Lugh, Lord of Craftsmanship, Light, Victory and War, is a master builder, harper, poet, warrior, sorcerer, metalworker, cupbearer and physician. It’s hard to envision anything that Lugh isn’t good at.

Lugh was venerated throughout the ancient Celtic world. At least fourteen European Cities are named for Lugh, including Laon, Leyden, Loudon and Lyon. Lyon’s old name was Lugdunum, meaning “Lugh’s Fort”. That city is believed to have been his cult center. Its coins bore the images of ravens, which may be a reference to Lugh. The Romans identified Lugh with Mercury. Many European churches dedicated to Michael the Archangel are believed to have been built over sites once dedicated to Lugh. Post-Christianity, many of Lugh’s sacred functions were reassigned to saints like Patrick and Luke.

Lugh apparently traveled westward through Europe. Irish and Welsh myths describe his first appearance in their pantheon. He is greeted with resistance from women in Wales. His first public act in Ireland is to join battle with the Tuatha Dé Danann (his father’s people) against the Fomorian, his mother’s people. Lugh chooses allegiance with his paternal line; the myth may be interpreted as indicating the beginnings of patriarchy in Ireland.

☀️ Manifestation: He is often described as shining, handsome, charming and witty. He has a silver tongue to match his skillful hands.

☀️ Consorts: Lugh has different consorts in different locations, but he was frequently linked to Rosmerta

☀️ Festival: August 1st, the festival of Lughnasa. Lughnasa means “the marriage of Lugh”. Lugh the sun and the Earth Mother renew their vows annually during the full moon in August and invite all to gather and revel with them. Lughnasa celebrates the consummation of their sacred relationship.

Once upon a time, Lughnasa was a four week festival; the last two weeks of July and the first two weeks of August, roughly corresponding to when the sun is in Leo, the astrological sign that belongs to the sun and epitomizes its power. In modern Irish Gaeilge, the month of August is Lunasa. However, the modern wiccan sabbat of Lughnasa is almost devoted solely to the eve of July 31st leading to Lughnasa Day on August 1st.

simple daily crafts (i)

i don’t have access to most witch resources (herbs, crystals, divination tools, etc) so i often opt to incorporate simple witchcraft on my daily routines:

chanting a spell as i take a shower to cleanse my body and re-establish a layer of protection (great for witches who associate with water)

use spells to help my skin be clear and healthy as i do my skincare routine

draw sigils on foggy surfaces (eg. mirrors after a hot shower)

pour good intentions into my cooking (health, prosperity, etc for those who eat it)

enchant my drinks so they can help cleanse my body from the inside

get permission to eat edible offerings to impart the energy, strength, and wisdom of my deities/guardians/etc

use part salt water when i mop the floor to cleanse my space regularly

enchant my money so that when they’re with me, they keep my finances prosperous and when i use them they’ll help me earn more in the future (you can also enchant them so nobody can use them for “bad” purposes, curse those who steal it, etc the possibility is endless)

enchant and charge my detergent so when i wash my clothes, any energy that negatively impact me that stuck to them will be neutralized

use glamour spells when i put on my make up

cleanse my living space using smoke from incenses (usually ones i’ve offered to my patron deity, after getting their permission) and establish a layer of invisibility protection

use novels and textbooks i have for bibliomancy

basically enchant everything and anything cause there are no limits to this!

Thrifty Witch Thursdays: Hagstones

Whilst focusing on hagstones I wanted this to be a reminder that witchcraft is whatever you have and whatever you can find. Go back to nature, you find a twig or stone you like? Pick it up, thank your deity for the gift and take it home.

Hagstones/Odin Stones/Seers Stones are stones which naturally have holes in them due to being worn by water, whether that’s the sea or a rolling river.

There are many myths around these stones and I invite you to find your own which you like. Some say if you look through the stones you will see the fae world and be able to see through glamours. Others say you will see a person’s true self. 

If you write a wish on a piece of paper and put it through the hole it could come true.

They are linked to Odin, by resembling the hole he had to bore through the mountain to reach the sacred mead.

I found these stones in Portsmouth, UK, and I was lucky to find quite a few as it was a fairly pebbly beach. If you’re lucky to live near a pebbly beach I think you’ll find a few too. Otherwise they can be quite rare. If you really wish for one and keep your eye out you’ll sure to come across one!

(Please don’t buy these for extortionate prices online, I understand you may not have the ability to find them due to where you live but I’d hate to see anyone get ripped off for our craft. I have a few, if you’d absolutely love one I will be happy to send you one.)

Eco-witchery

Being a witch involves more than just the use of herbs and pretty rocks and moon water, it also includes preserving and protecting the resources that are very important to our craft and our being. Nature is our only source and needs to be respected and all her gifts used wisely.

Recycling and conserving has become the norm nowadays considering the growing shortage of our natural resources and I am so here for it. Here is my list of ways us witches can do our part:

When you boil your veggies, save the water to feed your little plant babies. Considering we are going through an intense drought for us Capetonians, this is a must. 

Use eggshells and coffee grounds to add nutrients to your soil for your plant babies.

Use old cereal, cookies or bread to feed the local feathered friends. This is especially helpful in winter when food is scarce.

Refrain from planting foreign plants, it could have a negative effect on the native flora and fauna.

Gather as much rain water as you can during the rainy seasons for watering plants. Even make moon water or enchanted water to bring prosperity and give your plant babies a little boost.

Save all your seeds!

Keep all pesticides away from your plants, especially if you plan on consuming them or using them in magic.

If you stay close to the ocean, gather some seaweed, dry it and crush it to be used on plants. It has tons of nutrients to help your lil bebes grow big and strong.

