DuckTales Theory: The Rightful Heir of Scrooge McDuck

With the finale on the horizon, I've been thinking a lot about where they could potentially take the whole "rightful heir of Scrooge McDuck who is destined to find the Papyrus of Binding" thing. After rewatching the whole series thus far a few weeks ago, it's been on my mind a lot, and with all the news we've gotten about the finale recently, I've managed to piece something together that I think is pretty plausible. I want to warn you guys right away that this post will have spoilers for the finale promo that was released on Monday, so if you haven't seen it and don't plan on checking it out, please don't read any further! That being said, let's get into this.

For starters, let's look at what we know about the rightful heir to the Papyrus of Binding so far. FOWL is taking all of the missing mysteries and it's included, but they can't retrieve this one on their own. In The First Adventure!, Scrooge wrote that it shall go to "the rightful heir of McDuck" and "that those who attempt to harm any of them will be incapable to getting it." Therefore, nobody in FOWL would be able to retrieve the Papyrus because none of them are Scrooge's heirs and they've all tried to harm him and his family in some way. Another thing to note on the topic of this particular episode, despite being the finale of the show, The Last Adventure! is a clear parallel title to The First Adventure!, where the Papyrus was introduced, so it's likely to be found in the finale.

Now, let's look back to The Split Sword of Swanstantine! At the end of this episode, it's shown that Black Heron has gotten a feather from one of the McDucks for some mysterious reason. Many assumed this would be a cloning situation, where they need to get McDuck DNA in order to replicate a "rightful heir" who hasn't hurt Scrooge or his family in order to get the Papyrus back. However, a lot of the fandom seemed to think it was Scrooge's feather. I personally don't think that is the case. In the episode, we see Heron swipe at all of the children.

She very well could have picked up a feather from one of the kids instead. Of course, the triplets are the first to come to mind because they are essentially Scrooge's heirs, so it would make sense if she was after one of their feathers. But then, I started thinking and realized that none of them really take after Scrooge entirely. Huey primarily looks up to Fenton and Donald (if you're looking for someone inside the family) and leans toward being a superhero/scientist rather than adventurer. We know from the last episode that Dewey wants to be a pilot and has always primarily looked up to Della more than anyone else in the family. Louie you could make an argument for, but he only really admires Scrooge because of his money. He doesn't like adventuring and would rather focus on strategy.

So who could the rightful heir be? Well, there's really only one choice and it fits infinitely better than the rest. I'm very certain that Webby is going to be the rightful heir who is destined to find the Papyrus of Binding. There is a ton of evidence hidden throughout the show since season 1 of this, and I've collected all I could find. I'm sure I even missed some.

First of all, let's get into Webby's character. From her first appearance, she's shown to idolize Scrooge and everything about his family. She's invested in McDuck history and dreams of becoming an adventurer just like Scrooge. In fact, the episode of the series that introduces FOWL way back in season 1 is one that focuses heavily on Scrooge's bond with Webby. There's also the part in A Nightmare on Killmotor Hill! where it's revealed that her perfect dream is quite literally turning into Scrooge. She also believed him longer than the other family members in 87 Cent Solution! There's LOTS of stuff in the show about Webby looking up to him, too much for me to even include in one post.

Season 3 is focused on legacy. We've gotten focus or are getting focus on the legacies of each of the triplets: Huey being a superhero (we could get more of this tbh), Dewey being a pilot and whatever's going on with Louie in the next episode. What about Webby's legacy? Well, it's very clear to me that it lies with Clan McDuck. The last Webby-centric episode we got was The Fight for Castle McDuck!, one that heavily focused on why she's a part of the McDuck family and heavily revolved around getting a placement in it (the whole statue thing). This episode really felt like it was leading up to her ultimate legacy being to follow in Scrooge's footsteps and become a great adventurer. It was also very recent and not counting the Christmas episode which was likely out of production order, the last Webby episode before the finale. (Also, I think it's important to note that the first season 3 episode that heavily focuses on FOWL has a Scrooge and Webby B plot. Just food for thought.)

Another important thing that I just noticed is that in the season 2 finale Moonvasion!, at the end of the FOWL reveal, the camera SPECIFICALLY pans in on Webby hugging Scrooge. This is a deliberate decision, as Webby could have easily been shown with the triplets of Beakley in this scene. But they chose to put Scrooge and Webby front and center.

