Hello, Im so sorry if you've already been asked this before, but should I read the ORV webnovel or will reading the webtoon be sufficient enough to understand the story?

No problem! It’s an important question and deserves it’s own post 💕

The short answer is yes, absolutely read the webnovel! ORV is the type of metafiction that does backflips off your expectations for it until the bitter end. Every medium for storytelling has some unique aspects about it, ORV was written with a novel format specifically in mind.

I think the most important reason, though, is that Kim Dokja is a supremely unreliable narrator whose omitted information or reinterpretations of things make up a large part of ORV’s thematic ground, and the webtoon struggles with showing that. Mr. Dokja Kim is a bit too “cool” and infallible seeming, and its harder to wrap your head around the fact that he’s untrustworthy and his perception of events is rarely what’s actually happening

Here’s something I drew recently as an example. The manhwa has to follow KDJ’s POV so the scene is hard set as comedic, whereas in the novel, it’s easy to reframe the scene in your head once you know and see KDJ is being mean to yjh 😔

Since people canonically cannot see Dokja's face, it would be interesting how that would manifest as their minds tried to fill in the blanks. Ever-shifting, morphing between various never-quite-clear faces of the average Korean man. Somewhat hard and eye-straining to look at if you look at him too long.

ok my vision for a kim dokja/yoo joonghyuk/lee seolwha threesome is this. so kim dokja keeps trying to convince yoo joonghyuk to get back together with lee seolwha because thats his otp and he wants to see it play out in front of him. he does this through extolling her virtues loudly and awkwardly and through classic miscommunication this results in yoo joonghyuk and lee seolwha both thinking kim dokja is actually just into her.

lee seolwha thinks this is kind of sweet, and well. she's kind of lonely in the apocalypse. yoo joonghyuk angsts endlessly about this because this crazy guy he's into is apparently into his ex wife and wow, his life is really a fucking trainwreck, but eventually settles on some manly repression and self-sacrifice bullshit where he's like 'i have no history with lee seolwha in this regression........and kim dokja deserves to be with the woman he loves......'. meanwhile kim dokja is not so subtly trying to bang these two dolls heads together and convince them to kiss. however, throughout these failed matchmaking attempts both kim dokja and yoo joonghyuk end up growing closer to lee seolwha.

eventually, somehow, this ends in a confrontation where lee seolwha makes a pass at kim dokja while yoo joonghyuk stares broodily into the distance totally not eavesdropping. kim dokja tries to say something along the lines of 'you should be with yoo joonghyuk!' but again this gets misinterpreted as him wanting yoo joonghyuk to also be included. when yoo joonghyuk responds to this with the biggest puppy dog eyes imaginable going (voice filled with restrained hope) i can come too? well.......theres no world where kim dokja could refuse him. and thats how they all start fucking.

maomao is my favorite "not like other girls" style protagonist bc for one shes a girls girl through and through. to the bone. and two she's just a weird little freak. absolute lunatic. they have the whole "omg she's actually beautiful and everyone falls for her when she's all made up" trope but the punchline is that she does not fucking want to look like that. she actively puts dirt on her face every day bc she does not want to be perceived as attractive (mostly out of fear of being used for sex work though at the same time she has the utmost respect for women who do sex work like she grew up in a brothel those are her sisters). she's Sherlock level smart and solves every mystery so fast but goes "well thats none of my business. anyway back to testing poisons on myself" she has the 2nd most powerful guy in the nation head over heels in love with her and is like "man this guy is weird around me what's his deal. I guess he's fine though because he gives me rare medicines and has no dick" fucking ICON i love her. also she once slapped someone so hard they fell on the floor. 10/10
