star trek ds9 garashir sometimes I think there was a lot more behind this exchange there’s deeper hurt there I think it’s easy to imagine it’s about julian asking for more and garak saying no because he doesn’t think they’d make it and for that to be based on past cycles of behavior (and later: “I like to think so… we live in uncertain times.”) I’ve seen the opinion that Garak won’t deny himself anything he wants floating about and I’m not sure that’s exactly right he will let himself have the things he’s sure he can acquire and keep; do the things he’s sure he can get away with in the moment I don’t think he thinks Julian is one of those things (Julian disagrees) anyway. it’s the blink that does it for me. garak’s face changes - he’s open and present then and not performing as much it’s a message for Julian.
