Honestly, I love the idea of a vampire who only drinks blood taken from blood banks and hospitals, because it so beautifully encompasses someone who's more concerned with the vibes of something than the actual impact of it.
Drinking from someone on the street, barring some other condition they may have, isn't likely to kill them unless you gorge yourself. Taking blood packs? There's always a shortage of blood, and having even less of it runs the very real risk of getting someone killed in a way that is wholly out of your control once you've sipped on that blood. Someone you can't assure the innocence or guilt of, if you're the type of person who cares about that.
Despite that, in popular stuff, I often see discussions of drinking from a blood bank being somehow better or preferable, and yeah. No. The only thing it does is make you feel better while doing more harm, because of that degree of removal. You're effectively drinking blood from someone on the cusp of hypovolemic shock, but since it's not straight from the tap, some people seem to think it's better.

When did hikers develop the collective impulse to stack rocks and make obnoxious, useless decorative cairns at every park and river they visit? I don’t remember seeing them as a kid except as trail markers, but now they’re EVERYWHERE. What part of “leave no trace” don’t people understand?
You’re a daycare worker, watching over toddlers, when the imminent end of the world is announced. It becomes increasingly clear none of the kids’ parents are going to show up as the end inches nearer.
Daily reminder, because this shit is so ingrained in global culture it makes me want to SCREAM, that vaginal sex is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE PAINFUL EVER. It is not supposed to bleed! No, not even when it's your "first time". That's not how it works and WHY WOULD IT BE? The vagina is a very cool dude that does this really cool thing: when sexually aroused, the tissue surrounding the vaginal opening as well as the muscle of the canal expands in width & length and lubricates. YES, EVEN "VIRGINS". You've probably heard something along the lines that "it hurts at first but it gets better" – NOPE. The vagina does not magically start functioning after a penis tears it open.
Painful sex is generally due to (other than ignorant partners):
- Minimal or no sexual arousal
- No additional lubrication (vaginal lubrication is great! it is also not always sufficient)
- Low oestrogen or unbalanced hormones (due to young age, health conditions, HRT, stages of menopause)
- Incompatible partners (yes, penises/strap ons can be TOO BIG, don't just pick up the biggest one you can find. look up how long the average aroused vagina is, seriously, then take into account your own anatomy and the position of your cervix at rest & when your vagina is mostly or fully aroused)
- Congenital conditions or a cervix that hangs lower than average
It is so important for people with vaginas to learn their body before having penetrative sex with a partner. PLEASE EXPLORE AND EDUCATE YOURSELF FIRST. Find what works for you. Do NOT put your health and safety in the hands of some idiot.
P.S. Sometimes it just doesn't work and that's okay. Vaginal sex is NOT the height of human experience. There are dozens of other mutually pleasurable sexual experiences to be had!
The singular instance of "gatekeeping" I feel compelled to do is for Star Trek series shorthand. That is, the often three (3) letters we use to shorten a show or films title for quickreference. On occasion this can be up to 4 letters (often for films), or down to 2. Generally though 3 is the most common.
At no time in the 56 years of the franchise have we used "ST_" because it is ridiculously redundant. It also wouldn't make any sense upon a single show existing with the same letter prominently placed. Example, DS9 and Discovery.
This is why it is wholely incorrect to use the initialism "STD" besides the fact that it's a favored term by bigots to defame Discovery. They enjoy associating the show with the initialism for Sexually Transmitted Disease. Partly because they have the mindset of 13 year olds, and partially because of the inherent bigotry of hating the show featuring the most LGBTQIA and POC cast.
The proof is in the pudding though. Enterprise is ENT. No where can you find fans calling it STE. Voyager is VOY (or occasionally VGR). What would you even do with TOS and TNG? STT? STO and STG?
When we needed these shorthand terms, we came up with them and even gave the original series it's own unofficial subtitle as "The Original Series".
So for those in need, here's the proper terms.
Star Trek (the original series): TOS
The Next Generation: TNG
Deep Space 9: DS9
Voyager: VOY or VGR
Enterprise: ENT
Discovery: DSC or DISCO
Picard: PIC
Lower Decks: LD or LDS
Prodigy: PRO
Strange New Worlds: SNW
For the films, it's pretty basic. Take the title and go. Yes, we include Ts for "The" - don't ask me why.
TMP, TWOK, TSFS, TVH, TFF, TUC, GEN, FC, INS, NEM, 09, ID, and Beyond as the only mono word title just gets the whole word. No one knows why lol. I guess BEY feels weird, like calling it BAE. But that's how everyone felt in 2016 so it's what happened.
I tell you all this NOT to make you feel like a lesser fan if you don't know it. On the contrary. I want you to know it because I'm welcoming you in. I want you in my fandom. And this is a piece of important messaging because it's been mutilated by toxic anti-fans. They and they alone embrace the obnoxious contradiction of calling the modern shows "STD" and "STP" etc for their own vile hate.
I want you all to know what true fans have used for decades. So you're not associated with bad people. You can dislike Disco or Picard, or DS9 or TOS. That's up to you. But it's toxic to be accidentally or unknowingly using the wrong terms that a particular nasty and vocal subset who hate the shows because of politics, bigotry, or grifting off hate use.
