i feel like they should give charles a cane in the comics (if they haven’t already?)
cause they all seem to insist on him walking
i just think it would be cool if they didn’t like erase the fact that charles is/was a wheelchair user 🤨
now i’m not disabled so i have probably no say in this but it would be cool if they still included some form of representation?
idk just a thought
What’s this I hear about a DRK? KIRIGIRI CONTENT??? OH MY LORD, PLEASE. I’m sorry. I’m definitely behind, would you mind telling me where you guys are getting this novel stuff? I am so freaking BEHIND! I got Danganronpa Decadence and I’m currently trying to 100% all the games but I hear there’s a bunch of visual novels I’m missing out on. Like Makoto’s worst day or something? And a DR If or some other kind of short stories? I’m sure I’m getting the names wrong but I want ALL the content please.
WELCOME TO THE PARTY! There's honestly soooooooooooooo much out there but I'm going to try to give you everything I can that's available in English!
This... took quite a while to compile, so I'm sorry I was so slow in replying. But it's a lot! It took me a few hours to put together, so I hope it’s really useful!
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (game/visual novel currently available on PC, PS4, Xbox One/Series S/Series X, Switch, PS Vita, mobile) - Features "School Mode" once you finish the main story, which lets you learn even more about the characters and get closer to them.
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair (game/visual novel currently available on PC, PS4, Switch, PS Vita, mobile) - This is also known as "Super Danganronpa 2: Farewell Despair Academy" in Japan, so sometimes people call it "SDR2." Includes "Island Mode" once you finish the main story - it's basically "School Mode" from DR1 all over again - plus a side game featuring Usami/Monomi.
Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls (video game currently available on PC, PS4, PS Vita... although Spike Chunsoft just last month put out a poll gauging fan interest in a Nintendo Switch port! So I’m hopeful that it’s coming!)
Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope’s Peak (anime series currently available [officially] via Funimation site/app or in two Blu-Ray sets)
Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony (game/visual novel currently available on PC, PS4, PS Vita, Switch) - This one is also known as "New Danganronpa V3: Everyone's New Semester of Killing" in Japan, so sometimes people call it "NDRV3." Takes place in a separate universe from the DR1-3 timeline but still references those events at some points. It also contains multiple extra game modes available once you complete the mains tory, including the beloved AU "Ultimate Talent Development Plan" aka "UTDP."
The lesser side game:
Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp - A complicated side game that you absolutely shouldn't play until you get through 1, 2, UDG and V3. Even though this is an Alternate Universe (AU) story separate from the main games, it is HEAVILY PACKED with spoilers for those games. This one is basically an expanded version of UTDP, but it's not in the same universe as UTDP or the main games, but it nevertheless references ALL of those games (including UTDP mode), so uh yeah? And it's kind of obtuse to play, but here's the guide I wrote on it.
There are also various official English manga releases via Dark Horse Manga, including a manga adaption of DR1, a manga adaption of Ultra Despair Girls, and two partial adaptions of Danganronpa 2 that both end partway into the story - one of which is told entirely from Komaeda’s POV. But ultimately, those are just different versions of the stories that already exist in the games.
The games (and DR3 anime) are undoubtedly the primary canon, but these side stories are sometimes subtly referenced in the main games.
Danganronpa Zero - A two-part light novel. Arguably the most canonical of the light novels because it’s written by series creator/writer Kazutaka Kodaka. Two characters from it also cameo in Danganronpa 3. Both parts are currently available here.
Makoto Naegi’s Worst Day Ever - Another story written by Kodaka, this one is a short tale that was included with some releases of DR2. It’s kind of a weird prequel to DR1. Here it is.
Danganronpa IF - An AU tale about what happens when Naegi gets the “Escape Button” item during DR1. Heavily features Mukuro Ikusaba. This is available in-game once you complete Danganronpa 2. Or you could just watch it on YouTube. You really only need to know DR1 to follow this one. I include it here despite being an AU because elements of characterization that revealed herein were officially made canon later on.
Ultra Despair Hagakure - Learn what happened to Yasuhiro Hagakure and his strange companion during the events of Ultra Despair Girls. This is available in-game once you complete DRAE: UDG. And it does require knowledge of Ultra Despair Girls to make sense. Of course, you can find this one on YouTube, too. (I'm happy to report that it even includes a couple snippets of voice acting.)
Danganronpa Kirigiri - A series of seven (!!!) light novels about Junior High Kirigiri and her best friend Yui Samidare investigating a variety of crimes prior to DR1.
