đ đ New Years Eve Steddie please!
You got it! Here are the boys finally meeting!
Eddie rubs a tired hand over his forehead. âMy shiftâs over in literally five minutes. Would youâŚwould you feel comfortable enough to go to the diner next door with me? Iâve got some Advil in my employee locker. And I could get you a cheeseburger.â The guy goes completely quiet and still. He goes to try and shimmy around with the door, maybe get it off its hinges or something, make sure heâs not choking orâ But then he sniffles softly. âThat sounds really nice,â he says, âyouâre really nice. WhatâsâŚwhatâs your name?â âEddie, and yours?â âSteve,â he breathes. âSorry Iâm such a sack of crap. Wasting your time.â
Thank you for the ask!

âRight, yeah.â
âYou okay?â
âYeah, I justâIâve got the register. Gotta hand it in. Shit.â

âYouâre kinda bad at this.â
âHey, Iâm trying my⌠Okay, youâve gotta tell me if youâre dying.â
âJesus Christ. Mânot dying.â
âFamous last words.â
âUm. Water would be great, though.â
âSure! I can do that. If youâre gonna ralph, feel free to do it over my homework, itâll probably improve it.â
âGross.â
âHere.â
âThanks.â
âSo. Whyâre you even here, you lookââ
âIâve already had a week off. Thought Iâd be⌠never mind.â
âI know.â

âI know youâve been off for a week. It was⌠kinda hard not to notice.â
âYeah, so Iâve heard.â
âIt, um. It was Hargrove, then?â
âBack off, Munson.â
âHey, Iâm onlyââ
âIâm not giving anyone any more gossip material. Cafeteriaâs already a fucking nightmare.â
âOkay, Iâm sorry. I was onlyâI wasnât trying toââ
âYouâve not sold to Hargrove yet, have you?â
ââŚHavenât had the pleasure.â
âGood. Keep it that way.â
âI canât exactlyââ
âEddie, Iâm serious. Justâjust donât give him a reason, yâknow? Heâs dangerous.â
âFine, fine. Iâve got it.â
âLike, what happened to me is small-fry compared to what he couldâve⌠Just trust me.â

âThatâll do.â
âWoah, donât stand up so quick! Look, donât spread it around that Iâm still doing this, âcause I couldnât keep up with supply and demand last year, so. Anyway, I can whip up a doctorâs note? Get you another week off?â
âNo, thatâsâI donât need anotherââ
âJust, like, a couple days, then. Câmon, Harrington, this is a once in a lifetime deal.â
âFine. âŚThat was fast.â
âIâm nothing if not resourceful.â
âGod, this looks good.â
âIâm offended you doubted me.â
âI donât, I justââ
âHey, gimme the register. Haunting the office is my specialty.â
âYou donât have toâIâm gonna go there anywayââ
âSeriously, Harrington, just take a breather. And you better not be in school tomorrow, donât waste my handiwork.â
âI wonât. Hey, Eddie?â
âYeah?â
âThanks.â
âDonât mention it. Like, really, donât, or Iâll get overrun with forgery requests, and Iâll have to run away into the woods just to survive.â
âI wonât. âŚWeirdo.â
âHa, I heard that!â
âYou were meant to! âŚOh, hi, Mr Mundy, sorry, Iâveâyeah, I handed in the register. So, I forgot, Iâve got a doctorâs appointmentââ

Eddie: *to Robin and Steve* Who are these people you're gossiping about again?!
Robin: Oh, we don't actually gossip about real people.
Steve: Yeah, we learned that lesson the hard way.
Robin: So, now we make up people and their backgrounds. We gossip about them.
Eddie: I have been invested for over an hour over people who are NOT real?!
Steve and Robin: Yeah.
Eddie: *throwing up his hands* Either write a fucking book or join Hellfire!
Steve and Robin: *looks at each other before looking back at Eddie* Nah.
Eddie: *screams*
This is perfectly wholesome and I will read it so fucking many times more.
Request: wrong number au, Eddie texts Gareth something personal but puts in 1 wrong number & ends up texting Steve. The two of them hit it off & start chatting & then when they meet IRL they are completely head over heels in love & its cute as fuck
MY LOVE MY LOVE MY LOVE!!! LOVE A GOOD WRONG NUMBER AU!!! I can't believe I've never written it before now. I also had to actually include Gareth because I am actually obsessed with him lately, and I just think it's really neat that we can make these characters our own. This was such a fun and cute request! I didn't do the inappropriate route because I thought this was hilarious so sorry about that. I made up for it with something else! - Mickala â¤ď¸
----------------------------------------------------------
GARE BEAR! You wonât believe it but i dropped my phone in a sewer. Lost everything.
He had never been so happy about having his closest friendsâ numbers memorized. His phone was somewhere under the streets of Chicago, floating through dirty water and sewage, dying a slow and painful death.