Another thing to point out is that FOWL's intentions with the feather is obviously cloning, as mentioned before and theorized by many. In the finale for the promo, we saw two new characters with an interesting resemblance to Webby. It's very likely that May and June are the results of them trying to clone Webby through her feather.

However, they don't look exactly like her. Their color schemes and hairstyles are different, and we know by the casting announcement that they have different voice actresses. Therefore, I don't think FOWL has mastered the art of cloning just yet. They need a perfect clone of Webby, and much like Bentley and Buford (who appear to be clones of Bradford, I'm gonna be real), they're like Webby but not exactly Webby. I wouldn't be surprised if they were sent to the lost library for being "rejects," where they're later found by the family, explain why they were created and open up the exposition for The Last Adventure.

How does FOWL know Webby is the rightful heir? I don't know. I don't think we'll be able to determine that until we know more. But I feel like they somehow do and plan on making the perfect clone of her to retrieve the Papyrus before the McDucks are able to. This is a bit of a stretch, but maybe Beakley knows about this too and is keeping it from Webby because it opens her up to danger. Who knows?

And one more thing before we wrap this post up: remember when Frank said something from Last Crash of the Sunchaser! would come up in season 3? That had to be about him stating Webby wasn't family. It could very well be brought up again in the context that Webby isn't only family but the rightful heir of Scrooge McDuck himself!

Anyway, that's about all I have. I'm sure there's more evidence, and if you have any, feel free to respond with it or send it to me via DMs or asks! This will definitely be on my mind until the finale airs LOL

Having thoughts about Nine. 

I dont think they're taking the show this way but im having Sonic and Nine feelings so headcanon rambling fic thing idk i just have A LOT OF FEELINGS OK!

Sonic loves tails. I know in the show they're 'best friends' but we all know they're brothers, ok? Ok good. 

We know that no matter the version, the dimension Sonic will do anything for Tails and with the way they're setting up Nines character arc of a loner who discovers friendship has got me thinking about how sonic is going to leave the dystopian universe and start his journey to the others. 

Because i can see a universe where he's reluctant to go

The portal rages before Sonic. Throwing blue, red and white light around them all as it fights the very fabric of reality. This will be his first step to fixing this whole paradox mess. To fix his mistake. 

Right at the edge of the portal he stops. Only to turn around and march right back to Nine 

"Come with me" he says holding out his hand, determination burning so strong in his voice it's nearly a real physical warmth. 

"I'll fix this whole paradox mess and you'll either get your memories back or I'll have two little buddys, it's win-win right?" 

Nines eyes well with surprise, glossing over before a subdued look of fondness takes over his face. 

 "That's not how this works Sonic"

"Why not?" It's a demand as he unconsciously draws closer to the kid. His kid, his little brother no matter the universe. 

"I'm here aren't I? If it's about the energy thing, you built these devices for my gloves and shoes to fix that. You could do it again for yourself!" 

There's silence in the room. Even with the portal raging mere feet away the world narrows to just the two of them 

Slowly, Hesitantly Nines hand wraps around sonics. Lifting his head with a soft eyes 

Sonic expression brightens. His ears perk with happiness and eyes light up with excitement as he looks at Nine. And Nine smiles back.

He looks happy. He looks like Tails.

Suddenly Nine lunges forward into a hug.  Sending them both back a few steps as sonic fumbles quickly to steady them and wrap his arms around the little fox in return 

"Thank you Sonic" 

Chuckling softly, Sonic ducks his face into the top of Nines fluffy head. Cradling him tightly in his arms. 

"Nah kid don't thank me. I'm just sorry you were alone for so long. But not anymore Alright? Not while i'm around" 

He can feel Nines back tremble softly as the fur on his chest becomes damp. Cueing Him to squeeze the kid a little harder before pulling back, Just enough to see Nines face 

"So, what do you say little buddy?" 

Nine turns his face up to meet Sonics. Fur wet with tears but eyes filled with a determination all his own and a smile as real as any his Tails had given him before. 

And he shoves Sonic as hard as he can 

for a moment the world stops.

"NINE!" wrenches itself out of Sonic's throat as he falls.

"Find me again" is choked out. Echoing  throughout the swirling vortex after him. Nines silhouette slowly smudging away

"Find your Tails and love him for me ok?" 

Because if there's one thing about Tails I think would be consistent throughout every universe is that given the chance he'll always love Sonic back. And he'll want to protect him. 

