oh boy. oh man. let’s do this.
The Mortal Instruments book series has a variety of very interesting parallels that sort of portray real life problems in a fantasy world, which is a good way of educating people on subconscious level about how repulsing some of the discrimination nowadays is.
Yes, I am talking about racism, I am talking about sexism, misogyny, homophobia, unhealthy parent/child relationship, rape and abuse, manipulation- all things wrong in our society.
Take the shadowhunters/downworlders concept. A privileged community, considering itself superior to a group of minorities: a blatant, clear example of racism, which is being called out and fought against.
That sounds good and what’s even better, one of the main characters (armed with the privileges of being white, male, heterosexual) becomes a downworlder and suddenly, he is apart of a minority too, and it does nothing to change or lessen the values he represents.
Why, do tell me, was it necessary to not only break every single working rule of the Shadowhunters Chronicles fantasy world and come up with half-assed excuses to not only stop him from being apart of a minority, but also make him apart of the privileged community?
What’s the point of representing the fight for equality 6 whole books if at the end of the day, it is going to be proved that you are not valid if you’re not a certain thing. What’s the point of saying “Downworlders are not less than Shadowhutners” if your’e going to make a downworlder into a shadowhunter so that he is as privileged as they come? What was wrong with Downworlder Simon? Why was he any less than Shadowhunter Simon, if equality is something you root for?
Magnus and Alec were denied their happy ending: their chance to grow old together because if Magnus gave up his immortality, he would die of old age. Following the same logic, Simon should have died without his immortality, because he’s technically a vampire, an undead creature. The author went to poorly explained lengths to keep him alive and make him a Shadowhunter. Why couldn’t Magnus become mortal and stay alive in the exact same sequence is still a mystery. This is not even the case.
The case is- I do understand that these are cassandra’s characters and she’s free to do to their fate whatever she pleases, but my point is that this plot twist is completely unnecessary and doesn’t really make sense. It literally went against everything she tried to make her books into.
Inbred by Ethel Cain, been listening to that so much its insane

every so often im struck by the memory of one of my college professors getting very angry with our class (art history of pompeii 250) because when she excitedly detailed the ingenious roman invention of heated floors in bathhouses via hearths in small crawlspaces, we asked who was tending the fires. she said "oh, slaves i suppose. but that isnt the point". and we said that it actually very much was the point. she had just told us that in roman society there were dozens of people, maybe hundreds, who spent every day of their enslaved lives crawling in cramped, hot, smoky tunnels to light fires to warm pools of water (which they were not allowed to swim in). how could that not be the point?
she wanted us to focus on the art, on the innovation of heated plumbing, on the tiles and decorations of the bathhouses, and all we wanted to do was learn more about the people under the floors. and she didn't know anything more about that. in fact, she said she thought we were focusing too much on superfluous details.
it feels almost hokey to put too fine a point on the idea im getting at here but i will anyway: There are a lot of people who are still under the floors. all these beautiful, convenient, brilliant innovations of modern society (think fast fashion, chatgpt, uber, doordash) are still powered by people working in inhumane, untenable conditions.
the people who run these systems want you to focus on the good - who doesnt love warm water? - but if anything is going to improve or change in our lifetimes, you need to examine these things with an attentive, critical, and empathetic eye. and for fucks sake stop ordering from amazon

back in the heyday of mlp fandom there was one specific guy that commissioned insane amounts of self insert shipping art with pinkie pie. when the finale and confirmed pinkie fucked weird al instead he got a comic of his oc watching longingly at them like walking through the park with their kid and just solemnly accepting it and it was the funniest shit to me. he took it so seriously it was like a genuine breakup
THIS IS SO FUNNY HE GOT CUCKED BY WEIRD AL
Queen.
Thanks for answering! 🥰
Yeah I think I would agree with that!
I've wanted to ask this for weeks and forgot time and time again, but after the ask about fire and now the one with the twins getting hurt I finally have to get it out:
Do you think the twins reactions to fire are different from each other? Does one hate it more? After your post about which one is more evil (which I still absolutely LOVE by the way) would maybe Jane for example get next to fire if Aro orders it, reluctantly probably, but she would do it, and Alec is refusing it completly? Does Jane maybe react more to the sight of fire and Alec hates the smell more?
Oooooo I love this!
See the thing is, there gifts manifested basically on what they wanted in that moment right? Jane was furious, she wanted to cause pain. For her, fire and flame are akin to fury, and she has plenty of it. She can be around fire quite easily given how its used to turn the enemies of her coven to ash. The only time she panics is when she is forced to be near fire. The heat emnating from the flames is too much for her and she will completely meltdown.
Alec is the one who completely wanted to be numb to it all, to forget it was happening. He cannot stand anything to do with fire, though he can somewhat control his reactions. Those who know him well will see the way be stiffens at the smell of smoke, see the way his nostrils flare and he hisses quietly when he sees it engulf a person. Enemy or no, he doesn't wish this fate on anyone. He adamantly refuses to be near fire. You'll see when Irina dies in breaking dawn, he remains on Demetri's left hand side, always keeping someone he trusts between him and the flames.
