Everything about this was amazing, really, but a few of my favorite parts of it:

The Re:Mind trailer convinced me that there IS an alternate scenario after Rikuâs sacrifice that went differently than the one we saw. Props to Sleeping Realm for calling that one right on the friggin dot, btw. Bravo.
I believe itâll end with Rikuâs true death, and that ties in with my Master of Masters theory.
The Master watches Master Xehanort with the Gazing Eye at the tip of No Name. Of all the keyblades that hold Gazing Eyes, Vanitasâs Void Gear is the only one that contains two located in the shaft.
If one eye sees, the Master would still need the other eye to see what it was seeing. Even though he implies that itâs literally his eye when he gives No Name to Luxu, itâs not really, itâs just one of the eyes from his keyblade.
Also on that topic, there is a shot of Sora in the KH3 intro I find super duper weird.
The pupil in Soras left eye is a slit for a moment, like the Gazing Eye. Itâs just an illusion as a result of reflected light in his eye, but you can bet its intentional.
The Masterâs study is also full of gears, which seems like it might be too obvious but hey, there it is.
The Unversed symbol is similar to that of the Dream Eaters, and I think ties into my theory that Vanitasâs heart contains Soraâs darkness and Rikuâs darkness also. Which is why itâs divided in three. The Master created the Chirithy, the very first Dream Eaters.
The only Keyblade Sora has ever been able to wield that holds a Gazing Eye is End of Pain. Both he and Riku can wield it in DDD.
You can bet your butthole End of Pain represents Vanitas. All he wants, his sole driving purpose, is to end his existence of pain. This keyblade is a clue to Vanitasâs redemption, and it lies with Sora and Riku. But Sora has to accept Vanitas for what he is. Darkness. Itâs shown in the Keyblade Graveyard that Sora doesnt understand this yet, since he tries to convince Vanitas to stand with the light. And while Ventus accepts Vanitasâs choice, Sora does not. This is something Riku understands though, he figured it out in DDD: âI know the way. Consume the darkness, return it to light.â
Itâs not like Vanitas died here. His replica body was destroyed yes. But his heart, I assume, went back to the darkness. And if Sora was dragged down to the darkest abyss, like YMX warned him, and thatâs where he is in the secret ending, Vanitas will be there, right beside him.
In Kairiâs grandmothers story, its stated that one day, a door to the innermost darkness will open, and the true light will return. Mickey tells Sora in his first dive to the heart that he is the one that will open the door. As he gets closer to Riku, he gets closer to Vanitas, but this is how it must be, its Soraâs destiny to reunite with him. This is what the last passage of Destati is referring to.
Eh? What? You do not want it!?
Still it belongs to you
What you have lost
Will become one!
The story also states the the return of the true light will connect all the worlds once again.
When Ansem the Wise talks to Riku about the many hearts connected to Soraâs in DDD, he says:
âThey can be saved.â But only if Sora follows his heart.
I think Anti Black Coat was a Nightmare of Vanitas before his face changed, and could even have been the Master himself, pushing Riku to become stronger. Since the Master created Chirithy, Rikuâs Dream Eater powers are definitely related to him as well.
So after Rikuâs true death, Soraâs grief and rage allow darkness to enter his heart, and he and Vanitas become one. Sora becomes the being he was meant to be, his heart finally complete. This is the origin of Rage Form, and the meaning behind the segment of the final battle when Xehanort steals Soraâs light, forcing him into Rage Form, and Sora must attack him to regain his light.
But uniting with Sora does not end Vanitasâs pain, because he can feel Soraâs immense pain from losing Riku. Sora-Vanitas realizes he screwed up royally, and hatches a crazy elaborate plan to fix it. He travels back in time to the Age of Fairy Tales. Heâs able to do so because a past version of himself exists there: Ventus. He then sets his plan in motion and vanishes, I think, to the Realm of Darkness, for a century (or however long the timeframe is between Union X and when Xehanort was given No Name).
I assume this is where the Coda becomes relevant, jumping through the timeline through dreams and darkness, sleep and death, like how the Coda tells one to skip ahead to the ending of a piece of music, and can be very complex. The time travel rules of KH state that once you arrive in the past, you have to wait for time to pass naturally, so this shouldnât be possible. Time doesnt seem to work the same way in dreams however, and it definitely doesnt work the same way in the Realm of Darkness. Scala Ad Caelum is also most likely a huge part of this, since Xehanort said it was the nexus of all worlds, a place where all of his selves through time could be one.
He writes the Book of Prophecies based on what he already experienced in his past, but tells Luxu it was because he succeeded in his role. He does this to give Luxu confidence in himself for a seemingly impossible task, and apparently it worked. Luxu passing the No Name to Xehanort was still vital however, because it allows the Master to see what he wasnt previously aware of. He can now see Xehanortâs moves, and make counter moves. Like a chess game.
