Gwen backpedaling to hide her crush: A story in three parts.
“There are a few things in life so beautiful they hurt: swimming in the ocean while it rains, reading alone in empty libraries, the sea of stars that appear when you’re miles away from the neon lights of the city, bars after 2am, walking in the wilderness, all the phases of the moon, the things we do not know about the universe… and you.”
— Beau Taplin
And the whole damn medieval knight lifestyle.
for this holiday season i’m asking for old books and a sword
Hmmmmmm
Another power move of the 2020
I look at you and I wonder about myself. Would I knowingly give up my life for something?
You have to have a reason. Something you care about. Something that’s more important than anything.
Alec was on his phone as he queued for coffee that cold February morning in his favorite cafe. Only stepping forward as the feet behind his screen moved away. He glanced up at the menu, despite ordering the same thing everyday for the last year. Halfway through another ridiculous buzz feed quiz, a lilting voice, dripping sass, asked him the most important question this early in the morning.
“What can I get you?“
Alec rattled off Izzy’s insane drink order and his simple large, black coffee.
“Hmm, tall, dark and bitter? Just how I like them.“
Alec’s head shot up, finally making eye contact with the barista. Well, he tried to but was immediately distracted by the man’s skull makeup. Smokey sockets surrounded deep brown eyes, highlighting the twinkle that Alec was certain must be pretty much permanent, black lips complete with heart-shaped dimples made the guys teeth look bright and sharp.
With a delicate eyebrow raised, the man smirked and Alec’s mouth went dry.
“Name?“
“Huh?” Alec replied eloquently.
“For the cup?“
“Oh! Alec.” He searched for a tag, finding ‘Magnus’ embroidered onto his apron.
“Thank you, Alec. The…elaborate one might take a minute, have a seat.” He handed off the labeled cups to his younger colleague and gestured to the counter space nearest him. Alec slid onto the stool and watched Magnus’ hands as he busied himself nearby, wiping down the counter and rearranging things needlessly. It was when he drifted close to him for the third time that Alec cleared his throat.
“So, what’s with the-” He waved his finger around his own face and Magnus frowned before he seemed to remember that he had a full face of makeup.
“It’s Halloween!” He flung his arms wide to gesticulated flamboyantly, complete with a small bow.
Alec knew he was staring but he couldn’t help but be fascinated by this ridiculous man. He cleared his throat. “Bit late, isn’t it?“
"It’s never too late for Halloween.” Magnus drawled with a wink and Alec had to admit the man had a point.
“You new?” Alec blurted out. “I mean, I haven’t seen you. I’d have noticed…I mean.” God, he was a moron.
“You’d have noticed, huh?” That damned smirk again made Alec’s face grow warm and he knew he was blushing, his ears were probably glowing by now. “I just moved here.”
Alec thanked whoever was watching that his idiocy was interrupted by his name being called. Before he could move, Magnus had dashed to the pick up area to intercept his cups for a moment then he leaned on the bar holding his out with a shy smile.
“Thank you for stopping by. Come again soon.”
Alec stuttered a thank you and proceeded to stumble off his stool. Face hot, he left clutching his drinks. He looked back for a moment to see Magnus give him a dainty wave as he watched him leave.
It wasn’t until Izzy hit him with a barrage of questions about who he had met, that he noticed, with a smile, the phone number scrawled along the side of his cup.

The sword in the stone episode is practically the essence of the whole show. It is Arthur and Merlin, both, that stand before all the people, but everyone's eyes are on Arthur, as usual. Merlin used his magic under their very noses and not a soul noticed his eyes glow gold. The scene where Arthur pulls out the sword? If that isn't a symbol of Arthur and Merlin's entire time together, then I don't know what is. Arthur is fully aware of his strengths as a warrior, but doubts his kingly qualities, and even though his love interest Gwen is there, he needs Merlin to reassure him. Merlin tells him of the legend of the sword and takes him to the sword. Mind you, he is fully aware it is by magic that the sword is stuck in the stone, and that it is stuck fast, but also that using magic he could easily get Arthur to pull it out with his thumb alone. Nonetheless, Merlin stands back and first lets Arthur try. He lets him try anyway. Despite. Because he knows it is impossible for someone to pull it out without magic, and yet he is so sure Arthur is the greatest king to ever exist that he momentarily forgets that a major part of the legend is his own brainchild. But Arthur cannot, and yet he does not fail. Because he's got a Merlin. When Arthur is struck with panic and dread when he realizes for a moment how impossible the idea is, Merlin is there, as always, telling him what he needs to hear, a part of his heart and brain in a whole different person. Merlin tells him, "Have faith." This may or may not be the first time he's said it out loud, but the idea was always there. Merlin has no great warrior-like skills that Arthur knows of, and yet he is dragged along on every great and perilous journey and quest, because he has faith in himself when Merlin is around. And they always somehow get back home with two hands, two feet, and their own teeth. He has faith in Merlin. And the most important part, Arthur does manage to pull the sword out. He knew it was impossible, and he knew he did it. He knew it was magic, but he doesn't complain, because it would be foolish to refuse magic, because one, it was then that they needed it the most, and two, because magic has always been at the heart of Camelot.
