Before he'd met ____, Hawks had always viewed parties like this with distaste. It was really just more work disguised as fun, with the countless schmoozers to butter up and sources of information to pump for the Hero Safety Commission. But now that he had someone to bring to these events, he could enjoy a little break and actually have some real fun for a change. He pretended to listen to what one of the other guests was talking about while he had his arm wrapped around ____’s waist and rubbed circles into her hip with his thumb. Thankfully the other guy didn’t talk for much longer and excused himself to get a drink. Now that they were alone, Hawks saw her smile up at him. “What’s got you smirking, chickadee?”

____ shrugged. “Aside from getting to be on the arm of my favorite guy, enjoying a night out, and having a ton of free rich-people food? Not much,” she replied.

Hawks laughed. “Think they’ll notice you trying to sneak some stuff into your purse?”

“Hope not, since I’ve got a bag full of those mini-quiches in here.” She patted the top of her purse and winked. “I can grab some of those chicken kebab things you were scarfing down too, if you want--”

An older woman in an elegant gown interrupted ___ with a well-manicured hand on her shoulder. “Oh, ____! There’s a Hero here you have to meet,” she gushed, quickly giving a little nod of greeting to Hawks. “She’s the one I was telling you about, the former contortionist in the circus? Here, I’ll introduce you…” The woman took ____’s hand and marched over to the other side of the room where a lithe-looking woman in a sleek black suit was nursing a glass of champagne, leaving Hawks alone. He was quickly dragged into a conversation by a big-name fashion designer who went on and on about how he'd love to work with Hawks either for a new Hero suit or just for a magazine shoot.

A few minutes passed by, but every time Hawks tried to edge his way around the room to ____, either she or he would be pulled into a new conversation that they were only half-participating in. Hawks was used to hiding his boredom and irritation at these parties, but a keen eye would pick up on the way his feathers stayed ruffled and stiffened more whenever someone else blocked him from getting to ____. He was about to pretend he had to use the restroom just to try and text her to maybe fake a work emergency so they could get home, when suddenly he felt a warm hand on his shoulder. He turned around, already about to plaster on his "I'm totally listening" face again when he saw ____ standing right in front of him.

"Oh my God, why does everyone have to talk to us," she breathed. "Seriously, I should take a sip of champagne every time one of them goes 'oooh, you're so lucky to be with the #2 Hero!' or asking for me to shill their business to you for 'em."

Hawks took her hand to keep himself from losing her and made his way to the dance floor where couples were swaying elegantly to the string quartet playing nearby. "Well, they won't try to break us up here," he offered, pulling her closer and putting an arm around her waist. "Mind if I have this dance?"

____ rested one hand on his forearm while clasping his other hand, and the two of them began to dance together. "Your funeral," ____ replied with a shy smile. "I'm just copying what I've seen on TV shows where couples dance right now."

Hawks laughed. "You're doing just fine," he assured, closing his wings a bit as they danced around one of the couples nearby. "But if you're too nervous, you can just stand on my feet if you want and I'll guide ya."

____ snorted. "I'm not a five year old," she retorted. "But thanks for the offer."

As the two of them danced and swayed, laughing and chatting with each other, they began to notice the crowd that had started to gather by the ballroom to fawn over them. They could hear the hushed tones of a pair of older women sighing at how "cute" they were while they danced, and a man remarked that he hadn't ever seen Hawks laugh or smile like that, even in interviews or when hanging out after work with other Heroes.

Hawks was about to joke about how even when they were alone on the floor now, they still couldn't get the spotlight off of them; he stopped when he felt ____ rest her head against his chest as the swayed together (causing another wave of "aww"s and adoring squeals from the crowd watching them), and he slowly found himself forgetting his surroundings. It was hard to tune out years of training telling him to always be alert, but ____ was always talented at making him switch from Hawks the Hero and Safety Commission's prized asset to Keigo the boyfriend. Keigo the human being.

Keigo held her a little closer and furled his wings around the two of them to give them a brief moment of privacy as they danced together. Once they were obscured, he kissed the top of ____'s forehead and felt them smile against his dress shirt. "What's that smile for, Angel?"

____ looked back up at him and kissed his cheek. "You, genius," she replied, playfully pinching his arm through his suit. "Well...that, and I was thinking about how my purse is going to smell like mini-quiches and chicken for at least a week after we get home."

The two of them laughed and continued to exchange small kisses as they danced until the song began to fade. Once the string quartet ended their performance, Hawks kissed her lips one more time before closing his wings and letting the crowd get a glimpse of the two of them again as they applauded.