He texted everyone else one at a time, let them know he had a new number and to completely delete the old one because it would never be recovered.
They were used to things like this happening; He lost his phone annually at this point and it was cheaper just to get a new number than transfer everything to a new one.
He went to dial Wayne, the old school part of him insisting on phone calls instead of texts still, when Garethâs name popped up with a new text.
Not sure who Gare Bear is, but sorry about your phone. Thatâs shitty.
Eddie let out a loud laugh.
did you mean to make a pun?
Did it make you laugh?
yes
Then yes.
Eddie sat down on a bench, entirely focused on his conversation with this stranger.
Did you find your Gare Bear yet?
Not yet but i think iâm pretty happy talking to you for now
Smooth, Eddie.
Admittedly, he was in a hell of a dry spell.
Going on almost two years, actually.
A little flirting with a stranger never hurt anybody, not when he clearly needed some practice.
Not sure if your Gare Bear would like it very much though
Wait, what?
Eddie stared at his phone, trying to comprehend what that could mean. Why would Gareth not want him talking to a stranger?
I hope you find your partner though!
Oh.
Oh!
Eddie hit the call button in the corner before he could even register what he was doing.
âHello?â
Oh no, he sounded hot.
âHi. So, Gareth is very much not my partner. He probably actually wishes I would really forget his number,â Eddie rushed out.
âUm. Okay?â
âHeâs been my best friend for ten years and he thinks Iâm a mess. Not a partner,â Eddie further clarified.
âGot it. Not a partner.â
âYes, exactly.â
They stayed silent for a moment before Eddie coughed.
âIâm Eddie, by the way.â
âSteve. Sorry about your phone, seriously that sucks,â he sounded genuinely apologetic, like he personally threw Eddieâs phone in the sewer.
âOh, no big deal. I lose my phone more often than I go out with someone,â Eddie said.
Why did he say that?
Steve let out a laugh and it was like music.
Eddie couldnât help the smile taking over his face at his laugh, already knew he wasnât gonna be able to let this guy go without learning more about him.
âSo youâre, what? Celibate?â Steve asked.
âFar from it. Well, maybe not far from it. Temporarily, maybe. Itâs been a while,â Eddie admitted.
âHow long?â Steve asked, a loud bang coming from his end of the phone. âSorry, I had to go outside for some privacy.â
Eddie wasnât going to read into that. He wasnât.
âTwo years give or take. I mean Iâm not counting shitty dates that ended before they got worse. So, yeah. Two years.â
âBeen a year for me, but. Yeah, I get it. My last relationship didnât end on the best terms. She decided I was too in love with her I guess,â Steve sighed, voice sounding pained.
She.
Steve was probably straight.
There was no way heâd be lucky enough for Steve to like men.
Or for Steve to like him.
âI canât really imagine breaking up with someone because they loved me too much. Iâm usually the one who falls too hard,â Eddie admitted.
âYeah, well, same here,â Steve sounded sad, a bit withdrawn.
Eddie wanted to hear him laugh again.
âI doubt either of us have ever fallen as hard as my phone did down a drain,â Eddie said sadly.
Steve let out a loud laugh and Eddie smiled.
âThis might sound crazy, but Iâm kind of glad your phone decided to live in the sewers,â Steve said when he finally calmed down. âAnd maybe a little too happy that you typed your friendâs number wrong.â
âOh really? Whyâs that?â
Was this flirting? Was he successfully having a flirtatious conversation with a potentially very hot guy?
âSo I can be bold and ask if you maybe wanted to meet up somewhere?â Steve asked hesitantly.
âSo youâre in Chicago?â Eddie asked.
âYeah. You?â
âFor the last five years, yeah.â
âYou busy tonight?â
Eddieâs heart stopped.
He was really going to meet up with a stranger just because he liked his laugh and hoped he was hot.
Heâd done more with less.
âYeah, actually. Iâm getting dinner with this guy I accidentally texted,â Eddie smirked, looking down at his feet.
âDinner? What a lucky guy. Where are you going?â Steve sounded amused.
âWell, it depends on what he likes. Iâve been craving some pierogies. Ever been to Staropolska?â Eddie asked.
Garethâs family owned it, and he used to eat there two or three times a week while they were in college, usually working off his bill in the kitchen doing dishes after.
He hadnât been in a couple months, work keeping him busy and his budget being pretty tight when he moved into a studio apartment by himself.
He had enough to treat himself tonight though.
âThe one on Milwaukee? Yeah. One of my favorite places to get devolay,â Steve sounded surprised that he knew it.
âYou wonât believe this, but the friend I was trying to text when I got you, his family owns that place.â
âNo way! Then we have to. We owe it to the guy who has almost my exact phone number,â Steve responded.
âMeet you there at seven?â Eddie asked, suddenly more nervous.
âSeven sounds good.â
âOkay.â
âOkay.â
Steve giggled. Eddie fell in love.
