Zhanyi and Tianshan, and their respective roles in the story

I’m sure that everyone remembers that 19 days originally started as a story that revolved around Jian Yi and his stoic childhood friend Zhan Zheng Xi, their comedic adventures and that lighthearted yet painful subplot of unrequited love that Jian Yi had been harbouring for years.

So then, what’s the point of introducing Tianshan and giving them no small amount of screentime? Let me play the Captain Obvious for a bit.

The answer is simple: we are meant to compare and contrast these two relationships.

In literature and other media, this technique or a trope is called “Foil”. To put it even simpler, it’s akin to a backdrop against which we are meant to view something. Television, particularly romantic comedies and dramas, often invoke a similar method by providing an “alpha couple” and “beta couple”, with an alpha couple being the main focus. The viewer is meant to compare the romance (and its obstacles) between these two pairings.

Now the peculiarity of 19 days is that with OX storytelling method, we don’t really have a fixed alpha couple anymore: the focus of the story switches between Zhanyi and Tianshan to the point where each becomes an alpha couple for the time being. In other words, they switch from alpha couple to beta couple and vice versa.

Why providing a foil is a good technique? Well for once it serves to underscore the unique traits of each character. By focusing on interactions between two different couples their personalities (habits, verbal manners, behaviours, etc) are brought forth.

With Zhanyi and Tianshan we get two dramatically different relationships with inherently different arcs, so much that, in fact, one might consider them “inversions”.

Zhanyi is a childhood friends-to-lovers kind of story. Their relationship is fairly healthy, based on mutual support that dates back to their kindergarten days. We have the steady love of Jian Yi and his deep emotional attachment to Xixi, who in turn plays the role of the knight in shining armour by always wanting to protect Jian Yi. They share common ground, and while there is/was a subplot of “defrosting” ZZX, their relationship is already going steady.

Tianshan of the other hand started off the shaky ground, with outright hostility and even some violence. Not only they had never interacted before, but they are also different as day and night, or rugs and riches. Their story is about curbing their violent tendencies, finding the good in each other and building trust (which they don’t have from the beginning, unlike Zhanyi). These are the key ideas for this relationship.

What’s more, both couples have different development patterns laid out for them. If Tianshan is about building trust from scratch, Zhanyi is apparently about losing trust and then having to rebuild it.

Why? Let’s look at the very premise of 19 days. From the very beginning, we’re told that Jian Yi disappeared on the second day of high school and had been absent for 3 years. At some point, ZZX asks him about what happened, and so Jian Yi tells him. What’s peculiar is that ZZX reaction to the story of kidnapping is that of disbelief.

image
image

It always seemed strange to me, especially considering the fact that we have seen precedents of kidnapping before and ZZX is well aware of it. The first time, when a shady old man kidnapped Jian Yi, and right now when Jian Yi is told to stay at He Cheng’s place. Both times ZZX is aware of what’s happening, yet in the future, his reaction is similar to hearing the truth from Cassandra. Cassandra’s truth is the trope that implies that nobody believes the one telling the actual truth (named after Cassandra The Prophet from Greek mythology, who was cursed to utter accurate prophecies that no one ever believed). It seems to suggest that ZZX no longer believes Jian Yi. It may also mean that these “kidnapping” attempts had become so frequent, that ZZX doesn’t take them seriously anymore, and thinks that Jian Yi is being a boy who cries “wolves!”. Did the disappearance hurt ZZX? Undoubtedly. Did he think that Jian Yi was pulling a prank or simply pulled a disappearing act? Sure. Future-set chapters seem to be dedicated to ZZX learning to trust this new Jian Yi, and them trying to pick up their relationship from shambles, but right now Zhanyi faces the calm before the storm.

