Haven't mentioned that Mutant Mashup AU in a while, might as well bring something up that I've been stewing over for ever since I saw this YouTube video by skulltrot.
It's a really good analysis on Leo and why he does the things he does in the movie. It even explains a few minor details you might've missed during a first watch, as well as a few other details that are mentioned in the series.
After watching this video I've seen Rise Leo not as an overconfident teen whose goofy for personal amusement, but an insecure kid who covers up that fact by telling jokes.
I'll explain more on Blue's character in the Au under the cut so you don't have to read it if you don't want to, but just as a reminder.
2012 gang's nicknames are:
Leo = DaVinci
Raph = Sanzio
Donnie = Niccolo
Mikey = Simoni
Splinter = Yoshi
April = May
Casey has the same name.
Rise fam's nicknames are:
Raph = Red
Donnie = Purple
Leo = Blue
Mikey = Orange
Splinter = Lou
Casey = Cass
April has the same name.
Now for Blue's character. I'm gonna focus on his insecurities here, as well as a bringing up his relationship with his brothers and cousins.
In the Au, Blue lives with his brothers and lives a few tunnels away from his cousins so there's plenty of interaction between them all. However, that also means that Blue picks up on his family's talents quickly and feels very insecure by the time the Au begins. Similar to canon, Blue doesn't tell anyone about his insecurities, using jokes to hide what's going on beneath the surface. It's hard for Blue to be vulnerable, even in front of his family. This was partially influenced by this father and uncle's relationship with each other, as well as how they treat Blue himself.
Yoshi and Lou absolutely care for Blue and don't want to see him hurt, it's just that they have so many other turtles to look after that sometimes Blue gets overlooked. He's not the only one either, Purple, Sanzio, Niccolo, even Simoni get overlooked from time to time. It also doesn't help that Blue's father has a habit of ignoring his issues through TV and other distractions. That meant Blue didn't get as much emotional availability from Lou as he should've growing up. Leading to Blue's lack of communication with his father, it just feels awkward at this point because Blue doesn't know if his dad will take his issues seriously.
Yoshi was a little different as he saw Blue growing up to be just like Lou and was worried Blue would turn out that way. That's why despite both sharing a similar sense of humor and getting along well, Yoshi was harder on Blue than the rest of his nephews. That led to Blue feeling like his insecurities were a weakness he needed to fix and feeling uncomfortable bringing them up to Yoshi.
Blue also doesn't like to bring his insecurities up to his brothers.
Blue noticed Red taking care of the family alongside DaVinci when their Dad and Uncle would fight. He understood, even at a young age, that something was wrong and that Red and DaVinci were stressed out over it. That's partly why Blue doesn't want to tell Red about his issues. He feels like Red already has enough on his plate and doesn't want to add more or feel like another burden his older brother needs to shoulder. Red and Blue do still tease and prank each other, as siblings do, but when it comes to internal issues that need to be addressed, Blue hesitates.
Purple is a different story because emotions are hard for him to get right. He tries, but Blue doesn't want to make his twin feel awkward or uncomfortable if he can help it. Even if Purple can understand being overlooked sometimes by the adults in their life, Blue doesn't feel the need to explain if it means an awkward infodump.
Orange is the closest to understanding Blue but isn't fully aware of the extent of his older bros issues. Blue is fully aware of Orange wanting to help and Dr. Delicate Touch his way into solving the problem, but Blue doesn't like how pushy Orange can be. Orange has a lot of energy with a passion comparable to his cousin Sanzio, but that eagerness to help isn't what Blue wants. Especially when he wants to protect Orange and not burden him with his issues, similar to Red.
The absolute last person Blue would explain his issues to is DaVinci. While Blue looks up to his oldest cousin, he feels inferior in many ways. DaVinci is strong, confident, efficient in battle and projects and air of safety that everyone can feel just by being around him. Blue wants to be like that but feels like he can't, that he's too weak to ever achieve that level of strength. DaVinci is pretty much the object of Blue's insecurities. That's not to say they aren't close, they both love Space Heroes and spa days. They care for each other, it's just that Blue can't help but compare himself to his cousin and other family members.
Sanzio is in a weird place though. While he would absolutely relate to Blue's struggles and maybe even offer some really good advice, Blue just doesn't explain to Zio. Blue is fully aware that Purple and Zio have an agreement between them, not the specifics just that there IS an agreement, and doesn't want to mess up with what they've got going on. Eventually, Blue will learn to lean on Zio after a talk with both him and Purple.
Simoni is similar to Orange in that Blue doesn't want to bog Simon down with his issues. Simon is fully aware that Blue's got some stuff to work out and is super go with the flow about it. He's not gonna pressure Blue into explaining something he's not ready to talk about and is totally cool with providing distractions. Blue appreciates that and spends the most time with Simoni because of it. Blue likes to divert his attention whenever his self criticism, or boredom, become too much.
