I really wanted to add to Martins design some visible mark form The Lonely. Some kind of scar, like Jon is marked (many times (he's like a used chew toy, look at him). So with the loneliness, in my mind, a cold feeling, to the point of numbness (the COLD fog, the COLD uncaring ocean, etc.) I thought frostbite. Not the black sort, but a blue-ish scars on his hands. Forever deprived of sensation. I guess his hair was all white, but it receded a bit, after leaving The Lonely.

its understandable that people characterize elias as a stereotypical annoying bitch disney villain, but i feel like the canon was trying to do something so much funnier with him. his main personality trait was never being petty or overtly evil. it was being boring and corporate. this is not loki, this is like. the narrator from the stanley parable. ok. this is mr. does budgeting for fun. he is an automatically generated manager who just so happens to be a 200 year old evil false prophet.

"what even happens in the magnus archives" Everything Happens In The Magnus Archives. it's all in there. you name something that is in any way scary or unpleasant then it's in there somewhere. if you have a niche phobia or recurring nightmare of any kind, no matter how obscure you may believe it to be, then one day you are going to queue up an episode and listen to the intro music play and then they'll read out the title "episode 42069, catching you in 4k" and recite your own personal worst fear Directly into your ear canals, in exactly the words you would use to describe it. the sixth episode is about exploding worm sex that kills you. and then there are 194 more episodes after that.

The mommy issues in TMA are off the wall. Here's an abusive cold mother, there's an abusive cold mother. Is she a mom? Then you can bet your ass she's going to have the deft tones of a Adora Crellin french kissing the Evil Queen from Snow White. Mother figure? Don't think you're safe either — she won't tell you about the brain tumor you have and when it kills you she won't even cry about it and you'll feel stupid for thinking she ever would. There's a big evil monster spider and we call her "The Mother" too. Even the grandmother's are like at best fed up with you and tired of having to provide for others, and at worst segmenting you And what makes it so much weirder is that Jonathan Sims our writer seems to have a super chill fun relationship with his cool english teacher Mom — such to the point she agreed to act in his podcast, PLAYING A COLD AND CALCULATING MOTHER FUCKER.

Wrong! The most scary part of TMA when you're watching for the first time and realize far too deep in that you really should be have been trying to remember peoples names.

I think that “there are some fanfiction that are on par with or better than some professionally published books” and “you shouldn’t hold fanfiction to the standards you hold professionally published books as they are often only written by one not professional writer with no editor” are two statements that can and should coexist

One of my favorite things about The Magnus Archives is how we're initially introduced to two characters: One who is an Archivist who is very scholarly, curious, and observant. And the other is a kind man who likes to make tea and is said by multiple people to have no survival instincts.

Then as the series goes on the kind man with "no survival instincts" is slowly reveled to be someone who is quite cunning and manipulative when he needs to be. He's consistently shown to be one of the smartest characters in the series, and he pulls off some pretty impressive feats like playing Peter like a fiddle for the majority of season 4 and having enough foresight to put an end to the apocalypse in season 5.

Then there's the Archivist. While he is very book smart, most of his street smart plans rely on ✨vibes✨ and the phrase "Gee. I sure hope this works!" He got lost in the tunnels where his boss was murdered. He has been kidnapped an unreasonable amount of times. He read a statement about a binding ritual trapping a creature to a table and decided to hit said table with an axe.

Martin and Jon are such good subversions of their character archetypes and it's so fun to think about. Martin, who tends to be portrayed as the worst assistant in season 1, ends up making logical choices even when they contradict with what his heart/gut instinct wants. Meanwhile, Jon, who is first portrayed as this guy who is "logical to the point of skepticism," ends up spending most of the series making choices with his heart and/or gut instinct. He's not great at using his head when push comes to shove, but he's usually trying to make the choice that feels right in the moment.

Jon and Martin's growth throughout the series takes them in opposite directions that break their archetypes, and that makes the series so much more enjoyable to me. It wouldn't be the same if Martin hadn't burned the statements in front of Elias or if Jon hadn't broken into Gertrude's flat, and I do love how the "logical Archivist" is genuinely one of the most unhinged characters in the series by like... season 2.

was reading tma transcripts in a waiting room earlier and I forgot how much integral shit is set up so early on I only got to like episode five and there was Gerard and Mary, breekon and hope, Michael Crew, it's crazy

You know, I don't think we've discussed enough the fact that when all the worms broke through the wall and entered the archives, Jon froze. Sasha was pleading for him in the background to take charge and tell them all what to do, but it was Martin who took the reins and lead them to document storage where they would be safe. Martin is much better at making split-second decisions than Jon is--and while he'd probably argue it was only to protect them, he's better at leading than he gives himself credit for.

Genuinely curious about how Oliver Banks feels about waking Jon up.

Like he spends so much of the series trying and failing to help people. He can't save Gertrude. He can't help Jane Prentiss.

He can't even save his dad.

He kills twenty people when he goes to Point Nemo

Then one day, after he's given into the End, given up on rescuing anyone, he dreams of Jon, finds him in a hospital, gives his statement. And Jon wakes up.

For ten years, Oliver's been haunted, cursed with dreams of people dying, unable to prevent it from happening. Until finally he meets Jon and he's able to help him.

And then Jon ends the world.
