Summary: In an AU where Grim is at the Jedi Temple when Order 66 takes place Obi-Wan learns the truth about both of his Padawans.
“It’s too dangerous for you to fight Grievous, little one. Besides, you will be safer at the Temple.”
“Master, I’ve fought Darth Sidious three times now, I can handle General Grievous.”
“And have you ever won any of these fights? You’ll be much safer here, I promise.”
“Let me go with you, please.”
“I’ll be back soon enough.”
That had been Obi-Wan’s last conversation with Grim.
Fear settled into the pit of his stomach. Everything had gone wrong in the hours since then, and the Jedi have been betrayed by the clones. Senator Organa had told him that this ambush had happened everywhere. Did that include-?
“How many other Jedi have managed to survive?” Obi-Wan asked. He thought of his Padawans.
Anakin had been with Grim. Maybe he had gotten her to safety.
“Heard from no one have we,” Yoda told him.
“I saw thousands of troops attack the Jedi Temple,” Senator Organa said. “That’s why I went looking for Yoda.”
“Have we had any contact from the Temple?” He asked.
“Received a coded retreat message we have.”
“It requests all Jedi return to the Temple. It says the war is over.”
A trap. “Well, then we must go back. If there are any stragglers they will fall into the trap and be killed.”
“Hmm. Suggest dismantling the coded signal, do you?”
“Yes, Master. There is too much at stake.”
“I agree. And a little more knowledge might light our way.”
Knowledge that Grim could have shared with them, he just hoped she was okay. He knew she was strong, but anyone could have been taken by surprise by this attack. Of course- she wasn’t just anyone, maybe she warned the others at the Temple. Maybe she was able to escape in time.
Returning to the Temple Obi-Wan wasn’t sure what he had expected. The dead bodies of clones and Jedi alike littered the floor of his home. Yet nothing could have prepared him for what he found. Grim was laying on the ground, motionless. He gasped and ran over to her, dropping to his knees. “Grim…”
He thought she would be safe.
He promised she would be safe.
He looked at her with tears shimmering in his eyes. His daughter was dead.
Her lightsaber had rolled out of her hand. Laying right beside her. Showing that she had not gone down without a fight - and he would have expected nothing less from her. With her many injuries it looked as though she had been fighting for as long as she could afford to stand.
Yet he saw no trace of blaster wounds.
Her right hand covered her stomach, and he had a sickening feeling that was where the fatal wound was. “There’s no blaster injuries,” he said to Yoda, who was right next to him.
“No,” he agreed.
Almost afraid of what he would find, Obi-Wan moved her hand, he had to know the truth about how she had died. And he gasped. “A lightsaber.” Tears filled his eyes. “Who? Who could have done this?”
Yoda noticed something in Grim’s hand. It was a holo-recorder. “Knew this would happen, Grim did,” he said.
Of course she did. She had known all of this would happen, but had stayed quiet. Why hadn’t she told them?
“A message, she left,” Yoda told him.
Obi-Wan looked away from Grim and saw what Yoda had. He watched as he played her last message.
A hologram of Grim flickered to life. Uninjured, but afraid. “Master Yoda, Master Kenobi, if you’re seeing this message then I am dead,” she started off. Blasterfire could be heard in the background along with screams- she frantically turned to look behind her. She took a deep breath. Obi-Wan heard her whisper: “I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me,” before she addressed the Jedi Masters again.
“You came back to the Temple to leave a warning for the survivors, and you hoped to learn what has happened. I shall tell you, I should have told you this years ago and I am very sorry that I didn’t. Anakin has betrayed the Jedi, he has fallen to the dark side. He is a SIth now. Darth Vader. He is attacking the Temple with the 501st as I speak. I will confront him soon in hopes to hold him off, I know I can’t save everyone, but if this can give anyone a chance to escape and survive I will take it. Even if I won’t. And if you’re seeing this I didn’t. But I will be okay with that. I died to save people. The Chancellor has been behind all of this from the start. He is Darth Sidious. He is declaring the Republic as an Empire as you hear this message.
“Anakin will not be on Coruscant when you see this. He is on Mustafar. That is where you will find him, and I hope telling you this information will save Padmé.” She took a shuddering breath. “The clones are getting closer, I don’t have much time left. Masters, I am sorry, for everything. I am so glad you let me be a part of this family, being a Jedi was the best thing to ever happen to me. And Obi-Wan, I know this news hurts you the most. You have lost both of your Padawans in one day, but don’t give up hope, I beg you. You have always been my hope when I had none. In time a new hope will emerge, I can promise you this because I have seen it before. This story is only the prequel, and the next has a happy ending, I promise you. The Jedi will survive.
May the Force be with you, always.”
The hologram flickered out. Obi-Wan could only stare at it blankly. Tears were filling his vision again and this time he did not stop them. Anakin was the one who had done this? He could hardly believe what she had said, but he knew it was true. Grim would not have lied about any of this.
She knew she wasn’t going to survive. She had sacrificed herself to save people. He hoped that she had. He hoped her sacrifice wasn’t for nothing -
No. It was worth something. She had given them the information about where Anakin was - and apparently this information would save Padmé. How? He did not know. Grim would have.
Yoda looked at him. “One with the Force, Grim now is,” he told him. Obi-Wan did not need that reminder. “Record your message now, you should. Then stop the Sith, we must.”
Obi-Wan nodded. Yoda was right. He did not have time to mourn his daughter right now, and she had given her life in the hopes it would save others. A true Jedi in the end.

Obi-Wan, staring, wished that he had the strength to rip his eyes out of his head.
But even blind, he would see this forever.