The only person Blue willingly explains his issues to at the beginning is his cousin Niccolo, even the ugly parts.
Nico is calm, gentle, willing to listen and not give any feedback unless asked for it. Blue doesn't want others to find the solutions for him, he wants to find them on his own. He knows his brothers mean well, but Blue feels weak when he finally gets vulnerable in their presence. Blue wants to feel in control of his issues and Nico understands that. To others, Nico's silent presence might feel like detachment, but he's always listening and that's what Blue wants.
The Hamato's hooman friends are in a funky middle.
The Jones' definitely aren't the ones Blue would go to for insecurity assistance. Him and Cass aren't close enough for Blue to ask her for help, plus I think he'd view her as friend by association. She's a little intense like Orange so that doesn't help her case. Casey may be good at keeping a secret, but that doesn't mean that he's good at keeping a secret from his friends. Blue likes his secrets kept as such. Casey Junior lands in that same boat where Blue doesn't want to burden him anymore than he already is. I mean, kid lost everything and is considered the lone survivor of a doomed future. Maybe Blue might ask if his older self had any self care tips but just very subtly.
The O'Neil's try to get him to open up in their own ways. Blue doesn't go to Kirby or Carol unfortunately because he had a hard time leaning on adults growing up. April definitely encourages him to talk to DaVinci about his issues mean while May asks him to talk to Red. Both do their best but Blue is stubborn and stagnates a lot of the time.
The Amazing Digital Circus finally got to me....
With that said, allow me to introduce you to the circus's very own...
Animal Tamer!!
Abel!
Aka, my own personal take on the speculation surrounding C&A.
There's biblical imagery in TADC if you look for it, especially when it comes to our beloved Ringmaster himself, Caine, who's believed to be named after the first murderer in the bible. That paired with the C&A logo that briefly shows up has led people to believe that Caine had a brother named Abel.
This is just what I think Abel would look like if he does show up in the future or at all. I imagine Abel's an AI, like Caine, but is surprisingly emotionally intelligent and ran the program that allowed humans to leave the circus. (Slight reference to @fannele's version of Able) If we follow the pilot, then something happened to him, but since Caine was described to be a silly guy by @gooseworx themselves, I don't think he had anything to do with it. (If he did it might've been an accident.) The programmers might have potentially removed Abel or accidentally deleted him for some reason, we can't know for sure.
Those are just my thoughts on Abel and whether it's right or wrong, I don't really care. I just like how this guy came out! I'll be honest though, I probably should've chosen a better pose that convey's Abel's personality a bit more. That and he just generally looks like Caine but with a different outfit and a different head. He low-key looks like if Caine wanted a to wear a very slight Sonic themed outfit.
Idk, I guess I just subconsciously wanted Caine and Abel to be twins. (Darn it ninja turtles you have invaded my brain even now!!).
Anyways. That's just my take, hope you like!
Do y'all remember that post I made about Piano from the MegaMan MegaMix?
Well, I finally got around to drawing her digitally. Also threw her original sketch under the cut
There's also at least one other thing I want to add to her character, but I'll keep that a secret for now. All I'll say is that we'll be seeing her in another post.
Random idea for Mutant Mashup: Red might be more anxious about being left alone than canon.
Canon Rise Raph had his bros, April, and his dad. A limited group of people, but that combined with the isolation meant that Raph only had his family as people he could trust. However, I think Raph got too reliant, being around his family to the point where if any of them leave Raph alone with his thoughts, he starts to panic.
I might be reading too far into this but that's just my reasoning for why Raph goes savage in Rise canon and I'll be extending that headcanon to Red in Mutant Mashup for now. Might change later.
The reason Red would be quicker to go savage when alone is because he has even more family which meant that Red was never really left alone. He was pulled in all directions by both his brother's and his cousin's and while he did have DaVinci there to shoulder some of the weight, at the end of the day Red didn't get a lot of time to himself. Red didn't mind that though and was happy to spend time with his family, he just needed to make sure that DaVinci was there to make sure nothing hurt the family while Red was gone.
Savage Raph in this au largely acts the same as in canon but calms down immensely once DaVinci inserts himself into the situation. Vin likes to keep clean and his wears his signature blue often so while Red won't recognize Vinnie immediately, he does recognize the color and feels safer as a result. LaceFace is still the main thing that snaps Red out of his savage mode.
I still want to think about this a bit more, not confident in enough with Red's reason to go savage mode when left alone. For now though, this is just an idea that doesn't have to be added into the Au rn.
Guys I'm not sure if any one will get this but signing this petition will support the production of season 3 of Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja.
I only just recently saw a few clips of the show and I already find it funny. Hopefully this reaches some Cunningham fans so you can help too.
I just realized something-
In the TMNT 2012 series, Kirby O'Neil is a psychologist so he could very well help the turtles with their trauma and maybe some other potential issues they never noticed.