If I were to make schemes for their relationships, it would look like this:

Zhanyi: start > the fall > the rise

Tianshan: start > the rise > the fall

Zhanyi starts off steady and friendly, but then comes “the fall”, i.e. Jian Yi disappearing without a word, which pretty much shatters what they have been building so far. Their goal after his return would be to get back on track and fix everything that went wrong between them. Now, if OX truly planned Tianshan as the inverse of Zhanyi, then their story arc will be a flip of Zhanyi. They start off being enemies, then they’ll slowly build trust, and then, presumably, comes the fall. Not sure what it is yet, but possibly He Tian leaving abroad, which might set them back a bit.

Back to the point. We, as readers, are meant to find contrasts between these two types of relationships and their story arcs. There are also other significant differences that OX supposedly wants to implement. As such, one of the OX latest artworks is a visual metaphor for the intrinsically contradictory natures of these couples.

image

OX used dramatically different colour palettes and symbolism here. Where Zhanyi is light and more comedic, Tianshan is darker due to initial violence and drama. Tianshan is marked by black and has this low-key BDSM vibe running, whilst Zhanyi has this angel/priest theme, symbolizing their purity. The illustration is quite a bit representative of sexual vibes of two couples. Tianshan has a bit more physical undertones to their interaction compared to more innocent Zhanyi. It is further accentuated by the future-set specials: whereas Zhanyi share a tender indirect kiss for Xmas, He Tian openly presents Mo with condoms, etc.

I wouldn’t be surprised if – provided OX hints at sexual interaction in future-set chapters – physical intimacy affected their relationships in fundamentally different ways (again, for readers to compare and contrast). For instance, whereas for Zhanyi it would lead to solidifying their bond, for Tianshan it could bring about more complications and further pondering on the thing going on between them.

All of it is absolutely pure speculation that is based on the supposition that thematically OX created these couples as foils to one another.

All in all, let’s celebrate the diversity. Both relationships are interesting and very fun to compare against one another. There are rises and falls to them. Sometime soon it will be Zhanyi that will plunge into a heartrending drama, and Tianshan would get the calm before the storm.

Jotting down my thoughts and theories on Jian Yi’s family.

Until this point, we know that Jian Yi’s father is a mafia boss, right?

Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.

The family separation from Jian Yi’s dream. For me, the father’s decision to leave is to protect his family from any potential risks. Living with a person of a mafia background is never a wise choice, for any members of the family could easily be targeted by enemies. Hence the father’s decision.

JY’s ‘kidnap’ (by Cheng & co.) from earlier was strange, but somehow it reminds me think of the newest chapter.

Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.
Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.

My point is: they were taking him to a safer place for protection, just like how it plays out in the new chapter.

At this point, Jian Yi’s identity as a mafia boss’s son has been exposed/discovered, and he is now being targeted by opposing enemies. They know Jian Yi is the boss’s weak point, and use him to their advantage. Jian Yi’s father knows how vulnerable his son is to the risks that may come, and probably orders his underlings to bring his son somewhere with further security. Hence the first kidnap.

Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.

There’s one obstacle: Jian Yi’s mom. She probably wishes her son to lead a normal life, and won’t be involved in his father’s shady business or some sort -> Jian Yi not seeing his father for years.

Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.

The promise between Jian Yi’s parents was probably 'To protect their family from any dangers of the mafia business, and not making Jian Yi involved in his father’s business’.

That’s why, when Jian Yi is taken away, his mother insists on letting him stay. Whatever danger there is out there, the father is obliged to protect his son, but not by taking him away from his mom, and ripping him from living a normal life.

Basically, both parents want to protect their son, yet cannot come to terms with their actions.

Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.

Unable to take his son away from his house (=danger), Jian Yi’s father has ordered his underlings to protect him.

Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.

He Cheng receives the direct command, but Qiu is the one who does the job.

Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.
Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.

The situation has been getting tense, as more dangers started to surround Jian Yi.

Jotting Down My Thoughts And Theories On Jian Yi’s Family.

This frame hasn’t been translated yet, and we aren’t certain who is on the other side of the line. From Jian Yi’s reaction, it seems to be a call his mom, saying “Follow brother Qiu , I will find you later”.