âWe should probably hang up.â
âShould we?â Eddie asked, not wanting to stop talking to him yet.
âYes, I have to do my hair. Gotta impress the guy who drops his phone in the sewer and texts strangers about it.â
âHe sounds like a loser. Donât put too much effort in,â Eddie sighed. âBut okay. See you at seven.â
âSee you then.â
They both stayed on the line for a minute.
âOkay. For real. Bye,â Steve laughed.
âBye, Stevie.â
He hung up before he could convince himself to talk to him for the rest of the afternoon.
He breathed out a loud sigh, smiling as he realized he had a date.
He dialed Garethâs real number immediately.
âGareth, I have a date!â
âWhat is this number, Eddie?â
âOh, I dropped my phone in the sewers. Not important. I have a date!â
âJesus Christ. Okay. Come over then.â
â-----------------------------------
Gareth had been his pre-date hype man since high school, though he wasnât very good at it.
Mostly he calmed Eddieâs nerves and helped make sure his hair didnât look like he just woke up, which was often its unfortunate state of being.
âSo, you donât know this guy,â Gareth said from his bed.
âNo.â
âAnd you talked for like two seconds and decided youâre in love with him,â he continued.
âYes.â
âAnd you think this is totally normal and sane?â
âI didnât say that. But we justâŚI dunno. We clicked. I havenât been that at ease with someone in a long time. It felt natural,â Eddie fell back on his bed, starfishing so his arm and leg hit Garethâs legs.
âDude, Iâm not discouraging it. Iâm happy for you. I just donât want you to be disappointed if it isnât as easy when you meet,â Gareth said softly.
âYeah, thanks. I think itâll be okay, though.â
âAlright. Tell babcia Iâm coming by tomorrow for lunch.â
Eddie sat up and gave Gareth a quick hug.
âThanks Gare Bear!â
â-------------------------------------------
He arrived 20 minutes early so he could sneak in the back to say hi to Garethâs grandmother, who still insisted on getting her hands on the food every day for a couple of hours despite being nearly 80 years old.
âBabcia!â
âEddie! My kochany! You forget to visit and I forget what you look like!â she rushed over, flour and oil stains all over her apron.
He should have kept some distance so his shirt didnât get ruined, but he ignored the part of his brain telling him to look perfect for his date so he could get a hug.
âYou know I have to watch my money,â he said against her shoulder.
âAnd you know I feed you for free if you clean up after yourself. No excuse,â she pulled away and looked him over. âYou look handsome. Why?â
Eddie put his hands on his hips.
âWhat? Donât I always look handsome?â
âOf course, but this is different. Your hair is smooth and you smell like the perfume store,â she smirked. âIs it a girl? Or a boy? Or a someone?â
âItâs a boy. Weâve never met in person, so I wanted to make a good first impression,â he admitted.
âOh! How lovely! Whatâs his name?â She was back to kneading dough, but kept her eyes on him.
âSteve. He actually has been here before, loves the devolay?â
Babcia froze.
âSteve? Oh goodness.â She turned to the sink and washed her hands, muttering under her breath about something.
Eddieâs heart sank. Babcia didnât seem happy about this.
âWhatâs wrong? You know him?â
âOh, yes.â
âIs he not a good guy? Has he been mean to you? Iâll call and cancel right now,â he insisted, reaching for his phone in his pocket.
âNo, no. Nothing like that. He is a very sweet boy. He got broken up with in this restaurant a few months back. Tore me to pieces. He just sat here for hours crying. I moved him to a corner booth for his privacy and he left me a $100 tip and ever since then when he comes in I make sure to give him as many szarlotka as he wants.â She touched Eddieâs shoulder. âYou be good to him. He has a nice heart.â
Eddieâs mind raced.
Why had Steve agreed to come here for a date if this is where heâd been broken up with? Why did he even bother coming back if it held such bad memories?
What if he didnât see this as a date?
The front door chimed and he heard the employee at the front welcome someone.
âHe will be good for you, drogi.â
Eddie nodded before making his way to the front, stopping in his tracks when he saw the most beautiful man heâd ever seen standing at the podium, talking to the employee with a smile.
âThatâs him,â Babcia said from behind him. âGo get him.â
She shoved him forward, nearly making him trip, which caught the attention of Steve.
He looked over with a curious smile, and then realization seemed to hit him.
âSteve?â Eddie managed to ask, loud enough to be heard over the few full tables in the restaurant.
âEddie?â he asked back, hesitantly moving towards him.
âI, um,â Eddie started, then cleared his throat. âI usually sit by the window, if thatâs okay?â
âThatâs perfect,â Steve nodded.
It was cliche, like the room around them closed into just them existing together, like the stars had aligned exactly right for this moment to happen.
They sat down at the table Eddie usually sat at, staring across the table at each other in slight awe.
Eddie really hoped that Steve was having the same feelings he was.
But one thing was stopping Eddie from being completely enraptured.
