points based on how well you do (though I’m fairly certain the computer contestants just get a random amount of points for each challenge). Most of the challenges are various platforming segments, though some others fall more into puzzle game territory.
Two of the challenges. The green “Win Tokens” can be collected for bonus points. LEFT: A horizontal platformer level. The grey wall in the middle of the screencap moves up and down. RIGHT: A challenge about climbing ladders while avoiding “acid spitballs.” The game pauses to scroll vertically a la Super Mario Bros. 2.
After each challenge, this speaker thing shows up (pretty sure he’s supposed to be like a game show host?) and tallies up everyone’s score. The contestant with the least score gets “eliminated” and removed from the game.
The results screen. Leafy did rather poor on the last challenge, so she’s out of the game.
The game continues like this until you lose (have the least amount of points) and get booted to the game over screen, or until you are the last one left, in which case you win Dream Island! (Though of course in reality you just get booted back to the title screen. No Dream Island for you.)
The victory screen, with the gates to Dream Island in sight. Feels more like the gates to hell given how Pin’s staring at me.
It’s a fairly easy game for NES standards (I won on my first try). Took me about 80 minutes on my first playthrough, though subsequent ones could take less than an hour as I knew what I was doing. The brevity and the fact it saves your high score gives BfDI a nice sense of replayability (though this is probably best done sporadically, as the challenges tend to get a bit samey after a couple of back-to-back playthroughs).
So yeah, just wanted to share this in case anybody else has heard of it. I’ll probably rip the sprites and upload them sometime later cause it doesn’t look like anybody’s done that yet.

Headcanon Voice Actor(s): Sarah Stiles
Candlequin is a clown made out of wax who is a Magic villain in Skylanders: Trap Team and a Doom Raider.
Personality
Being a clown, Candlequin is very comical and goofy, and she enjoys being in the spotlight. She enjoys herself whenever she is performing, always aiming to bring down the house. She likes to do things her own way. Candlequin is also a bit of a neat freak, arranging her candles in specific rows, but she doesn't like cleaning up messes.
Abilities
Candlequin is able to light up the wicks on her fingers and magically shoot fire sparks from them. She can summon large explosive candles from the ground. She also can twirl the floating hoop around her waist, which allows her to throw sparks from all angles. She is shown to be fairly athletic, as she is capable of jumping very high and doing flips and cartwheels.
History
When she first came alive as a performer made of wax, she was given the name Kendall Quinn. Upbeat and candle-obsessed, Kendall traveled in the circus with the other creations of her inventive ringmaster, performing for audiences across Skylands. But then, when the ringmaster started leading the circus in disturbing ways she wasn't happy with, Kendall grew rebellious. She ran away from his circus to start one of her own- the Chandelier Circus- and called herself the Candlequin. She loved being the one in charge to the point where she wanted to show everybody how powerful she was. She and her villainous circus troupe forced people to watch their evil performances, also casting bright spells on their belongings that would make them melt. Her show of force and magical prowess led her to enter the ranks of the Doom Raiders, pushing Pain-Yatta out of the spotlight in the process. She strongly preferred being part of the Raiders than being back in her old circus, as she felt like she had a stronger sense of individuality and brightness. Eventually, like the rest of her fellow Raiders, Candlequin was locked in Cloudcracker Prison.
Skylanders: Trap Team
After the Doom Raiders were freed, Candlequin, like the others, really didn't feel like following Kaos's plan for world domination. She was curious to know how old he was. Later in the story, after noticing that the group was losing assets with more of them being captured, Candlequin decided she'd stop the Skylanders herself. She reopened her circus with improvements using the leftover Traptanium, swiping people up and keeping them within its walls. The Skylanders arrived at the circus, where they battled its attractions on the outside of the tent and then confronted her on the inside. The fight that followed resulted in Candlequin being defeated and captured.

Villain Theme ♫
This is what I imagine the music for her boss battle sounding like:
And I imagine her villain theme, the music that plays when you play as her, sounding something like this:
Trivia
- Her name is a portmanteau of "candle" and "harlequin."
- She was going to be a marionette/clown/candle hybrid named Marion Candles, but the marionette side of her was removed because her creator thought she'd be too similar to Mesmeralda.
- Candlequin's creator imagines her being a Sensei for the sorcerer battle class, wielding a large candlestick staff.
here are all of my new bfdi gjinkas, fully done! well, not "fully" fully. these are just colored sketches... i just wanted to get my ideas down, so you folks can see them, and so i can use them in later art! yay!