Even if that means having to give him up. If he has to send him away to protect him from himself, Tails will do it. Even if it might kill him.

Here's Nine alone, abandoned, Abused. So convinced of the world's evil he's decided it's not even worth it to try. It's safer never to try. And he's right to an extent.

And it occurs to Nine that this is too good to be true. Because sonic has to go and he can't follow.

Because here's everything he's told himself he didn't need!, Someone who says he knows him!, Who loves him unconditionally!, one person in the whole world who loves him despite his self imagined flaws! 

From the first moment they met it was an adventure! A wild ride one dangerous turn after another and there are more people now! The rebels with knuckles and Rouge. 

Rusty (because there's no way Sonic wont win her over too) The world is so much bigger and brighter now and it's because of Sonic! 

The instinct to save him even after he'd attacked the hedgehog. The heartbreak in his eyes when he didn't know who he was. And it's the overwhelming love in everything Sonic does from the bickering to simply trying to make Nine smile that really solidifies it for him. 

This dorky weirdo who broke into his workshop and got them kidnapped. Who gushes about his inventions and tries to cheer him up with hair-brained ideas.  bickering and laughing with him without a second thought. He Loves Nine….. 

He loves Tails…..  

There's a version of himself out there who grew up with this person so full of love. He'll be needing him back. 

And Nine can't go with him. 

Why?... I mean, i know why but, why?

I just found out there's a Clone Wars version of twelve days of Christmas. I am living.

So, we are getting this now, and Donald is kinda... Far from home, so yes, im also going to do that

“Alright, fox boy! You ready to have some real fun?” Surge threw Tails onto the floor, knocking the Miles Electric out of his hand. He tried to reach for the device, but was stopped as his capture stomped on his back. “Not so fast!”

“Whatever you’re planning, Sonic’s going to stop you!” Even if he was beaten and held hostage, no way was Tails about to show weakness. 

“Hah! Keep telling yourself that, kid! ‘Cause once we’re done here, I won’t be the only one he has to stop.”

That… did not sound good. Tails hated to admit it, but he was starting to get nervous. Surge dragged him by his left tail over to a large computer setup. She flipped him onto his back, pressed her foot on his chest to keep him in place, then proceeded to pull a glove with a strange stone on it. It sort of resembled Starline’s with the Warp Topaz, but different. Surge put it on her left hand, almost disgusted by it.

“This thing… caused us so much pain. I thought it was gone for good when I threw HIS into the fire pit, but it seems he had an extra… Lucky us.” 

With that, she slammed it down on Tails’s face. “Let’s get started!”

“So, this is the place?” Sonic asked as he turned to Kit. 

“Y-yes, sir. This is where we… w-where we lived.” The young fennec’s voice was more meek than usual. After Surge took off with Tails, the blue duo chased after them. Honestly, Sonic was surprised Kit stayed with him instead of going back to her. The hedgehog wanted to know if there was anywhere Kit thought Surge would go. This was the only one that came to mind. One of Eggman’s bases in the middle of the desert. 

“Huh. Starline sure made himself comfortable.” As the two made their way into the base, Sonic looked at Kit. “So, tell me again why you two had it out for us? We never met, yet Surge acted like I was her sworn enemy.” 

“W-we were… because… y-you…” Kit mumbled. 

Sonic didn’t understand. He knew the kid was on edge, but he couldn’t make out what he was trying to say. He was more of a nervous wreck than when Sonic first met Tails. Tails…

“Don’t worry,” Sonic reaffirmed. “That whacky doctor won’t bother you again.” The feelings were mixed. Sonic never considered death an option, unless there was no other way, but Starline caused so much trouble. Bringing Eggman back, which led to the Metal Virus, trying to capture Tails, kidnapping Belle, and now whatever he did to Surge and Kit. It must have been bad, but… he was gone now. All that mattered was finding Tails. His little brother was tough and smart. He… he would definitely be alright. 

"Can I ask... why you call Tails your 'brother'?" Kit asked. You two aren't even the same species. How can that be?"

Sonic shook his head in amusement. "It's true we're not blood, but that doesn't make him any less of a brother to me." Kit turned his head in confusion. "We've been together for years. We both didn't really have anyone before, but when we met, we just clicked. I helped him be more confident in himself, and he's saved my skin more times than I can count. He always has my back, and I can count on him for anything. Because of him... my life changed. I wasn't going it solo anymore, and now I can't imagine my life without him."