âIs this a date?â he asked suddenly.
âWhat?â Steve seemed surprised by his question. âI mean, yeah. Iâd like it to be. I thought it was.â
Eddie nodded once, but remained quiet, thinking.
âOh God, it wasnât, was it? You were just being nice. What is it with this restaurant? If I didnât love the food so much or babcia, I would never step foot here again, I swear-â
Eddie put his hand on Steveâs to calm him down, frown on his face.
âWoah. What?â
âI just. I donât have the best history with dates here and I guess I didnât learn the first time something bad happened, and now Iâm being too much too fast again in this place and-â
Eddie pulled Steveâs hand up to his face, placing a soft kiss to his knuckles.
âStevie, calm down. This is a date. Iâll have as many dates here as you want to to get rid of whatever negative stuff you associate with this place. Babcia would hate that I ruined this place for you,â he said quietly.
Steve seemed to relax at his words.
And if you wanna tell me about what happened, you can. If itâll help,â Eddie offered.
Before Steve could reply, Garethâs cousin, Ben, came to take their order.
It was a quick order, both knowing exactly what they wanted, and then Steve looked back at him.
âItâs just. My last girlfriend, who I was with for almost three years, dumped me here. It was kind of out of the blue for me, and I had a really hard time that night.â
Eddie felt his heart break.
How could someone do that to Steve? He didnât need to know him better to know that he didnât deserve that, especially not if babcia had taken him under her wing so quickly.
âShe must be awful to have let you go like that,â Eddie squeezed Steveâs hand in his, resisting the urge to go to his side of the table and hold him.
Steve shrugged and looked down at their hands.
âI mean, I should have known. She was never much for romance or spending time together that didnât involve work or school. I was looking at engagement rings and she was looking at apartments to get away from me. I was justâŚreally blinded by what I thought was love,â Steve smiled sadly at him.
âIt wasnât?â
âWell, it may have been a type of love. It was more comfort than anything. She was kind of all I had for the first year we were together, and I think I just ignored how unhealthy that was for both of us. And then I met Robin in college, and she was like the opposite of Nancy in every way. A few months before Nancy broke up with me, I told her that Robinâs parents kicked her out when she came out to them and that she needed a place to stay until we graduated. She agreed, then never made any attempt at getting to know her. And I didnât read into it, Nancy isnât like, super talkative with people she isnât already close with, and Robin just kinda stayed to herself when Nancy was home.â Steve took a shaky breath. âBut it turns out she didnât bother getting to know her because she already knew she was gonna break up with me and leave the apartment to me and Robin, so.she just. Didnât bother. Robin warned me, but I didnât listen.â
Eddie wanted to cry.
Steveâs voice was full of pain, but not in a way that told him he still loved her, or still hoped they would get back together. More that she broke a part of him that he still hadnât been able to fix no matter how hard he tried or wanted to.
âWas she jealous?â Eddie asked, trying so hard to understand what could have happened.
âI dunno. I mean, Robinâs a lesbian, and I definitely never had feelings for her anyway. Nancy was always so sure of herself, I canât imagine sheâd be jealous.â
âIt sounds like she didnât appreciate you very much.â
âWhat do you mean?â Steve didnât sound mad, just curious.
âWell, she didnât even make an effort to get to know your best friend, right? And it sounds like she was too busy focusing on her future to even think about what you looked like in it, and instead of trying to plan it with you, she made a future for her. She sounds a bit selfish,â Eddie shrugged.
Instead of being upset, Steve laughed.
God, Eddie loved that laugh.
âSorry, itâs just that you sound exactly like Robin. Youâd probably be two peas in a pod.â
âTell me about her,â Eddie genuinely wanted to know more about the person who kept Steve going.
Their food arrived in the middle of the story of how Steve and Robin met, but it didnât stop him from continuing.
Eddie listened with a fond smile, filling in Steveâs gaps of silence as he chewed a bite of food with questions or something related to what heâd been talking about.
It was easy.
It was fun.
Halfway through the meal, Steveâs foot rested against one of his and it felt like electricity shooting through his bones.
Eddie told him about Gareth, and his family who had pretty much adopted him when they both moved here from a small town in Indiana. He talked about his uncle who raised him for most of his life, who visited every Christmas despite being on a really tight budget.
Time passed quickly, but not at all.
They hadnât realized how long theyâd been sitting there until babcia came out without her apron to hand deliver an apple tart.
âYou boys enjoy. Iâll see you both soon!â she said as she smacked a kiss on top of each of their heads.
Both of them blushed, but tried to cover it up with a bite of food.
As they finished, Steve looked outside to see how dark it was, how few people were left walking the streets.
âGuess we should head out,â he muttered, sounding like that was the last thing he wanted to do.
âWould you wanna come to my place? We donât have to do anything except talk, I promise. I just donât really want this to end yet,â Eddie suggested.
