I'm Making Another Tragic Sang-woo Post Because This Poor Man Is Slaughtered By The Fandom Senselessly

i'm making another tragic sang-woo post because this poor man is slaughtered by the fandom senselessly

i don't see many people discuss this, so i wanted to hop on here and give my own personal thoughts.

flash forward to episode 7! for some context, player 069 begs the other players to leave the games. sang-woo stands up against 069 and yells at him for considering giving up after everything that's already happened.

i will provide the words from the transcript here.

"so what if we stop now? you think your wife will stop being dead if we all go now? and she'll forgive you for letting her get murdered?

if you can't keep going, then why are you alive right now? you should have been the one who died in there instead.

[points to the piggy bank.] see that? that's the price of being in here. and your wife and the others paid it with their lives.

and you wanna go and leave? you wanna start from the beginning again? you ready to do all that, huh? starting over again from nothing with that guilt."

----

from a surface level, this looks like an asshole move. which, to be fair, it sure as hell wasn't coming from a place of love.

from my perspective, however, this entire conversation feels like:

A) a projection of sang-woo's guilt

B) him internally trying to justify his own actions (aka killing ali) to himself

i honestly feel like this conversation is a mix of both. sang-woo obviously feels guilty for killing ali - his horrid thousand-yard stare and flinch as the gunshot goes off, as well as other subtle reactions after are very telling of that. i feel that might be the moment when he internally realizes he's too far gone. but he's trying so hard to justify and push that guilt down.

most importantly, i feel like a part of him isn't just talking to 069 and the other players.. but himself as well. trying to scold the part of himself that feels horribly guilty. the first part of the monologue especially.

anybody who says sang-woo doesn't feel guilt for his actions is very much wrong. but he's so desperate and focused on survival that he tries his hardest to abolish that guilt and justify the things he did. i don't think it ever works.

i love them i can’t 😭😭😭

people should understand the absolute joy in just wondering about whatever the fuck In-ho and Jun-ho could do because they are siblings. Like In-ho could've one day just thought of dropkicking his younger brother who's entering his teenage rebellion years and told In-ho he looked like a grandfather even in his mid thirties. There might have been a time where they were tickling each other and laughing and In-ho stopped because he realised he's a grown ass man and Jun-ho made fun of him for it which got him a smack on the head. In-ho could've accidentally thrown out Jun-ho's favourite pair of shoes and Jun-ho nearly pulls out his brother's hair as he's complaining about what a terrible older brother In-ho is for doing that and In-ho lets him. They would have the "no don't cry you can hit me back just don't tell eomma" moments

Now back to the Squid Game.

Interesting that's it a team us vs them.

As narrator Gihun says the rules are simple.

What? They are not simple. They are multifaceted. You have to hop on one foot until you become the inspector royal. Anything goes physically wise as you have to stay in a poorly drawn squid.* That fact they don't have permanent squid lines, also implies they (Gihun and Sangwoo, and Jungbae) grew up in proverty. They use dirt and a stick to draw one out.

And the way you win is by going through the squid head. So you tap a small hole to win with your foot.

We do get some good foreshadowing and Gihun character establishing moments.

Child Gihun to Child Sangwoo "look it's your mom" in a physical altercation. Where Sangwoo is such a mama's boy that he looked away. Sneaky Gihun takes that distraction to become the inspector royale.

Why that phrase though? Maybe a nice play on words related to a battle royale type situation?

Nice, nice establishing the two people most important to Sangwoo.

And establishing Gihun's quick thinking, guile hero street cred.

I love baby Gihun tucking in his shirt. And then just one word "Go". Already a little leader at heart, so bossy.

And the music is really ramping up with the white shirt tear. Gihun, your mom will be angry at you.

Maybe how πŸ€” the innocence of childhood games will be teared up, hollowed out, and corrupted for the VIPs sick source of entertainment.

I mean white is symbolically linked to purity, innocence, cleanliness, and new beginnings. Put a white light through a prism, you will get the visible color spectrum.

Baby Gihun is so agile. Where did this grace, go?

Baby Sangwoo it's okay, you did your best.

Interesting word choice of victory. Surely saying yes!! Or something else would suffice.

Maybe Ilnam really want this game to be the it factor. As it has everything he needs for this game to make list.

Or as I call it the let's make childhood games deadly for my wealthy clients, commit various crimes against humanity, and be a general evil person list. Instead of going to therapy or going into any other hobbies not murder related.

Us vs them mentality, all you need is squid drawn courtyard, and you can play it in a group or solo. Most importantly, it being physical means the VIPS have their gladiatorial arena fight for the grand finale.

I am sure, no important foreshadowing is happening here. Right? Right?

And the final end to the intro, the symbols forever tied to the organization is underneath their feet. Ready to pounce on them at their most vulnerable. So, they can be consumed.

So at the end of this series, this memory will be ruined, tarnished, in pieces to Gihun. Great way to start this. πŸ‘

I like a nice title intro of a show that I cannot make out.

Something some people don't understand is that Squid Game is an ALLEGORY

Yes, many characters are very dictated (/doomed) by the narrative, beholden to their convictions, BECAUSE IT’S AN ALLEGORY.

Yeah, some things don't seem 100% realistic (although it's a fantastically well thought out world and story), BECAUSE IT’S AN ALLEGORY.

This story, these characters, THIS ENTIRE WORLD was meticulously staged TO SEND US A MESSAGE.

It's about capitalism. It's about classism. It's about the evil of hoarded wealth. It's about the dehumanization and infantilization of disadvantaged groups by privileged ones. It's about choice and autonomy, and how neither of those mean much - and yet, mean EVERYTHING - when all you have are bad choices. When all you've BEEN GIVEN are bad choices.

It's about the violence of poverty. About what people become when they have no other choice. About what people become when they don't have even the basics of life provided for them, the selfish beasts we must become to survive when those situations are imposed - and about how, then, we're blamed for it.

It's about the way we're pitted against one another while those in power sit back and watch. It's about the violence of consumption - specifically media consumption.

Of course In-ho is a little evil; HE EXISTS TO SHOW US WHAT HAPPENS TO NORMAL PEOPLE WHEN YOU FORCE THEM INTO THOSE CHOICES.

Of course Gi-hun trusts too easily, accepts Young-il as a friend despite that damning number on his chest; HE EXISTS TO SHOW US THERE’S ANOTHER WAY.
