op turned reblogs off but this post must live. it must live and spread malignantly .
worm cape names really do rock though because the book captures the sheer randomness and at times ridiculousness that cape names would realistically have in a world where there are thousands of capes and everyone has to have their own name. the early capes took all the really good and straightforward superman-esque names like "hero" or "legend," so the later generations have to pick out shit that's actually relevant to their powers for a shot at being unique. one of the most relevant villains in the united states of america is called "skitter," which isn't bad, but also, like, she didn't even pick it, the cops did because she was indecisive. also, while the cops were picking it, they unsuccessfully checked to see if like 5 other different bug-related names were free first. sorry, that username cape name is already taken. and then you have capes with really cool names that would, in any other cape media, be an indicator that they're a super important character. but in worm they're just getting murked left and right, or are at the very least extremely irrelevant. perdition is without question the funniest example of this--sounds like he should be a work's ultimate villain in the same vein as darkseid, actually is a loser teenager who gets sold to one direction. "eleventh hour" is a background cape that gets mentioned one (1) time and has an extremely lame power, but "gray boy" is a Big Fucking Deal. sometimes capes have names that are, unfortunately for them, extremely mockable, and characters in the story do in fact capitalize realistically on this. condolences to renowned superhero Glory Hole! as for the media/pr angle, calling a villain "bitch" isn't very pg-13, so you've got a cape running around calling herself something entirely different than the censored name the cops & media gave her. it's good. It's a good book.
what i wouldn't fucking do for number man's power so I wouldn't have to struggle with this fucking math anymore holy shit

My WORM trailer storyboards for my class!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hey all!! Been a while lol, I still exist, and I'm still insane about worm! Enjoy my 16-shot storyboard I made for class! I plan to maybe animate this someday, let me know what you think!
One of the things I think about a lot in the Worm fanfic part of the community, is that someone once made up the idea that Purity triggered because some minority person mugged her or attacked her.
And a lot of people bought into that, despite:
A.) We know her trigger event. She was trapped after a car crash and nearly starved/dehydrated to death
B.) It’s a classic baby step of white supremacist narrative. “I’m not racist, I just have a traumatic past with X minority group and they made me this way!”
Reminds me of this - at the time - enjoyable series about an male MC who was dealing with the fact that both of his friends (boy and girl) had a crush on him.
Things turned sour for me when the boy was outed as gay to the school and his best friend on the baseball team insults and berates him for trying to act like a “normal kid”.
Later, they friend explains that he’s not homophobic, he’s just dealing with the fact that a family friend assaulted him as a child, so thinks being gay is not normal.
And the narrative supports this!
There’s so many damn things wrong with both scenarios that I don’t even know where to start!
In the context of Worm fandom though, I worry that it’s a sign of how ingrained white supremacist users are in the community, and speaking as someone who’s dealt with kicking them out of forums because they tried to recruit people (or couldn’t hide how much they hated anyone who wasn’t the right shade of light skin), it’s not the only sign.
Not as dramatic as the user who refused to believe Coil was black (because he “talks white”) and threw a tantrum when he was proven wrong, but more insidious for sure because few people in this fandom fact check.
Being a Worm fan is rough because on the one hand I'm always trying to get people to read it but on the other hand I hope to God it never becomes popular
Honestly pokemon is the ideal universe not just because there’s cute animals that are your life companions, but because they have walkable cities and adequate biking infrastructure