âReally? I havenât bored you?â Steve asked, just a hint of self-deprecation in his tone.
Eddie shook his head.
âNot at all. Iâd really like to get a chance to love you the way you deserve,â Eddie said.
Steveâs eyes widened.
Eddie should back up, should say something less intense.
But if this ruined it, then at least he said what he was thinking.
âYou think you could love me?â Steve asked, barely more than a whisper.
âI think I already do a little,â Eddie admitted.
Steve blinked at him for a moment, mouth slightly agape.
âI need to kiss you,â he finally said.
âNow? Here?â Eddie smiled.
âNow. Here.â
âI wonât stop you.â
Steve stood from the table and stood in front of Eddie, placing both hands on his cheeks and leaning down.
Their lips brushed in a barely-there kiss, softer than Eddie expected.
Steve stayed there for a moment, eyes closed, and Eddie couldnât help the words tumbling from him.
âYouâre the most beautiful person Iâve ever seen.â
If someone had said it to him, he would think they were just trying to get him into their bed, but that wasnât the case here and he hoped Steve knew that.
âPeople used to call me a charmer, but I donât think Iâm half as good at it as you,â Steve whispered, his breath ghosting against Eddieâs lips.
âJust honest.â
âTake me home,â Steve said, opening his eyes and staring at Eddie, his eyes glowing with something close to love.
â-------------------------------------
They stayed up all night, never doing more than kissing and mapping out patterns on each othersâ skin.
They talked about everything, even the painful parts of life, even the parts that they hadnât shared with anyone else.
It didnât make any sense that someone who had been a stranger not even 24 hours ago could already mean so much.
When the sun started to shine through the curtains of Eddieâs apartment, Steve sighed and buried his face in Eddieâs neck.
âI have to go to work,â though he burrowed his entire body further into the bed and Eddieâs side.
âYou could call in sick,â Eddie suggested, pressing a kiss to the top of Steveâs head.
âRobin would kill me.â
He and Robin worked together as team teachers at an elementary school. When one of them missed, it left the other with 34 kids alone.
Plus, Steve loved his job, worked hard to be a teacher, and hated missing a day if he didnât need to.
âMaybe you could bring Robin here after work? I can make dinner?â Eddieâs job was pretty easy, marketing for an Indie record label based out of New York remotely really kept him busy for a couple hours a day and the rest of the time was spent writing his own music.
Steve sat up and looked down at him, his hair ruffled from Eddie running his fingers through it for the last eight hours.
âYouâd wanna meet Robin?â
âYeah, if you want me to. She sounds like fun.â
Steve started crying.
âOh shit, Iâm sorry! I didnât mean to make you cry. Good job, Munson, already ruined something good,â Eddie was reaching for a tissue from his bedside table.
âNo, no, Iâm sorry. Iâm just tired and emotional. And just. It means a lot that youâd wanna meet her,â Steve said between gasps for air as he continued to cry.
âOf course I do. I could even invite Gareth over, too, if you want. He wonât believe that our date went well,â Eddie joked, brushing the tears away from Steveâs cheeks.
âIâd love to meet him,â Steve said, sniffling.
âWhen can you guys get here?â
âUsually weâre done by four, but sometimes we stay later to finish grading stuff. Maybe we should say six?â
âGot it. Any allergies?â
âRobin is allergic to shellfish. She says she is. I think she just doesnât like them,â Steve rolled his eyes.
âNo shellfish, got it. Any preferences, my love?â
Steve blushed at the term of endearment, looking down before he leaned in to kiss Eddie softly.
âAnything you make will be great.â
âYou wanna borrow some clothes for work?â Eddie asked.
âDo you have any business casual stuff?â
Eddie gagged.
âUnfortunately, itâs required for the job sometimes. Far left of the closet should have something,â he nodded towards the small closet by the bathroom.
Eddie watched as Steve walked over and picked out his only pair of khaki pants and a navy button down. Steve looked back at him and winked before he nodded towards the bathroom.
âCould use some help working the shower if youâre willing to,â he smirked.
Eddie jumped up from the bed and ran into the bathroom, ignoring the way Steve was laughing.
âThe hot water is tricky sometimes. I should probably get in there too to make sure it stays hot,â Eddie said as he stripped off his pants.
âDefinitely. Wouldnât want me to get cold,â Steve put a hand on his shoulder to slow him down. âKiss me?â
Eddie leaned in to kiss him slowly, letting his tongue brush along his lips just to get a taste.
âOkay?â Eddie checked in.
âYeah. You remember what you said last night? About loving me like I deserve?â
Eddie nodded.
âI want you to. And I want to love you back.â
âI think we can arrange that.â

Chapter 7<<Masterlist>>Chapter 9
Tommy comes home around lunch time and Steveâs plan is set into motion. He packed what he knows heâll need into two suitcases, and tucked all of Eddieâs letters into his needlepoint bag underneath his supplies. Heâs not exactly sure how heâll be able to get out of the estate, but he needs to be ready at a momentâs notice.
