The Faerie Star

The Faerie Star

The Faerie Star

The seven-pointed star or Faerie Star is an emerging symbol in contemporary magick. It is most often used to represent the worlds of Faerie. It can be displayed as a protective shield, a powerful talisman, a focal point for meditation, or a symbol of the Shining Realms.

The seven-pointed star is called a septagram, septegram, or heptagram. This glyph has had mystical associations for centuries, probably longer, since the number seven is important in many spiritual traditions around the world.

The Faerie Star

Medieval alchemists used the seven-pointed star to stand for the seven alchemical metals and their corresponding planets. But it can also stand for the seven colors, the seven days of the week, the seven musical notes, the Seven Sisters (Pleiades), the seven chakras, or any of the many sacred things that come in groups of seven. In Hermetic Qabalah, the septagram can represent the sphere of Netzach and the corresponding planet of Venus. Aleister Crowley also chose a septagram as the Seal of Babylon, the Great Mother and Sacred Whore of Thelema.

The septagram, because it has an odd number of points, can be traced in a continuous line. Its unbroken form helps give the star its identity as a symbol of eternity.

The Faerie Star

The Faerie Star is most often shown as a continuous figure with elongated points. No one can really say how or when the motif became incorporated into modern Paganism, but it is now a common sight in books, on jewelry, and on altar tools. Many practitioners use the Faerie Star instead of, or in addition to, the familiar five-pointed pentagram. Some say that the seven-pointed star reflects planetary (celestial) magick, while the pentagram encompasses magick of the elements and the earth.

Shadow Work – What is the Shadow?

The shadow is the darker aspects to our personality.

It is the negative emotions and impulses we experience. It is what we deny about ourselves and what we are truly capable of. Whatever is perceived as inferior or unacceptable will become a part of the shadow. Anything that does not agree with who we project ourselves out to be will dive into this dark, hidden side.

The personal shadow self represents the parts of us we no longer claim to be our own, including positive qualities we have dismissed.

The aspects of who we are and what is thrown away or simply dismissed do not go anywhere. We can deny these qualities for as long as we like to, but they still exist as part of our unconscious.

The unconscious is everything we are not conscious of. Examining and becoming aware of your personal shadow self is discovering what you as a person are actually capable of and accepting it for what it is. There is no way to destroy the shadow self because it is in part pieces to who we truly are on the inside. It stays with us and when any troubling situations happen the shadow is there.

Witchy Tools: Black Salt

Used For

Black salt, or Witch’s salt, is used primarily for banishment, protection, and repelling things or beings. However, it has also been used in curses/hexes and in rituals. It can protect physical spaces, against nightmares, against negative energy, harmful rumors, and unwelcomed people. It can also help with removing curses and dealing with negative thoughts and feelings, as well as getting rid of unwanted entities.

Materials

White salt (rock or regular)

Black pepper (whole kernels work best)

Charcoal (use activated charcoal to make it edible)

Ashes (any kind, but use coconut ash to make it edible, and use protective plant ash to make the protection effects stronger)

Optional: cast iron scrapings, coffee grounds, dirt

Process

Grind together the ingredients with the help of a mortar and pestle. Use your intention and will while mixing to give it its power, remembering what you are using it for, the same as you would with a spell. Black salt will either be a spell as is or be a component of one in the future, so magically charging it while making it is just as important as it would be in any other kind of magical working. Mix all the components together until you have a mixture that has turned fully black and looks pretty uniform.

You can also add small bits of other herbs and spices to the mixture to make it more aggressive, protective, etc of a mixture, if you want a more targeted approach. Adding things like chili and paprika make it more aggressive, while things like rosemary or sage make it more protective, for example.

Why it Works/History

It has unrelated origins in Hoodoo, Western Alchemy, Appalachian folk magic, and European folk magic. Beyond that, a lot of the origins and history of black salt - as well as when it first began to be used - is hard to find.

