Sometimes it’s Texas toast garlic bread, the kind that’s only buttered on one side and can be popped in the toaster instead of the oven.

Sometimes it’s because a friend has tickets to a movie I want to see.

Sometimes it’s chocolate milk, or mac and cheese, or spaghetti with too much parmesan.

Sometimes it’s the way a sunbeam breaks through the clouds and looks like a solid shaft of glow.

Sometimes it’s the super fizz of a freshly opened can of soda, and the way it slides over ice when I pour it into a glass.

Sometimes it’s because there are still sentences to write, stories to finish, and more importantly, stories to start.

Sometimes it’s because I made a promise to every animal in my care.

Sometimes it’s seeing just one of my pets again.

Sometimes it’s a clear blue sky on the edge of summer

Sometimes it’s a cloudy day at the cusp of fall, when all the leaves are starting to change and winter is whispering in the breeze.

Sometimes it’s the way trees look after an ice storm, where they are outlined in a coating of ice that makes them look like they came straight out of the land of elves.

Sometimes it’s a nap in the sun on a patch of intensely green grass, the really good kind that smells like grass and may as well be a carpet.

Sometimes it is my partner, whose feelings are important to me.

Sometimes it is my friends, because I can’t turn eight into seven.

Sometimes it’s rainfall in the sunshine.

Sometimes it’s nothing at all, just the act of putting one foot in front of the other until I find the next thing worth staying alive for. Anyway, I’m still here. I’m still putting one foot in front of the other. I intend to do so forever. So far, so good.