The medical report and marriage contract are folded and held close in his pocket. When he hears Tommy come in, he puts on his best performance and staggers down the stairs holding his belly.
âTommy?â His voice warbles and he pats himself on the back for sounding so genuinely distressed. âI thinkâŚI think something may be wrong.â
Tommy meets him at the bottom of the stairs with a look of concern. âSteve? Darling you look awful.â
He tries not to take offense. He knows his performance isnât that good, but heâs also aware that he hasnât been eating enough, and hasnât left the estate for so much as a hair cut since fall. âI needâŚI need to see that doctor. The one who came here before. I donât feel well and Iâm worried about the pup.â
Thatâs all he needed to say. Tommyâs only real concerns are his investments, and the most important one he has is currently doing somersaults in Steveâs belly. Without any hesitation, Tommy calls back the driver and they make their way into town to see Dr. Owens. When they arrive at his office, Tommy tries to enter the exam room. Steve gives one look of warning to the doctor, and Tommy is being escorted to the waiting area.
The door closes and Dr. Owens is immediately at Steveâs side. âI wish you would have come sooner, Steve. You donât look well.â
âThatâs the least of my concern. Dr. Owens, pleaseâŚI need your help and I donât know who else to turn to.â
The doctor seats him at the exam table and pulls up a chair. âYouâre safe here, Steve. Anything you tell me will remain confidential.â
âIâm actually hoping it wonât.â He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the papers. âTommy has been lying to me. To everyone. Here, this is our marriage contract. It states right there that our marriage will be dissolved if there is any proof of adultery or if either of us are infertile. Sir, itâs not just Tommyâs legs that were affected by his wounds. He canât father children. This signed medical report proves it. I didnât know until today that this clause was in our contract. Since he returned from the war, heâs known that our marriage can be dissolved, and he hid it from me to keep his control over me.
âWhatâs worse is he ordered me to find another Alpha to pup me so he can claim it as his heir and bond me to him. I couldnât imagine doing such a thing. But thenâŚthen I met a man who showed me what actual kindness and love is. Tommy found out. He didnât want me being happy. Didnât want this man getting in his way. So he threatened him and forced him to leave. Thatâs when I found out I was pregnant. The day you came to the manorâŚhe told me that once the pup is born, a man he hired to follow me, William Hargrove, would be rewarded for his efforts byâŚby having his rights to pup me against my will. It terrified me so much that I fainted. Â
âDoctor, please. I need to get away from them. The proof of his infertility is right there, and the proof of my adultery is here.â Steve places a hand on his belly and wipes the tears from his face with the other. âCan you help me? Please? I know I made mistakes of my own, but I cannot allow him to claim this pup as his.â
Dr. Owens sits in stunned silence for a moment and his own eyes look misty. âIâm glad you came to me. Steve, this is the most abhorrent thing Iâve ever heard, and Iâm so sorry youâve been treated this way. After you leave here, I can take these papers to the courthouse. The judge, Bob Newby, is a good friend of mine and a good man. Thereâs no way heâll let this stand.â
Judge Newby. Steve remembers him from one of the parties Tommy hosted. He was so kind and Steve was sad to see that he was one of the Alphas that Tommy refused to have back. All because he made Steve laugh and gave him a moment of joy. âI met him once. He was kind.â
The doctor nods in agreement and gives Steve a reassuring smile. âHe is, I promise you that. I can get this to him immediately and once the papers are signed dissolving your marriage, your ties to Tommy are broken. Do you have a means to leave?â
Steveâs shoulders sag. âNo. I donât have a way to leave the estate and no money for travels. The only thing of value I have is my wedding band. I suppose I could sell that and get money for a train ticket.â
âSteve, do you trust me?â
âOf course I do.â
Dr. Owens holds out his hand. âThen give me your ring. Iâll take it to the jeweler and get the best price I can. And as far as getting off the estate, leave that to me. Iâll get your funds for a ticket and the papers you need. Just pack what you can and be ready before dusk.â
Steve heaves a sigh of relief. âOh my god, I canât thank you enough.â He slides off his ring and places it in the doctorâs hand. âYouâre saving my life. I donât know how I can ever repay you.â
Owens pockets the ring and stands. âYou can repay me by letting me examine you. I take it you havenât been caring for yourself for quite some time.â
Steve readily accepts. He's dehydrated and underweight, but the baby seems to be growing just fine regardless. The doctor stresses that he needs to do his best to eat regular meals once he's off the estate and get as much rest as he can. Before he leaves, Dr. Owens gives him a wink and wishes him the best of luck. He walks Steve out the waiting room where Tommy is looking irritated.Â
âWell? Is the pup ok?â
âYes, Mr. Hagan. Steve is just a bit underweight, but that can be remedied easily. Heâs experienced some fatigue, and will need plenty of bed rest. But otherwise the baby seems to be doing just fine.â
Tommy huffs, like this whole thing was a hardship for him. âGood then. Weâll be on our way. Steven, come along now.â
Tommy is furious on the drive back to the estate and tells Steve several times that this was all his own doing. That refusing to eat with Tommy led him here, and he only has himself to blame. His tone would normally make Steve prickle with irritation, but he lets it roll off his back knowing that this is likely the last time heâll have to hear it.Â
When they arrive back at the manor, Tommy retreats to the study and Steve goes up to his room to make sure he has everything he needs. He places his bags by the doorâŚand waits.