His mom has probably realized her son’s situation, and agrees to meet Jian Yi’s father.

I trully believe that when He Tian stayed over at Mo's place for New Year, he ended up accidentally finding his jacket in Mo's bedroom. And ohhhhh the reactions haha!

I imagine Mo would’ve snatched it back from a smug He Tian with a hissed, “Shut up, I didn’t have anywhere else to put it, asshole,” and He Tian would’ve looked at him amusedly and said, “Oh, you want to keep it? By all means.”

CHAPTER 258 ANALYSIS

CHAPTER 258 ANALYSIS

So we see Jian Yi leave to fetch Xiao Hui a drink like the gentlman he is and therefore leave Zhan Zheng Xi and Xiao Hui alone. The air is tense and quiet. Zhan Zheng Xi isn’t a very talkative or loud person. Most of the time he doesn’t speak unless spoken to. He’s an introvert and very much likes to keep to himself except for when it involves Jian Yi (but this doesn’t mean he can’t be sociable). The air doesn’t appear to be awkward for Zhan Zheng Xi. He’s calm, stoic, poker faced as usual; Xiao Hi, on the other hand, is the exact opposite. Xiao Hui’s face is flushed because she is alone with the guy she has a huge crush on, she’s nervous and also slightly uncomfortable because said guy rejected her not too long ago.

During the short but tense silence, she seems to be pondering something. Although nervous, face flushed, a drip of sweat rolling down her cheek, she asks Zhan Zheng Xi if he likes someone.

Now this is interesting because it was obvious from before, when Xiao Hui insulted Jian Yi calling him an abnormal / disgusting gay that Xiao Hui knew / kind of suspected that Jian Yi liked Zhan Zheng Xi. However, it seems that after Zhan Zheng Xi rejecting her, she herself realized that Zhan Zheng Xi had mutual feelings for Jian Yi. It must have been something that has been going through her mind for a while now. We have repeatedly seen how the student body act / react to seeing Zhan Zheng Xi and Jian Yi together, a lot of them stare in shock and/or amazement, it’s pretty obvious to most people there who have seen them interact that their feelings for each other are more than platonic. It didn’t seem to be as obvious to Xiao Hui at first but now it seems as clear as day to her. So she finally begins to wonder about Zheng Xi’s feelings for Jian Yi.

CHAPTER 258 ANALYSIS

Zhan Zheng Xi responds with a rhetorical question. One about the spectrum of human emotions. At first it almost seems as if he is trying to avoid her question with another but he doesn’t. It actually reveals quite a bit. In a conversation I was having with @homolygamous, she said something that I agreed with: “Zheng Xi said that what he feels for Jian Yi is more than just an average person’s definition of liking a person. It’s like he’s saying that what he feels for Jian Yi can’t be explained in simple words / feelings because what is feels for him is far more unfathomably deeper than that”. Zhan Zheng Xi has always been in love with Jian Yi and he is finally, slowly but surely, coming to realize his own feelings. He knows his feelings for Jian Yi are far deeper than just a ‘like’. His feelings are so deep and ardent that he has a hard time explaining it which is actually what he says right after, “It’s hard to explain to you..” when he actually attempts to answer her question, not avoiding it at all. Also notice how Jian Yi was the first and only person he thought of when asked this question. Of course Jian Yi would be the first person to come to his mind. Once again affirming, the person he has feelings for is Jian Yi.

CHAPTER 258 ANALYSIS

At this point, using context clues and simple observation Xiao Hui is now sure that the person he is talking about is Jian Yi. She decides to be upfront about it and directly asks “Is it Jian Yi?” knowing full well the answer. She knows already. She knows the answer is yes. She wouldn’t be crying if she didn’t know his feelings for Jian Yi were mutual. Xiao Hui is crying because she is heartbroken — the guy she likes and is clearly still not over yet already has strong romantic feelings for someone else, for her it’s like a knife twisting inside her, to know that the suspicions she has been having were true. But we can also see that she is also smiling when she asks if its Jian Yi, because ultimately I think she does want happiness for the person she likes even if its not with her; just like when Zheng Xi rejected her, he still wished that someday he hoped she would find someone to make her happy even though he admitted the person for her would not be him. Her smile also seems to be a way to provide support for Zheng Xi, whether intentionally or not, and show that she is okay with it (him having feelings for another man, even though she had said those terrible things to Jian Yi back then).