"You mean, he's that important to you?"

"More important than anyone else."

Kit led Sonic down the endless hallways. Suddenly, he stopped at one door on the right side. His pale face went paler. He started to shake and breathe heavily, like he was having a panic attack. Was there something in there? 

“Stay here,” the blue hero told Kit. Sonic slowly walked into the room. There were giant test tubes of some sort of green liquid. They were big enough for Sonic to fit in, which made him even more unnerved. His eye caught something on the floor. Papers with sketches and writing on them. “Homing attack,” “Spin dash,” some kind of cycle of him vs Eggman. Why did Starline have all these notes? Sonic then saw more papers on the table. Designs for what looked like Surge and Kit, like different models of them. What struck him the most was was one image of a person with robotic replacements. Just then, the pieces started coming together, and Sonic felt his stomach drop. 

“He... made you?” 

Sonic looked back at Kit, who was now shaking up a storm. His eyes glowing with a horrific gleam. Some of the water was leaking from his pack, swishing around like frantic arms. “H-hurt us… changed us… m-made us forget… to… r-replace you…” 

Finally, Surge’s words before made sense. She blamed Sonic. He admitted didn’t quite understand what she was going on about in their first fight. She was ranting in anger, like throwing a tantrum, so he wasn’t sure what to make of it at the time. Now he did. Starline stole Surge and Kit’s lives, their identities, their freedom… everything for his plan. Sonic was ready to fight tooth and nail to save Tails, but now…

Sonic made his way back, knelt down and placed his hand on the crying fennec. “I’m sorry, Kit. I’m sorry I couldn’t do anything to stop him. But he can’t hurt you anymore. And once this is over, the both of you can live however you want.” 

Kit sniffled, wiping the tears from his eyes. “B-both of us?” The water tendrils began to recede.

“We’re going to save Tails, and Surge. She’s important to you too, right?” Kit nodded his head. Sonic ruffled the kid’s hair, stood up, turned his head toward the door at the end of the room, and took a deep breath. “Let’s get this over with.” 

As if the last area wasn’t “cheery” enough, this room had even more test tubes. Sonic was just relieved they all looked empty. He couldn’t even begin to imagine what being trapped in there was like. 

“Hey! I know you’re watching! We’re here!” Surge came out from behind one of the tubes in front of them in response to Sonic’s voice. She has a cautious air about her, not sure what to expect but ready to fight. “Listen, I don’t want to fight you. Just let Tails go, and we can all walk away.” 

Surge’s attention was more focused on Kit. She slowly clenched her fists, electricity sparking. “After everything we’ve been through… what they’ve done to us… you go and join him?! I TOLD YOU YOU COULD ONLY TRUST ME! I TRUSTED YOU!!!” The anger and hurt in her voice was immense as the lightning she discharged. Sonic could even see some tears forming. She truly felt betrayed. 

Kit hid behind Sonic, cowering in fear and guilt. “I… I didn’t mean…” 

“Don’t be mad at him,” Sonic quickly defended. “He just didn’t know what to do. I was wrong, I thought you didn’t survive the fall from before. If I had… look, just tell me where Tails is. Please. We don’t have to fight.” 

Surge stared at her feet, trying to recompose herself. “Well then…” she turned back with glowing eyes. “Too bad it’s not up to you.” 

Suddenly, something slammed into Sonic, sending him flying to the other side of the room.

“Mr. Sonic!” Kit cried out. 

Sonic tried to pick himself up, holding the side of his head that hit against the wall. As his vision refocused, he saw his attacker. The last person he ever expected. 

“Tails? What are you—“ his sentence was cut off as Surge lunged at his throat. They collided with another wall as her grip tightened. “W-what… did you do?” he gasped. 

“Simple justice,” she cooed with venom in her voice. “You take my sidekick, I take yours.” 

“Tails would never turn against me! Right, little bro?” The fox was silent, stone cold gaze staring back. “Tails…” Sonic faced many horrors in his life, but nothing came close to the dread he felt from what he heard next. 

“I don’t know you.”

NOTES: I cut out Eggman and the Wisps so I could focus more on these four. I wrote this up before we got the Prime clip of Sonic and Tails, but it made me even more emotional seeing how sad Sonic was when Tails didn’t know who he was. Let alone fight him. Kit's question was a last minute addition, and I think it really makes what happens at the end hit even harder. 😢