The sun is just starting to set behind the trees when he hears a loud knock. His heart leaps in his chest and he springs to his feet. He slings his bag over his shoulder, opens his door, and picks up his suitcases. Itâs a bit of a struggle getting them down the stairs, but he manages. He makes it to the foyer and Deputy Callahan is handing Tommy a piece of paper.
âWhat is this?â
âMr. Hagan, this is your notice signed by Judge Newby that as of today your marriage to Steve Hagan is dissolved on grounds of adultery and infertility.â
Tommyâs glare is full of rage as he turns to look at Steve. His face is red and jaw clenched. âWhat have you done? You have no proof of this!â
âYou had proof of it this whole time, Tommy. I found the papers. Your medical report, our marriage contractâŚyou never told me about the clauses in there. You knew this whole time that you could have called this off and you didnât. You made me a prisoner in our own home, and I refuse to let it happen any longer.â
His face has darkened even more with rage and Steve would be afraid if he didnât know he would be leaving soon. âYou had no right to go through my belongings.â
âAnd you had no right to keep me here! To bring me here in the first place! You donât own me anymore, Tommy.â Steve picks up his suitcases and Deputy Callahan is quick to take them out of his hands. He makes his way out the door and Steve follows, stopping in the threshold and turning to look at Tommy one last time. âYou only have yourself to blame.â
He closes the door behind him and holds his head high as he walks to the police car and the deputy helps him into the passenger seat. As they drive out of the estate and head towards town, Steve feels the weight of the world lift off his shoulders. For the first time in his life, heâs free.
Theyâre just outside of town when Deputy Callahan reaches into his pocket and pulls out an envelope. âThe Doc and the Judge wanted to make sure I got this to you. Itâs a copy of the papers they signed, and a little something to help get you where you need to go.â
Steve opens the envelope and is shocked at the amount of money he finds. Itâs much more than what he expected to get for his ring. He sees a small notecard between the bills and pulls it out.
Steve,
I was able to get a good price for your ring, but it will only get you so far. Bob and I had a bit of money to spare and thought there would be no better use for it than to get you to your Alpha. Love is priceless, kid. Go find yours, grab it with both hands, and donât let go.
We wish you the best of luck on your travels. Be safe, eat well, and enjoy your new life.
Warm regards,
Sam Owens
âSo? Where am I taking you?â Deputy Callahan looks over at him with a knowing smile.Â
Steve wipes a tear off his cheek and smiles back. âThe train station would be lovely, thank you. I need to get to Indiana.â
He spends four days traveling by train across the country.Â
When the conductor sees him coming, lugging two suitcases, alone, with a swollen belly, he runs to assist Steve and makes sure he has a compartment to himself so he can stretch out as much as he needs.
His appetite finally returns and he makes sure to eat every bite of the meals offered. Sleep comes more easily too, without the fear of Tommy and Billy hanging over him. The seats arenât exactly ideal for a pregnant person to sleep on, but he makes do and is just grateful to not be at the manor.
Steve whiles away the hours reading and rereading every letter Eddie wrote him. He was adrift for a while after Billy escorted him off the estate at gunpoint. He finally tracked down his uncle and worked his way out to Indiana. His uncle owns a wheat farm in a small town with a large farmhouse. Thereâs a stream nearby, and following it south is a cabin Eddie has taken residence in.Â
Heâs been working for Uncle Wayne on the farm and has taken on the care of a whole flock of chickens. He insists Steve will love them even more than the pheasants.Â
Most of his letters are about how much he loves Steve. How he misses him and wants more than anything to see him again. How he hopes Steve is safe.Â
As the train pulls into the station in Indianapolis, his heart races at the thought of being so much closer to Eddie. Once heâs off the train and has his suitcases, he realizes he needs to find his way to the town Eddie lives in. He approaches the ticket booth and asks if they know the best way to get there.