Zhan Zheng Xi grins just ever so softly at this question. He is grinning at the thought of Jian Yi and his feelings for him. Zheng Xi’s “嗯” = ”en” “hng” “mm” is a very simple affirmation. Zheng Xi doesn’t say an explicit yes but the meaning is still there. He then continues to try and attempt to describe his deep feelings for Jian Yi.

CHAPTER 258 ANALYSIS

[off topic: can you hear me screeching happily in the distance? now back on track] Zhan Zheng Xi emphasizes that Jian Yi is someone important, very important to him. It has always been obvious with his actions, but here we actually hear in Zheng Xi’s own words how significant Jian Yi is to him. This is probably the first instance in which we hear how he truly feels about Jian Yi, we’ve heard other semi-confessions like the “I want to be a grown up faster, become stronger so that I can protect you” but this one is different… especially given that its one he addresses after being directly asked if he has feelings for Jian Yi. Jian Yi has always been the most important person in his life, which isn’t to say that Zhan Zheng Xi doesn’t have other people important in his life (like his family) but Jian Yi more so, there is something about Jian Yi that just can’t be touched. No one can reach the level of significance and importance of Jian Yi to him. Which is why he calls Jian Yi irreplaceable. No one will ever touch his heart and soul like Jian Yi has. They have so much history, they are so far gone for one another, their feelings for the other is overwhelming. Jian Yi will always been his one true love. His one true soulmate.. reminds me a lot of when Old Xian created the illustration with the words “一生一世/for eternity/for life” printed on their shirts. No one can replace Jian Yi. Let how deep that is sink in. No one. Zhanyi’s feelings are mutual and Zheng Xi is finally starting to realize his. This development is so wonderful.

I love your in-depth analyzations. Some of them have completedly changed my point of view of certain characters. By the way, I want to ask something about Xixi. During the 'twist his balls' scene, he is the first person out of the three boys to think that Momo a good person, even though he was directly injured by Momo earlier. This turns out to be true later on. How do you think that Xixi could pinpoint this?

Hey there! You are too kind, anon, gosh ~

I think one of the reasons is that XiXi is one of the more mature characters in the manhua. He doesn’t seem to have any kind of troubled past or old wounds, and he grew up in a healthy family, he’s very serious in contrast to somewhat childish and effervescent JY. So that’s why I think he may not be prone to making hasty assumptions about people. I’m fairly sure that he sees school delinquents for what they are: kids with some kinds of troubles that they are trying to resolve them with violence/rebellious behaviour.

What’s more, despite Momo all trying to act badass and tough, he really gets scared fairly easily. During that ball-twisting scene, he quickly back-pedalled instead of trying to fight or threaten XiXi and JY. He literally tried to buy his way out.

image

And we can see that Momo is also scared when He Tian tried to threaten him to stitch up his mouth, also during dreams sequence when classmates tried to bully him after “ass-shot”. I think XiXi might have caught a whiff that deep-down Mo is scared and is trying way too hard to appear badass so that others won’t hurt him. After all, it was XiXi who gets all like “eh? Are we really going to twist his balls?” and then “these two are scary”. To me, it says that Xixi has a big heart and doesn’t hold grudges, and he also doesn’t indulge in petty revenge.

image

On a side note, I kinda want to see him becoming friends with Momo after JY disappearance. The scene between them in the hospital is both awkward and endearing.

Have a look at Mo Guan Shan’s Earrings

Yup, it’s just as the bold title said, it’s about Mo’s collection of earrings, which appears in the main story or single illustrations.