The salt is for protection and purification or absorbing negative energy, the black pepper is for protection (especially from bad people) and warding or banishing negativity, the ashes are for concealing and protection (especially if ashes from protective plants are used), and the charcoal is used to get rid of bad magic. The optional iron scrapings are good for protection from various entities, while the optional coffee grounds are good for keeping out entities and for protection. The optional dirt is good for grounding, as well as whatever additions the type of dirt it is adds to the mixture (for example, graveyard dirt is good for warding and banishing, while dirt from the witch’s home is good for protecting the household).

Types of Spells

When I talk about spell types, I'm not referring to different spells, as in a protection spell versus an anti-anxiety spell. I'm going to go over the different types of:

Spell Jars Most of what's on this list are going to be self-explanatory, but these types of spells are typically in a glass jar and have ingredients like herbs, flowers, incense, essential oils, and liquids, and are sealed using wax. Spell jars do not actually have to be in glass jars, you can use old medication bottles, empty seasoning bottles, gum containers. These types of spells are meant to last years, decades if needed.

Spell Candles These are typically used for a quicker and more prolonged spell. The bigger the candle the longer it's going to take to burn all the way down. If you want to use something like a tea-light, take the candle and the wick out and place the herbs on the bottom, making sure to burn the candle all the way. You do not need to burn the entire candle all at once to get the effect you desire. Remember, this is a *personal* practice.

Sachets These are fabric pouches, with herbs and typically stuffed with cotton so one may sleep with the satchet. I highly recommend researching your cultures history(ies) with sachets as they all differ and diverge from one another. (It's quite fascinating to see the synchronicities.)

Scroll Spells I mentioned these in a previous post of mine and I've been wanting to discuss these as I don't see many of any one else talk about them. I got the inspiration from Naruto, although if you wanted to you could take inspiration from other pieces of media, from the scrolls used when summoning animals and types of ninja tools. You take a piece of paper, I prefer to use construction paper (use that colour magick!), and write a small ask of what you need and/or what you want, along with a sigil or as many sigils you want! Wrap use the paper and tie a string around it, seal it in wax if you prefer, and Boom you're done! I like to add a small piece of a broken off crystal inside of the drying wax for a bit of extra pizzaz!

A Witch's Box or a Witch's Jar These spells are not-quite all encompassing, these are historically ambiguous as these types of spells are so old, we as humans don't remember what they were once used for. They were typically thought of as a second-body of sorts, as they are tag-locked using urine or hair of that who made it, and spirits and evil-entities would get confused as to where that person's body is, and go after the jar or box.

Charmed Objects These spells are used to charm objects, these can range from your jewelry and make them in something that can protect you, your shoes - to help you go on more adventures, a salt lamp to ward off negative entities, or ornaments/nicknacks around the home to do various tasks. I like to create salt dough, it has protective properties from the salt and creates various shapes - moons, stars, marshmallows - and charming these objects for the associations of these objects.

Petitions These are letters you write or type and print, and set up for manifestations. Sealing the letters in wax definitely help give the vibe of an elder witch practicing.

Technomagick vs Technomancy vs Techpaganism vs Cyberwitchcraft etcetcetc

Fellow practitioners of magick,

I am conducting research for a book about the use of technology in magickal practices, and I would like to ask for your opinions on a matter. Specifically, I am wondering if “technomagick” is a viable umbrella term that would include the practices of technomancy, technopaganism, technoshamanism, and cyberwitchcraft.

I have seen the term “technomancy” used as a catch-all phrase, but its etymology would suggest it is primarily concerned with forms of divination that make use of technology. This has led to some confusion about what terms are appropriate to use when discussing these practices.

As practitioners of various magickal traditions, I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter. Do you believe that “technomagick” is a useful term to describe these practices, or do you prefer another term? And if so, what term do you think would be most appropriate?

Please note that I am not able to give away the core subject of my book at this time, but I am happy to discuss this topic further and answer any questions you may have.

Thank you in advance for your input!“