Also, when he wrote the final passage, when he said that the light would expire, he was literally talking about Riku.
By the time the Epilogue happens, when Luxu is talking with the Foretellers, he definitely knows that Sora is their Master as a teenager. And heâs seen the results of Sora and Rikuâs bond for himself. They changed the future through their love for each other, which should be impossible. You cannot change events that have already happened. But they did. When they are revived after Rikuâs sacrifice Xigbar even says âGotta make sure youâre not blundering your way toward a second failure.â Heâs not talking about the failure we had just witnessed.
The Masterâs favourite phrase, âMay your heart be your guiding keyâ, comes from Sora hearing Yen Sid say it, and he adopted it as his motto, his Ninja Way lol.
The traitor mentioned in the Lost Page is the Master himself. Xemnas tells Sora in DDD âAs your flesh bears the sigil, so your name shall be known as that⌠of a recusant.â He oddly says Soras FLESH bears the sigil, even though itâs merely emblazoned on his shirt. Gula deduced in Back Cover that whomever strays from their role must be the traitor. Sora is the traitor. He strayed from his role, because he failed to protect Riku like Aqua told him to. âYou make sure to stay with him, and keep him safe. Thatâs your job Sora.â
He let the light die.
The Black Box contains the Masterâs heart, which is Soraâs complete heart, and also most likely, his soul. In one of the Secret Reports, Ienzo writes that the hearts within Soraâs are each contained within their own âboxesâ, and this is mentioned intentionally.
He intends to give the box to Riku. Heâs been waiting for countless years to save Rikuâs life, and literally give him his heart. This is the end of pain.
So romantic Iâm gonna die.

Ayyo all the squad here
Up until now, the light/darkness dichotomy was only ever something I interpreted as being a plot-specific force within the narrative. Sure, we had characters verbally telling us that darkness is related to negative emotions, light is related to friendship and positivity, etc. but beyond characters getting powered up for battle after verbally making those connections (âMy friends are my power,â basically anything that comes out of Ansem SODâs mouth), we donât really get a chance to see what that means.
A Fragmentary Passage connected the emotions to the forces in a much more obvious way, for me at least. Iâll never forget playing the mirror level that has Aquaâs inner monologue going the whole time and realizing that, holy shit, this game is about depression! And then we see the E3 trailer from this year. For her to get Norted, we know she had to succumb to The Darkness, and because we have her experience in AFP as a background, we know how she got to that point and exactly what she was feeling when it happened. (Yes, AFP ended on a more hopeful note, but ⌠I still think this is probably what happened).
Iâm playing through all the main games again, and suddenly, the rest of the series has a LOT more context. The Xehanort/Eraqus arguments get a lot more nuance. Honestly, I think Xehanort has a little bit of a point? Light and Darkness (ie: positive emotions and negative emotions) existing in a balance seems WAY healthier than just trying to have ALL POSITIVE EMOTIONS ALL THE TIME. This could apply to âThe closer you get to the light, the greater your shadow becomes.â The more you try to push down or hide your negative emotions in an attempt to remain positive 24/7, the more that negativity festers beneath the surface and can explode out of you. Maybe this is what happened with Terra. Dealing with the Darkness is something that has plagued him since he was a kid, but because light-obsessed Eraqus basically raised him, he had to repress negativity until it sorta just exploded in BBS. (As someone with mental health problems who grew up in a family that didnât talk about problems or emotions and just pretended everything was fine all the time⌠my most recent BBS playthrough hit me kind of hard.) Along these same lines âhearts of pure lightâ donât seem totally healthy either? Maybe itâs different for Princesses of Heart, because theyâre Naturally Occurring, but it makes total sense why my boy Ven was so fragile after Vanitas got ripped out of him. In any case I am REALLY SCARED for Sora. I know he was close to getting Norted in DDD, but if he just tries to stay positive all the time because so many people are counting on him my boy is going to BREAK.
Now, when I see the darkness cloud animation emanating off a character, I have context for what that means and what that feels like. When Terra uses his dark command styles, I used to think âwell yeah, heâs madâ but know I get that heâs pissed. When a Nort uses dark attacks, I get that heâs channeling his greed, his feelings of superiority. When Sora goes into Anti-form, I get that this is his moment of release, where he physically canât be his happy-go-lucky self. The black cloaks, which protect people when travelling in corridors of darkness, have the power to shield people from negative emotions. Does turning into a heartless feel like being overwhelmed with hopelessness and dread?
This also makes Rikuâs arc way more interesting to me! His âroad to dawnâ becomes a road to recovery!! Instead of pushing down his negativity, he lives with it! He uses it to his advantage without letting it overtake him!!! He doesnât pretend to be sunshine and rainbows, and his friends still love him!!!!
I donât really have a conclusion to this. Iâm just really glad that they did what they did with A Fragmentary Passage.
Fragile.
