for the last 2+ weeks, the Amazon has been catching fire. Yes, it’s the season where that’s normal but because of the sayings (aka incentive) of our new president, some farmers are taking advantage of that and intentionally setting the trees on fire. Yesterday, because of this, the sky of São Paulo looked like this. AT THREE IN THE AFTERNOON.

Hospitals of the northern states are filling up with people (especially children and seniors) claiming they can’t breathe properly. ALREADY ENDANGERED ANIMALS ARE DYING. THIS IS SERIOUS.

Germany and Norway, huge donators to the Amazon cause will stop sending money because they don’t see results (that can also be credited to our president, who has been tweeting angrily ever since - not because he cares about the environment, btw). That money gives this guy and his team equipment to save little guys like these:

THIS AFFECTS EVERYONE, NOT JUST BRAZILIANS. The Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world, and it’s being destroyed. WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.

If your country is holding elections, vote for someone who cares about this. Don’t let another Bolsonaro or another Trump have the power to do something and then do nothing. This is going to shape our future — if we have one.

The next day passes in a blur. You go through the same daily routine almost unconsciously. Jane has to nudge you various times to remind you to smile and for once you are thankful for her presence. You are only conscious enough during lunch to let your team know that practice is being held at 4:30 until further notice. You can tell that they’re confused by the last minute decision but they’re smart enough not to ask.

You find yourself dreading the final bell and when it finally rings, you have to resist the urge to just leave and ditch Reggie. Of course you don’t actually go through with it and you begrudgingly get up from your seat. You walk at an alarmingly slow pace all the way to the library and still manage to get there five minutes before the agreed meeting time.

You take a deep breath, giving yourself a mental pep talk before tugging at the sleeves of your sweater and opening the door. The air around you feels thick and the low buzz of whispered conversations fills your ears. You are surprised to see Reggie already sitting in one of the tables, tapping a pencil against the surface at an even beat. You look around and are momentarily horrified at the amount of people. You don’t move from your spot, willing Reggie to look up and he thankfully does a few second later.

You nod your head slightly once he meets your eyes and walk in the opposite direction of his table. He stares after you confused for a second before it dawns at him and he ignores the small feeling of hurt that fills his chest. He picks up his backpack and follows behind you at a safe distance.
