It amazes and delights me that people are still digging this ridiculous thing I made 11 years ago.  That's something like three centuries in Internet Time.

This is a new variant of Scrabble I'm working on which is fairly mean to its players.  Rare letters are no longer rare, point values are rendered mostly meaningless, and you have to make valid plays without actually seeing any of the words on the board. Please click over and share your thoughts, I'd love some input on this.  Would it actually be any fun to play this way?

Way Back In 1999, I Was Attempting To Capture Frames From A Video File On A Playstation 1 Disc; I No

Way back in 1999, I was attempting to capture frames from a video file on a Playstation 1 disc; I no longer remember which game it was.  The process of accessing video from a PS disc in a regular CD-ROM drive was unstable to begin with in those days, and it didn’t help that I really wasn’t sure what I was doing.  Instead of grabbing usable screenshots from the video, my wonky software (which I seem to remember being in Japanese with no translation available) and wonkier settings generated four 320x224 bitmaps which, while unrecognizable, were surprisingly pretty.

I’ve been saving the images ever since, hoping to find something to do with them.  I haven’t managed to find anything yet, so I stitched the four frames together into one image and am posting it here.  Instead of using the Creative Commons License I normally apply to my work, I’m posting this graphic entirely public domain and free of any restriction in hopes that folks might get some sort of use out of this old accidental digital art.

This Past Wednesday I Volunteered To Add Something Unique To The Thank-you Gifts We Gave To Off The Hook

This past Wednesday I volunteered to add something unique to the thank-you gifts we gave to Off the Hook listeners who pledged their support during our final fundraising episode of the season.  During the show I drew a series of telephones, all different, all off the hook, one after another in a live marathon.  Everyone who donated to WBAI during the show's live broadcast will be receiving a random one of these.

This was lots of fun.  I did better than I thought I might both time and quality wise, and the fundraising was successful with many awesome folks supporting our listener-funded exploits.

You can listen to the episode by going to this archive page and selecting the May 18, 2011 link.

Steve Wozniak (b. August 11, 1950)

The old-school hacker and phone phreak known as "Woz" is celebrated worldwide for his co-founding of Apple Computer, his pioneering achievements in the hardware field, his work with the EFF, his love of pranks and good humor, his enduring hacker spirit, and - in some circles - his dancing ability.

Joybubbles (May 25, 1949-August 8, 2007)

Joybubbles (May 25, 1949-August 8, 2007)

Joybubbles (born Josef Engressia) was an early phone phreak.

With perfect pitch he was able to control the phone system by simply whistling the tones normally generated by Bell's systems, an ability he accidentally discovered at age seven.

A dramatic reading I performed from the LiveJournal my old friend Murd0c used to have, as originally posted by him on September 1, 2003.  NSFW for sweariness.

Unfortunately the post I'm reading can no longer be seen; Murd0c deleted his LiveJournal because he didn't want a bunch of crap he wrote as a teenager still out there.  I don't see what his damn problem is, this was some ace material.

The T-shirt I Designed For Off The Hook, The Radio Show Of Which I Am Part.

The t-shirt I designed for Off the Hook, the radio show of which I am part.

WBAI, the nonprofit community radio station which airs our show, must periodically run fundraising drives to keep the bills paid. This shirt has been exclusively available as a thank-you gift to listeners who donated to those drives during our show's broadcast.

Anyone you see wearing this shirt has either been amazingly generous in showing their support and keeping our show and station on the air, or attacked our supporter and stole their shirt.  Either way, that person's sense of style is unquestionable.