Thereâs a tap on his shoulder and he turns to see a young man who must be around his age with a younger boy no older than fourteen. âI didnât mean to overhear, but did you say you were looking for a way to Hawkins?â
âYes, I did. Do you know the area?â
He gives Steve a small smile and looks to the boy. âThatâs where weâre headed, actually. Weâd be happy to take you.â
Steve is so grateful for small miracles. âThat would be wonderful, thank you so much! Iâm Steve.â
He holds out his hand and the young man shakes it. âIâm Jonathan. This is my brother, Will. May we take your bags?â
âOh, itâs no trouble. Iâm sure I can manage.â
âI insist! Our mother is a midwife and she would have our heads if we let someone in your condition carry luggage.â
Steve laughs genuinely for the first time since he was with Eddie. âWe canât have that! Thank you Jonathan, I canât tell you how much I appreciate your help.â
Jonathan and Will help him into their car and load his luggage into the back. He learns that Jonathan is also an Omega, and he was at the station seeing his Alpha off for a semester of school in Chicago. Nancy is studying to be a journalist and Jonathan just beams talking about her. He works with his mother assisting in births, and does odd jobs around town, but is fascinated by photography and is learning about how it all works.
Steve himself is fascinated by this other male Omega who is living his life so...normally. It's such an unfamiliar concept for him, and his heart aches at the thought of the possibilities he could have had if he weren't born into such wealthy circles.
Will is a quiet and sweet boy. He loves drawing and spends a lot of his free time either working on sketches or causing mischief with his friends. Thereâs a whole gaggle of them from what Steve gathers.
He doesnât want to tell the boys too much of the life he escaped, so he keeps his story vague. He tells them that heâs been separated from his Alpha due to circumstances out of his control, and is finally finding his way back to him. With Hawkins being a small town, it should be no surprise that Jonathan knows where the Munson farm is. He buys their eggs from Wayne weekly.Â
When they eventually arrive at the farm, the boys carry Steveâs luggage to the front porch and wish him well. Heâs sure heâll be seeing them again soon enough. They drive off and Steve takes a deep breath before knocking on the door. His heart sinks when thereâs no answer. He knocks again and waits. When no one comes to greet him, he thinks back to Eddieâs letters and the cabin he mentioned.
Steve picks up his suitcases and quickly finds the stream nearby. He follows it south, moving slowly with all the extra weight heâs carrying, until he happens upon a quaint log cabin thatâs just as Eddie described. On the porch he sees pots of sprouts, and small wood signs with Eddieâs handwriting. Lavender. Rosemary. Sage.Â
He sets down his bags and knocks. Again, thereâs no answer. But when he tries to open the door, he finds it unlocked. As soon as it swings open, heâs hit with the fragrance of cedar and suede. His heart races and the pup begins to kick wildly. Steve looks down smiling and runs a hand over his belly. âThatâs right, little one. Thatâs your father.â
Steve brings his bags inside and sets them down. The cabin is set up much like the cottage on the estate. Thereâs a small kitchen and dining area, a living space with a fireplace, and as he walks further through, he finds a washroom and bedroom. The scent of Eddie is stronger there and it draws Steve in like a moth to a flame. Above the bed, he sees his lilac embroidery.
Weary from days of travel and months of misery, Steve climbs into the bed and pulls the covers up to his chin. The cabin is chilly without the fireplace lit, but he quickly finds warmth under the blankets. Surrounded in the scent of his Alpha, and feeling more safe than he has in a long time, he drifts into a peaceful sleep.

One thing that has made me a much more well-adjusted person is a clip I once saw of Hank Green saying that anyone can be in amazing shape as long as being in amazing shape is one of their top three priorities.
(This is obviously a generalization that isn't true for everyone. But it is true for most people and I'm proceeding from there.)
This "top three priorities" framing has genuinely reduced my tendency toward jealousy and self-comparison a lot. Now when I feel envious of someoneâs spotless, aesthetic home, I think to myself, âHaving a spotless, aesthetic home is probably one of their top three priorities. Itâs definitely not one of mine, so I shouldnât expect my home to look like that.â
Or when I see an influencer with a body that takes a ton of work to maintain: âMaintaining that body is obviously one of her top three priorities, because itâs her livelihood. My livelihood is my brain, so Iâm never going to prioritize my body like that.â
It also helps me to identify areas that I actually DO want to prioritize more. I realized in recent years that my envy for my friends who prioritized writing more than I did was NOT going away, so I started to prioritize writing more. (Not top three, but higher priority than it has been in the past.)
Is there a fic out there when after season 4 Steve doesn't trust/react well to Joyce and Hopper? I just think that him being the oldest and real adult left in Hawkins to deal with and protect the kids would mess him up a bit.
Like, I understand Joyce left because she wanted to protect her blood children and El, but none of the other parents are read in on the situation. She left the rest of the kids after another super traumatic experience where multiple people they knew and cared about died and only Steve, Nancy, and Robin could support them. Not to knock Nancy and Robin, but the show doesn't show them supporting the kids the way Steve does, so it all ended up on his shoulders.
Add in the fact Joyce up and abandons her kids when she learns about Hopper being alive, and then even more terrible things happen, and I feel like Steve would not trust the adults anymore and truly resist ans get upset when they try to parent him or take care of *his* kids.
So I'd anyone has fic recs or wants to write one... let me know...