Instead of using plastic tags to mark your herbs, make your own out of twigs and just shave a spot off for writing. Get creative and make your garden look extra magical.

Plant loads of succulents, they use very little water, are super low maintenance and are beautiful to look at.

MULCHING is a water saving essential !!!

Don’t toss the weeds, find out what their properties are and how you could use it. Even if it is just for fertilizing or making a tea for your plants.

If you have any fur babies, find some plants that they like. Find out what plants they like, e.g catnip for kittens.

The same way some witches make their own wands or magical tools, why not make your own magical gardening tools from recycled or recyclable materials?

The one who will cry when no-one sees. Tries to catch attention, sometimes they are not trying at all. They are the people who laugh at silly jokes or laugh at literally everything. Hot headed tho. Ready to smass anyone if it's needed. Sadly people may hate on them without reason. But they're one of the most loyal and reliable creatures out there.

Taurus rising: They observe everything that happens. Notice every single detail but don't say anything. Also notice every difference at people character, acts, vibes. Fun to be around. Weird type of beauty. Realistic expectations but deep down inside they believe that magic always happens, they believe they can do the impossible. Appear as a cold person but they are not once you know them. They can't open up easily to others. Shy. Really calm and they can relax others too.

Gemini rising: Impulsive. Act before they think sometimes. Anxiety for everything. Knows everything for everyone. Cries a lot but they prefer to keep it for themselves. Talkative and usually smile a lot. Worries about every subject. Likes to be the center of attention. Looks like dolls, with cute characteristics. Dreamers. One of their dreams is to travel as much as they can. Can lie to get out of a trouble. Unfortunately they can lie about everything without reason. That's why people tend to not rely on them. Witty as well.

Cancer rising: They love to stay home. That's the aura and vibes they give tho, they feel like home. Likely to have one cozy place at their house only for them. They like blankets too. Warm hearths full of love. Motherly way of love. They love children and animals so much. But can be possessive with their loved ones, because of their fear if their loved ones find someone better. It's sad that they can't feel enough no matter what. Low self-esteem.

Leo rising: Act like lions. Not afraid to be alone and fight for everything they want. Ambitious but get frustrated easily. Enthusiasm. Can be selfish and self-centered. Looks royal. Fiery way of love. They give everything but rarely get back what they have given. Also they remind me of gold. Very beautiful, expensive and bright. But not all people gonna see their worth. Don't take it that personally. I have observed that usually are tall people.

Virgo rising: An extrovert introvert. Can communicate with the others, even if they met them two minutes like they know them all their life. Can be in every friend group but still be an introvert. They keep things for themselves and just listen the other during a discussion. As a Mercurian kid are very intelligent and curious to learn more. Can be freak about their health. Discretion, courtesy and modesty.

Libra rising: People who always have a smile at their face. Very protective especially with their friends or partner. Charming Venusian. Once they care about you never stop. They try to balance everything at their life, sometimes try to balance others life too. There are times when they are quite determined and dynamic and other times their insecurities bring them to the need for support from those close to them. They can be impulsive and unambitious as well.

Scorpio rising: Mysterious, dark aura above you. Really intense eyes. They have developed intuition and great magnetism. They have a rich imagination and they like that it has to do with mystery, metaphysics and spirituality. They are distinguished for their great endurance, determination and perseverance. Many difficulties through their life, especially at childhood. Can be clingy and possessive because of their super intense way to love.

Sagittarius rising: Childish humour. Generally they act like kids or teenagers. Carefree and lack of fear. Bold. They manage to overcome all the obstacles and difficulties of life simply with a smile and in a good mood. Very generous. They have open spiritual horizons and easily adapt to situations, changing perceptions and ideas when they discover the new that overthrows the old. They do not remain static and have no obsessions. But lack of patience does not allow them to reach their goals

Aquarius rising: A popular loner. They belong everywhere and nowhere. Very different from the ordinary. They like it tho. Very beautiful and mysterious also. They are a spirit of contradiction and controversy, and a revolutionary many times for no reason. They are ready to offer their help and support to anyone who needs it. They support people even if they made mistakes, made bad choices. They try to change the society and make it with more justice, fun. Can be really egocentric and they have high standards, sometimes impossible.

Pisces rising: A psychic, a healer. They are a sensitive and compassionate people. They feel joy and satisfaction to offer their help generously to their fellow human beings and they can even sacrifice their personal desires to give support around them. They have a rich imagination, they are a dreamer and many times they create in their imagination a dream world of their own which is very far from reality. Hello family! Let’s do another journal Prompt!

This one is going a little further regarding self reflection and noticing some unhealthy habits or behaviors that affect you negatively. I remind that you use these prompts with caution and to reach out to your support system if needed for extra support.

1. Describe the top 3 lessons that you have learned the hard way: these could be small lessons or large lessons which ever ones that impacted your life the most. Go into detail if you need to.

2. Describe the top 5 negative habits or behaviors you wish to change or understand? Negative behaviors could be; being quick to anger, self destructive habits, talking poorly about others, etc.

3. Are you afraid of being yourself in front of others? Are there certain people whom you don’t feel comfortable being yourself around? Why? This is the time to reflect who you surround yourself with and who makes you feel uncomfortable being your most authentic self. Explore the reasons behind why you feel this way. Is it worth having them in your life if you cannot practice being yourself? Or how can you be comfortable being yourself around these people?

4. Are you projecting your habits onto others without realizing it? Sometimes when we hurt or we are upset/uncomfortable/ don’t like something about ourselves we take our unwanted feelings or emotions and attributing them onto someone else. Usually an example would be; a cheating spouse would accuse the other of cheating, a friend betraying and accuse the other of betraying, a person lying and accuse the other of lying, etc.