Since his first appearance in the story, he’s been shown to have his ears pierced, probably to create a badass/delinquent vibe.

There’s been quite some confusion between the earrings too, so I would like to clear up things and give some anaoyzation:

1. He Tian’s earrings (gift to Mo)

Have A Look At Mo Guan Shan’s Earrings
Have A Look At Mo Guan Shan’s Earrings
Have A Look At Mo Guan Shan’s Earrings

One of the iconic symbols of this couple; made its first (official) appearance in the comic when Tian forced him down the bed to shove it in Mo’s earlobe (wait why does this sound so violent…). In an earlier illustration, Mo was shown with a pair similar in design (1st pic).

White around the edge, probably expensive or so, looks charming on Little Mo, etc.

On the reason why Tian gave him those: the first thing that comes to my mind is him showing his posessiveness with Mo (with that bed slam and all), somewhat like marking a terriory. They could probably be just a normal gift too though.

Mo probably sees them as too expensive and decided to keep them safe, instead of eating them outside.

Seeing Mo wrearing them in an eye candy~

2. The pair of black studs

Have A Look At Mo Guan Shan’s Earrings
Have A Look At Mo Guan Shan’s Earrings

Easily mistaken for Tian’s gift, the difference is in the design, as these ones are all black.

They haven’t made appearance during Mo’s middle school days (in main story). For the first and third picture, I will make a wild guess that it happens during the summertime between middle and high school.

He seems to only wear them while at work.

As it has yet to be disclosed whether they are Tian’s or not (and it’s still possible for him to give them to Mo in the main story), we can still hope that they are another of Tian’s gift.

3. Conch Piercing

Worn by the present time Mo on his right ear, it has only made two appearances in the special articles (Christmas and Valentines Massage). It is worn with the black studs.

Another variation of this earring is in the Black&White themed artwork, with a black ring instead.

What if Mo knows that he is gay and just think that He Tian joking around with him?

I doubt that Mo is aware of his sexuality, anon-san. These boys are what, fifteen y.o.? That’s just about the age when teens are discovering their sexuality, and I doubt that Mo can say with 100% certainty that he’s gay or straight or bi or whatever else. “Knowing” that he’s gay would imply that he has experienced attraction to the same sex before, which I doubt is the case. With Mo being a victim of bullying, I think that he probably has troubles feeling drawn to others and developing emotional attachments. That’s just part of how psychological defences might play in his case.

Here’s what he says supposedly about girls that he likes:

image

And here’s how he reacts to He Tian talking about liking him more and more:

image

Not to mention his reaction upon seeing that infamous dikpik. Which was pretty vivid, lol.

So, again, I really doubt that Mo is aware of his sexuality or that it is set in stone. Yet.

As for playing around part, that’s spot on. With Mo being suspicious and constantly on his guard, it’s a likely mentality. Victims of bullying quite often develop some form of paranoia and believe that the world is hostile. He certainly believes that He Tian is bugging him out of boredom, and all of his gestures of kindness are but another ploy. Maybe he thinks that HT gets kicks out of making a street kid do his house chores and etc. Hell, he probably believes that all of HT being nice to him is yet another way for HT to use people (like types of She Li did): get close to Mo, get past his defences, and BAM! backstab. I think OX stressed this during the subway scene, where the girl bumped into HT. After that, even HT noted that Mo looked down.

image

OX used here deliberate framing: we are shown MGS face on purpose. The reason for this is that Momo (against his better judgement) gotten used to HT’s attention, and HT suddenly taking off to chase a girl just reminded him of the fact that he is (in Mo’s perception) just a plaything for a spoiled wealthy brat. That’s why he looks so frustrated and pissed here. I know that a lot of people interpret it as jealousy, but to me, it rather looked like Momo thinking that he’s just a toy. This feeling was exacerbated by the fact that Momo accidentally let it slip that he’ll remember He Tian forever. To someone like Mo, it was akin to showing underbelly.

image

So yep, he does believe that HT is toying around with him, but it doesn’t necessarily carry romantic/sexual subtext.

