Hot Take: the reason why 'Lower Decks' (and 'The Orville') "feel more like Star Trek" than do 'Discovery' or 'Picard' is because the baseline for American drama series has gotten so dark over the last twenty years that a tone matching 90s Star Trek can now only be achieved by marketing it as a comedy.
And yes, when you think about it, that's...kind of sad.

The three of you get into trouble all the time
Janeway learned not to assign you to work as a group the hard way
You have weekly holodeck meetings scheduled, and you managed to rope the rest of the bridge crew into them at one point or another
You encourage Harry to play his instrument
He even offers to teach you to play; you’re a fairly fast learner
The three of you make competitions out of everything
It started with holodeck games; you’d see who was the better driver or could solve a mystery fastest
And soon you were competing over who could get the most praise (or admonishment) from Janeway in a day
The three of you always eat your meals together
Whenever any of you expresses romantic interest in a crew mate, the other two tease them relentlessly, and, of course, offer to be the wingmen
The three of you get into late night conversations about anything and everything
Sometimes you talk about the alien worlds you’ve come into contact with, sometimes you express your fears about never making it back home
The three of you know exactly how to comfort each other
(If you’re ever feeling down, you can expect to be bombarded with your favorite snacks and holo programs, and possibly a cuddle pile)
The entire crew knows that the three of you are practically inseparable
🤣
The little look between Chekov and Yeoman Landon (and even the security officer behind them). What does it mean? is it:
a) Chekov has been telling everyone that Kirk and Spock are in love but it was hard to get others to believe. This is his, "I told you so" face.
b) They, and most of the crew, ship their two superior officers and are inwardly gushing, excited to share the details after the mission is all over.
c) They have a betting pool on how much Kirk can flirt with their oblivious XO. Big points for the skin-to-skin contact there so someone just won a lot.
the least realistic thing about star trek is that starfleet uniforms don’t have pockets and nobody complains about it
a small list of organizations you can safely donate to in the wake of the horrific earthquake that struck our brothers in sisters in turkey and syria:
turkish red crescent: part of the international red cross and red crescent - currently opening mobile crisis centers, passing out tents and blankets, operating multiple catering vehicles and mobile kitchens
islamic relief: currently on the ground in turkey providing emergency food and shelter assistance and in syria providing health and medical supplies to local clinics and doctors and tents and provisions to those made homeless
MSF: doctors without borders is currently helping process the injured and the dead, as well as sending supply kits to local medical authorities in syria and beyond
the turkish embassy: in an official statement released by the embassies in many countries, they are accepting in person drop offs of supplies that will be sent to turkey and distributed. they have asked for the following: blankets, tents, sleeping bags, pocket warmers or heaters, winter clothing, and over the counter meds for cold, flu, pain killers, etc
turkish government and non profit organizations like ahbap, afad, akut, and more are all accepting donations and some are asking for local volunteers
Being a DS9 fan is this constant search for little pieces of production knowledge that depress the fuck out of us.
“Did you know that Andy and Siddig ship Garak and Bashir???”
I know, it’s depressing because it’s not in the show.
“Did you know that Jadzia and Worf were originally intended to stay married till the end and have kids???”
I know. It’s depressing because it’s not in the show.
“Did you know they were going to make Garak a regular at one point?”
I know. It’s depressing because it’s not in the show.
“Did you know there was a less transphobic version of ‘Lace and Profit’ that was written and directed by Armin Shimmerman because he thought that Trans issues were important and wanted to take the idea of Quark transitioning seriously and not play it for laughs?”
I know. It’s depressing because it’s not in the show.
“Did you know there was a take where Quark and Odo kissed?”
I KNOW. AND ITS DEPRESSING BECAUSE ITS NOT IN THE SHOW!!!!
It’s just like, every day I see another post from an excited fan who finds out that something could have been different that would have made the show mind blowing.
And I think the fact that it’s still so damn good and so damn beloved really speaks to its quality, knowing full well the insurmountable amount of missed opportunities the show had.
DS9 my infinitely flawed and perfect gem. You make me feral.
I really really want the new star treks like strange new worlds to include some just bat shit crazy episodes. Like I, Mudd from tos where they confuse androids into destruction by dancing around to no music. Or the tribble episode. Or the ds9 episode where they have a full on casino heist, or start a baseball team. Or the captain proton episode on voyager where Janeway has to pretend to be queen arachnia. Like. Give me some episodes like that
How many secrets can Spock spill before he sleeps?
Lower Decks knows what’s up:
“I’m sorry, I’ve gotta be honest, I didn’t join Starfleet to get in phaser fights. I signed up to explore, to be out in space making new discoveries, and peaceful, diplomatic solutions. That’s boldly going. And you know what? I’d love to be in a string quartet. I loved that when Riker was on the Enterprise he was out there jamming on the trombone, and catching love disease, and acting in plays, and meeting his identical transporter clone Thomas. That stuff may not seem as cool as what you guys do, but it’s Starfleet. All the way.”
(Boimler in Kayshon, His Eyes Open)
That’s the real Star Trek, that’s the kind of Star Trek I love watching the most
Star Trek! The original series, the next generation, voyager, deep space 9, lower decks, and strange new worlds. Hopefully I'll get around to the others some day. Sometimes I'll post something else. Let's build a world we can be proud of!
