Okay so I’m not really an active part of the Obey Me! fandom on this blog, but that doesn’t change the fact that 110% percent of my thoughts are about Beel. And I’m pleading any other simps out there to give me their two pennies on a matter if they are willing, because I’m very very curious about if the fandom thinks what he’s feeling is actually hunger.
He constantly refers to the feeling that is always haunting him as 「減る」, (romanized heru,) meaning to “decrease,” “diminish” or “abate”. How he always complains is 「 腹が減った。」 (romanized hara ga hetta,) a phrase with more masculine connotations insinuating hunger: he’s troubled because “his stomach is empty.” All in all, “I’m hungry,” seems to be a perfectly solid translation.
The thing is though, if you look beyond how to translate a line and focus on his character development, he is not explicitly referring to hunger. And yes, he most definitely uses food to cope with the feeling and it seems to help him; but my man’s even eaten a pillar in Diavolo’s castle.
He is not “gluttonous,” which is the sin associated with his namesake. Beel is not greedy to eat after he is full, or particular about what he eats to a degree that it is sinful. He even rarely shares his meals. What he seeks is just to quell a void and is content if he manages to do so. He’ is also not haunted by the feeling when he’s doing things that he loves; such as surfing, working out, or spending time with MC.
To top this up, he is the only brother that we know of that is more occupied by something other than his sin. Half of his mind is constantly occupied with thoughts of his family, and 40% is set on food. His connection to his family is of more concern to him than his hunger.
But you can make the two meet. I suspect what is wrong with his stomach is emptiness in his core, due to the guilt he felts in ‘choosing’ Belphie and ‘abandoning’ Lilith. His song even goes on about “questions growing in his mind,” and about “illusions”. He constantly questions whether he made the right choice in saving Belphie, and the illusion part could be that his father morphed his horrible guilt to a feeling of void.
He lost a sister and the unity of his family and has to live with questioning himself after having made his choice. His stomach is always dropping. He just wants to replace it with fullness to mask it for a while, whether it’s tiring his body, seeking MC’s affection, or eating.
I really love my boy so much. ;.; If there are Japanese speakers out there, or someone who wants to muse about Beel, please do feel free to chatter with me. TTATT