I hope this answers the question~

So let me point out something. Previously, Jian Yi was kidnapped as we all know. And this is what He Cheng says in chapter 192 to his mom regarding the kidnapper: “His only motive is to meet sir”.

So Let Me Point Out Something. Previously, Jian Yi Was Kidnapped As We All Know. And This Is What He

But right now Brother Qiu immediately assumes that Jian Yi is being targeted (by a sniper, no less). That is to say, that someone doesn’t want to just kidnap Jian Yi but to kill him.

So Let Me Point Out Something. Previously, Jian Yi Was Kidnapped As We All Know. And This Is What He

Whereas previously his father’s enemy objective was to meet Mr.Jian (via kidnapping his son), right now they want to just kill Jian Yi?? It doesn’t make sense at all. But Brother Qiu doesn’t seem to discard such a possibility. Then again, he could be merely overreacting/acting on instincts.

It seems that something changed for the worse in those mafia back-door games.

Whatever Makes You Say That, Dear Anon?

Whatever makes you say that, dear anon?

I’d say that right now Mo is confused and unsure about what’s he’s feeling, but he’s definitely beginning to become conscious of it and it scares him a bit, that’s why he’s so prone to yell that HT pisses him off.

For once, let me say that for Mo it’s practically impossible to quickly develop attraction and feelings for another person. Mo has been bullied since a very tender age and his natural response was to clam up inside of himself. It’s very human and very relatable, and quite typical for the victims of bullying. He has been ostracized. He has been used by people like She Li. Life has let him down and he’s grown weary and distrustful of those around him. More importantly, he learned how to cope by himself and not rely on (or need) anyone else.

To Mo, He Tian is one of those people, who are responsible for the shit happening to the underprivileged like himself. He believes that wealth leads to people abusing it in all the wrong ways. And, let’s be honest, He Tian’s behaviour, in the beginning, did fit this mould. We as readers know that He Tian genuinely wants to help him, but Mo doesn’t. For him, He Tian is just a popular spoiled brat, who bothers him just for the kicks, and Mo has no reason to believe that somebody like that would take a genuine interest in himself. That there’s kindness behind his actions - remember, Mo used to say that HT is fake? The reason for Momo’s disbelief is that he grew up with such a world view, and it’s not easy to shake it off. It’s not easy to overcome trust issues.

Luckily over time that belief started to waver. He Tian was probably the only person in his life who bothered to help him without asking anything in return. Who cared for him (even in a roundabout way). He Tian was ready to do some martyr-like shit for Mo. It didn’t go unnoticed, even if Mo may not fully realize why HT would go so far for a street kid.

If Momo hadn’t liked He Tian, he wouldn’t be constantly blushing at the slightest physical contact. It may be just a physical thing, but it’s definitely there. If Momo didn’t care about HT, he wouldn’t have rushed to his apartment, when HT sent him “bloodied” hand. When He Tian disappeared after sending him to the hospital, Momo wanted to know his whereabouts. Momo wouldn’t have been checking his phone all the time. If he didn’t care, he wouldn’t have held his hand, when HT was having a nightmare.

And lastly, let’s look at one of Mo’s dreams. He’s dreaming that he’s being bullied by a mob again until He Tian appears and saves him. Lots of people pay attention to the butt grab, but the truly important thing here is the fact that Momo actually cries in HT’s shoulder. I think that says more than anything that he actually sees He Tian as a source of his comfort. Would he see somebody he didn’t like this way? I think not.

image

Anyway, I don’t think Momo can rationalize his feelings right now. He definitely doesn’t dislike HT and he’s definitely getting physical reactions. He’s also quite a bit of tsundere and would deny it to the very end, and it would take plenty of time for him to come to terms with what’s he’s feeling.

Whoa, that’s a wall o’text again, srry.
