Random Headcanon: That Federation vessels in Star Trek seem to experience bizarre malfunctions with such overwhelming frequency isn’t just an artefact of the television serial format. Rather, it’s because the Federation as a culture are a bunch of deranged hyper-neophiles, tooling around in ships packed full of beyond-cutting-edge tech they don’t really understand. Endlessly frustrating if you have to fight them, because they can pull an effectively unlimited number of bullshit space-magic countermeasures out of their arses - but they’re as likely as not to give themselves a lethal five-dimensional wedgie in the process. All those rampant holograms and warp core malfunctions and accidentally-traveling-back-in-time incidents? That doesn’t actually happen to anyone else; it’s literally just Federation vessels that go off the rails like that. And they do so on a fairly regular basis.
I've said all this before but I still love this pop culture liminal space star trek occupies where like.. It's iconic. It's massively influential. It's genre defining. It holds historical significance. Everybody knows about star trek. But it also takes a certain type of nerdass to actually actively participate in Liking Star Trek
Hot Take: the reason why 'Lower Decks' (and 'The Orville') "feel more like Star Trek" than do 'Discovery' or 'Picard' is because the baseline for American drama series has gotten so dark over the last twenty years that a tone matching 90s Star Trek can now only be achieved by marketing it as a comedy.
And yes, when you think about it, that's...kind of sad.
a small list of organizations you can safely donate to in the wake of the horrific earthquake that struck our brothers in sisters in turkey and syria:
turkish red crescent: part of the international red cross and red crescent - currently opening mobile crisis centers, passing out tents and blankets, operating multiple catering vehicles and mobile kitchens
islamic relief: currently on the ground in turkey providing emergency food and shelter assistance and in syria providing health and medical supplies to local clinics and doctors and tents and provisions to those made homeless
MSF: doctors without borders is currently helping process the injured and the dead, as well as sending supply kits to local medical authorities in syria and beyond
the turkish embassy: in an official statement released by the embassies in many countries, they are accepting in person drop offs of supplies that will be sent to turkey and distributed. they have asked for the following: blankets, tents, sleeping bags, pocket warmers or heaters, winter clothing, and over the counter meds for cold, flu, pain killers, etc
turkish government and non profit organizations like ahbap, afad, akut, and more are all accepting donations and some are asking for local volunteers

The fact that there’s a third guy with them makes even more obvious that Kirk and Spock are staying so unnecessarily close to each other lol

IM CORRECTING MY LAST POST.
JAMES T. KIRK SEARCHED THE GALAXY FOR SPOCK'S LITERAL MIND AND THAT MIND FOUND KIRK ON ITS OWN AND THE FIRST THING IT SAYS IS "Captain, there's a definite pleasurable expirience connected to the hearing of your voice".
QUÉ.
Lower Decks gets it:
“I’m sorry, I’ve gotta be honest, I didn’t join Starfleet to get in phaser fights. I signed up to explore, to be out in space making new discoveries, and peaceful, diplomatic solutions. That’s boldly going. And you know what? I’d love to be in a string quartet. I loved that when Riker was on the Enterprise he was out there jamming on the trombone, and catching love disease, and acting in plays, and meeting his identical transporter clone Thomas. That stuff may not seem as cool as what you guys do, but it’s Starfleet. All the way.”

Star Trek! The original series, the next generation, voyager, deep space 9, lower decks, and strange new worlds. Hopefully I'll get around to the others some day. Sometimes I'll post something else. Let's build a world we can be proud of!