- Volume 1 is here - There’s been something like three attempts to fully translate Vol. 2 over the years... but so far it’s never been done to my knowledge. :( - @drmedicsgamesurgerysurgerysurgery’s in-progress translation is up to Chapter 3 right now, and it’s the most current attempt. Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3. I once had a PDF of an almost complete translation (it was missing a chapter or two in the third quarter of the book?) but I can’t seem to find it anymore? Anybody know where that went? I’ll dig through some files of my own to try and find it... - Volume 3 is here. Yes, Volume 3 got a full translation before Volume 2... these things happen. *shrug* - @jinjojess has done summaries/reaction posts to Volumes 2 through 4 + part of volume 5, which are available at this link. They include her own opinions and speculation in addition to the summaries of events. - You can also read a different partial summary of Volume 5 here. - We have nothing translated of Volumes 6-7 in any detail at this point... just a few snippets of info from those who were able to read them.
Danganronpa Togami - A series of three light novels focused on one of Byakuya’s half-sisters (Shinobu) and her relationship with Byakuya as they navigate the post-Tragedy pre-Killing School Life world and cope with their own messed-up family. Be forewarned that this series is kind of a pariah among the fandom, and there’s no reference made to it in the games, so it’s pretty easy to ignore.
- Volume 1 is here. Or you can listen to @drmedicsgamesurgery's abridged audio adaption, if you prefer.- Summary of Volume 2 is available to read here or you can experience another abridged audio adaption by @drmedicsgamesurgery. - Summary of Volume 3 is here, again courtesy of @drmedicsgamesurgery. ETA: They now have an abridged audiobook adaption of this volume, too.
Kirigiri Sou - A visual/sound novel telling a tale of a particularly strange case encountered by Kyoko Kirigiri. Read the full translation here.
Danganronpa Gaiden: Killer Killer - A manga spinoff that takes place prior to Danganronpa 3: Future Side and assumes you are familiar with the characters from that anime. However, it mostly stars all-new characters as some investigators from the Future Foundation look into some murders and, y’know, stuff happens. This series was notable for the fact that it wasn’t revealed to be connected to Danganronpa at all until Chapter 3 came out. It’s kind of an interesting insight into the world beyond the characters we know, but there’s nothing in here that’s required reading at all. Anyway, read Volume 1 here and read Volume 2 here.
Behold the lowest rung of canon. It’s debatable whether any of this counts even in the “Expanded Universe” sense.
Various “Anthology” and “4-Koma Kings” Manga - There are a ton of these, all featuring short stories and sometimes 4-panel (or “4koma”) strips about the casts of the various games and things happening to them between the scenes of the games (and/or the School/Island Modes in said games). Check out @shslscans’ pages of in-progress manga and completed manga for tastes of a bunch. And there’s a few others that team has completed but not included on those pages which you can just find on their front page. Or there’s some others available via @kamase-megane and @manlyronpa that you can read here. These things are honestly a LOT of fun and provide some of my favorite “official” interactions - even if they aren’t necessarily “canon.” DEFINITELY recommended.
Various Alternate Perspective Manga - The same links I just provided to @shslscans also include translations of manga that provide non-player-character-specific perspectives on the events of Danganronpa 2 or Ultra Despair Girls, if that’s something interesting to you.
Danganronpa 1-2 Beautiful Days - This is an official collection of fan-written short stories about the characters and events of DR1 and DR2. Despite this being an official DR publication, the “fan-written” nature of the work makes it inherently non-canon. But it’s still cool, and the translation is right here.
Dangnaronpa: The Academy of Hope and the Students of Despair - The Manga is a weird side manga that tells the story of each chapter of DR1 from the perspective of the dead - meaning that you see events through the eyes of the killer and/or victim of each chapter. It is NOT canon and the translation is also NOT finished, plus @manlyronpa indicates the translation is unreliable in the late parts. But here is what we have.
Danganronpa: The Demo Manga - A manga adaption of the promotional demo for DR1, which contained an alternate version of the first chapter. An interesting curiosity available to you here.
Other Things? - You can see even more DR stuff that’s either adaptions of the games/minor side projects/untranslated books and such at this page on @manlyronpa’s blog.
Now, look - I probably missed even more stuff, honestly. But I think this will cover MOST of what’s out there. *long exhale*
I hope this helps you out as you progressively dive deeper into the fandom!
One Last Thing: Any time I post spoilery stuff from the games, I always make sure to label it appropriately. Here's the basic guide to my spoiler tags, which you can block from your view if you have/get a Tumblr account. :)