I heard that Leo's visions of his deceased father are a potential symptom of schizophrenia. I personally don't think he has it, but I do like to think about it. Magic IS a canonical thing in the 2012 universe after all so maybe spirits do as well. Either way, the fact Leo is trying to speak to his father's spirit at all, even though he is no longer with them, is cause for concern. By that point the turtles had already met April's dad, so they could go to him for help if they got too overwhelmed.
I'm gonna add a cut off here so that you don't have to read about how this will effect that Mutant Mashup Au I've got with @possumsarenice if you don't want to.
Thanks for continuing to read!
Anyway, since canon Mr. O'Neil is a psychologist, in the Au he'd get along pretty well with Orange (Rise Mikey). He might think "Dr. Delicate Touch" comes off a little strong but thinks it's funny nonetheless. I kinda wonder their first meeting was Orange eagerly asking questions about Kirby's process and what it's like helping people through their issues. Kirby probably got a bit overwhelmed, but how could he resist this kid? (Rise Mikey in general just radiates "adopt me" vibes. Those puppy dog eyes let him get away with SO MUCH in this AU it's unreal.)
Kirby is a ball of nerves most of the time and over thinks a lot. Generally very stressed out, but he does love his daughter and only wants to see her happy. He'd definitely adopt the Hamato's, he knows they make May (2012 April) feel like she belongs so he doesn't mind them crashing at his apartment for movie nights or snacks or even if one of them needs advice.
Since I brought up Kirby it only feels appropriate to wonder about Carol O'Neil. In the Au, I imagine she's an accepting lady, if her daughter is anything to go by, and is generally very friendly. She'd also have that "calming vibe" and is very caring as long as you behave. She's a strong and encouraging mother that can and will mama bear April and her friends.
When it comes to both of them, Kirby and Carol are great friends. She and Kirby are probably those parent friends that meet up every once in a while to talk about whatever adventure their daughters went on. I don't really see them as a couple, just really good neighbors! Carol's calm nature helps keep Kirby from exploding with worry whenever May isn't home on time or something like that. I imagine both sets of O'Neil's live in the same apartment building, but are like a floor or two away from each other. May and April probably had several sleepovers as kids, so Kirby and Carol each have several blankets and pillows tucked away in case the girls ever need an emergency sleepover.
I think that both of them met the Hamato's at the same time, maybe during the Krang invasion. April and May were worried about their parents and quickly introduced them to the turtles before letting them know the situation. In this Au, the invasion lasts longer than canon, so Carol and Kirby bonded with Yoshi and Lou before Yoshi's death. Over time the two adopt the turtles one by one, Carol thinks they're sweet boi's while Kirby thinks they're kind hearted hooligans and always laughs at Blue's or Simoni's jokes.
I've been doodling a lot of turtles lately. These are the results.
Just some Rise boys, specifically, the Mutant Mashup boys. I started off with Donnie in like a crouching pose for funsies but thought soon after, "huh, what if I just practice drawing his expressions from the show?" Now look at em.
Some musings below the cut if you wanna read.
Their markings aren't set in stone, I can't decide between diamonds for Raph or something closer to those concept ninpo markings on Twitter for him. Leo is already pretty decked out with markings so not much to add there. Aside from maybe two more stripes that grow up to the corners of his mouth as he ages, or maybe extra stripes on his legs, Leo's pretty much set. Mikey's in the same boat, though I like to add extra spots for flavor. I had a little more fun with Donnie's marks. I liked the thought of him having a mark over his nose, it kinda looks like a bandaid which I enjoy. Plus I gave him some marks on his face that kinda match Leo's y'know, disaster twins and all. I intended to give him a mark on his neck for his "unemotional bad boy image," but I kept forgetting to add it and just decided to scrap it.
Since I shared the Rise kiddos, I'll just add the 2012 boys. Consider it an early reference for their face markings.
These boys I didn't use references for so they are off model quite a bit. The doodles were only meant to show their markings anyway so they'll do for now.
Since these boys are technically quadruplets, I decided to give them matching/mirrored marking placements and all their markings relate to their elemental ninpo. DaVinci's got a cloud on his right cheek which is opposite to Sanzio's, who's got a fire mark on his left cheek. Niccolo's got a splotchy marking on his right eye, completely opposite to Simoni's lightning bolt mark on his left eye. I'm not totally sold on Simon's eye mark and am probably gonna tweak it a bit.
Also, I didn't realize it but Zio and Nico have the same smile. Same with Vin and Simon.
Final note: I do still want to make them look like TMNT 2012 to an extent, so more practice and more references to come.
That should be all, I've got a few doodles that I wanna explain in another post but they gotta wait until I'm more rested. This one was just an explanation.
Stay safe y'all!!
They speak the truth.
The promised Poppy Playtime doodle
No she does not have a thought behind those eyes
