Red River Hog

I always wanted to see one of this ones. I thought it was like an experiment: A vibrant orange pig with ears like elf and beard. I saw one for the first time in a zoo in Valencia, Spain a few years back.

The species is common, and there are no major threats. The main threat will be the growing pressure from hunting for commercial bushmeat trade. It is one of the most hunted species in the Congo Basin and it makes up 40% of the bushmeat sold on markets in Gabon. 

Experiments of raising in captivity have shown its susceptibility to stress during capture, low rate of survival of young (11–57%), but rapid adaptation to confined environment and human company.

Feed: Herbivorous Habitat: Subtropical Dry Forest Status and Conservation: Endangered The largest elephant species, it stands as the tallest terrestrial animal on Earth, reaching heights of up to 3.96 meters. Highly social and exceptionally intelligent, elephants exhibit remarkable traits.

Given their impressive size and strong social bonds, elephants are effectively free from predators. Although young elephants may occasionally fall prey to lions or hyenas, their overall vulnerability is minimal.

Regrettably, the sole threat to their existence is us, humans. Throughout history, we have hunted elephants for sustenance and weaponry. Babyrousa babyrussa

The skull of the Babirussa along with the important teeth of the lower jaw in order to be compare with its relative found by Clement Van Burden, also in the Jungles of Vietnam. The Sus Cofra Satanae or Satanic Boar as Clement decided to named after studied its destructive behavior.

Hello! I'm so proud to finally present you the artwork with all the Perissodactyla order including its subspecies (Rhinos, Tapirs, and Horses). Took me more than a year to finish but I am really happy with the result. The artwork includes the common name, its Latin name, and its conservation status. 46 animals in total of which 10 are sadly already extinct.

Donkey Equus africanus asinus

Feed: Herbivore Habitat: All Around the World Status and Conservation: Data Deficient The donkey—a truly remarkable creature—is often subject to mistreatment and disrespect. It's unfairly linked to notions of being "dumb" due to its strong-willed nature. When a donkey chooses not to obey a command, no force can sway its decision. However, this behavior doesn't signify stupidity; rather, it reflects their rebellious spirit. Call me Domkey from now on! I will carry that nickname with pride. Wanna see the full-body illustration? Indian Rhinoceros This one is by far the hardest illustration I have made on this blog. Pedro Jarque, a very well-known photographer, has an excellent photograph of the animal. The photograph has so many details that I didn't want to miss but it wasn't easy to translate. It took me forever to understand the skin of the rhino and because is my favorite animal, I wanted to look real nice.

Anyways, finishing up the African rhinos, we move to the Asian ones, and what better way to begin with than the Indian Rhinoceros.

It is the biggest of all the species of rhinos although some put the White rhinoceros in that place. They weren't easy to breed in captivity. The first recorded was in Kathmandu in 1826 and more than 100 years had to pass to have another born in captivity. There are zoo breeding programs in Europe and the USA that ensure the conservation of the species. Its conservation status is vulnerable and is protected in all its habitat ranges. Masai Giraffe

This one is the largest giraffe of all. 5.5 meters high! This subspecies of giraffe are the tallest animal on earth. That is incredible. They can weigh up to 1.3 Tons and one-third of that weight is in their neck.

Another interesting thing is their tongue which can be 50 cm long. It is prehensile and allows them to grab leaves graciously.

Its numbers have reduced by 50% in the last few decades. Although there are more than 22.000 in the wild, it is alarming that the numbers have plumbed so fast. There have been sights of albino giraffes (white) and also very dark ones (which are really beautiful).

As you know my plan is to do all mammals and every time I finish one, I feel that I am closer to my goal. I don't need to rush. Step by step I will get where I want to. Rothschild's Giraffe This animal classification is a little bit tricky. Some consider it a subspecies while others consider it an ecotype of the Nubian Giraffe. An ecotype is a species that develops physical differences due to its surroundings. However, genetically is the same species. The term is a little ambiguous because I think describes in many cases, a subspecies or the beginning of one. Rothschild's Giraffe is also known as the Baringo Giraffe or the Ugandan Giraffe. It is known to be one of the largest subspecies. Also, its sight, smell and hearing is well developed and its body is specially built for speed. However, the easiest way to differentiate this giraffe from the other subspecies is that it has five ossicones. Yes, five! (Ossicones are the name for the horns of the giraffes). The normal two that all giraffes have, one in the middle of the head and one behind each ear. Incredible. Is critically endangered despite being one of the best-evolved giraffes. That just can mean that is not the environment the one that is putting in danger the survival of this animal but us. Nature takes over the weakest, we humans, take over the strongest. Dwarf Giraffes? Well yeah. I just discovered that these subspecies have Dwarf Giraffes. They are about 3 meters high, which is close to two meters less than the normal size of these animals.
