what happened to Carmen? Why did she die? What was her illness? How did Dahlia react? Did their parents know about them dating?? Is there a song that reminds you of them?

So carmen has been sick since she was young. Not the type of sickness that she needs to spend her life in the hospital, but does need extra care. Over the course of the story she coughs a bit and trips to show her body starting to weaken. She passed because it just kinda caught up to her. She spent a week in the hospital before dying.

Dahlia was heartbroken. She knew Carmen was sick since they started dating. She was also the only one carmen was honest about her fears with at first. Carmen never cried with Ángel or her parents for a while cause she wanted to be brave for them. She only ever cried with Dahlia. When she died Dahlia was inconsolable. She did, however, try to stay strong for Ángel. They hugged and cried together a lot. Carmen told Dahlia she wanted her to move on after her passing and be happy with a different person, but Dahlia only smiled and responded "as long as my heart is beating it's yours." This is in reference to a song (it's a musical) that carmen sang to Dahlia where that line is part of the chorus

The parents did know. To preface: Ángel sr. is catholic and Alma was catholic at one point but now is not. Carmen came out to her mother first. Alma is a pretty old fashioned woman. She wished Carmen would date a man and said so point blank. She said some pretty hurtful things (she didn't mean to hurt carmen but still she thinks younger generations are just sensitive.) It wasn't until Alma had a heart to heart with Dahlia, that she started to grow on her (I just finished writing the heart to heart in case anyone wants more details on that) Carmen was kinda scared to tell her dad after what happened with her mom (especially since Ángel sr is religious) she tearfully went to her father and her dad was like ???? cause he has no idea how to connect with his kids. She said "I like girls." and her dad just smiled and said "I know, baby." She started like fully crying and after that they had an introspective deep conversation about religion. Carmen is also religious, but never felt guilt in the gay regard. "How could something so natural be wrong?" Her dad is pretty much on the same page. (if y'all want the details on that convo lmk hehehe)

Dahlia and Ángel jr are not religious. There was a stick cross near the outside their home and they when she passed both coped differently. Dahlia, for the first time since she was young, said a prayer by the cross. Ángel spits on it and said "Fuck you, man." I like this scene cause at the end of the day, they both think they're talking to nothing, but the symbol of the cross changes to them after Carmen's death

man i dont want to get all "fandom elder" on people because i think its cringe when people talk about the "good old days" of shipping culture and then ignore the rampant misogyny, queerphobia and racism in those communities but i gotta say: why are people so weird about shipping now?

Like there's really bizarre things i keep seeing younger/newer people in fandoms get upset over. like the obsession with only shipping canon couples. getting upset over crackships. viewing two characters as siblings (who arent considered siblings in the narrative) and getting mad when people ship them. If you get a relationship slightly off people will right a massive thesis statement about it flat out harass you over it. people have to put "not a ship" under platonic art because shippers will blow a fuse if they read it as slightly romantic. pick me queer people getting pissed off when people ship two characters of the same gender and accusing them of "not appreciating platonic relationships" (which by the way, funny to me that this is only thrown at m/m ships and never f/f ships).

Like shipping culture is supposed to be fun, what are we doing here.
