Hey, horror community. Hereâs your daily reminder that someone talking about the horror films they like is not an invitation for you to insult their taste and try to get them to watch something they are uncomfortable with.
My limit with gore pretty much ends with the Terrifier franchise. I wonât watch anything gorier than that because I know I probably wouldnât be able to handle it. Some people have even smaller limits and thatâs okay. Itâs completely normal and okay to have boundaries when it comes to what horror movies you want to watch.
If I say, âYeah, my favorite horror movie is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but Iâm a big fan of more modern movies too, like Hereditary or Terrifer.â
That is NOT an invitation for you to try to coax me into trying to watch A Serbian Film or something else thatâs equally as fucked up.
Instead of saying something like, âMan, your movie taste is shit. Thatâs nothing compared to [insert movie here].â
You should say something more like this: âOh, thatâs cool.â
And leave it at that.
Iâm really not interested in watching edge lord horror movies. I have a limit. I know my limit. And guess what? Itâs normal for people to have limits. Just because I like a gorey movie like Terrifier 2 doesnât mean I want to watch something beyond that.
Horror isnât a competition on who can sit through the most gut wrenching stuff.
When I say my favorite horror movie is a 70s slasher, Iâm not looking for an argument where I have to defend myself against some angry guy on the internet.
If youâre reading this (especially if youâre new to horror), remember what I said. Horror isnât a competition. Donât feel pressured to watch something youâre uncomfortable with. Enjoy your slasher films, enjoy your psychological films, your grindhouse films, etc., etc. Just donât feel like you have to expose yourself to something you donât feel comfortable watching.
(Also another note: Peopleâs limits have a lot to do with subject matter as well. I can watch Terrifier but still to this day one of the Saw movies makes me extremely sick, even though it has less gore. Itâs all about context and subject matter. For example, I used to be terrified of the Childâs Play series when I was younger but I had no issue watching Hellraiser when I was younger. )
I ended up having a really interesting conversation with some people at the bus stop today. They were getting out of some sort of âclean and soberâ meeting and had starting saying how they were so bored because they didnât have anything to do, and had to stay at home because all their old friends would pull them back. So I said something like, âSo this is the time to do all the stuff your parents told you they didnât have money/time for!â âWhatcha mean?â âYou know, like when you were five and you REALLY wanted to have that toy or do that thing and you were like, âPlease mom please I gotta have this I gotta go do thisâ and they went âHell no you think Iâm paying for that do you want to goddamn EAT?â â And this light went on in their eyes. The lady is going to go check thrift stores for an Easybake Oven and I told her about Wilton cake decorating classes. The dude is going to Griffith Park and ride horses, because, âI always wanted to be a cowboy, and you canât drink when youâre on a horse âcause youâll fucking die!â Fuck it. This is what being an adult is. Sure itâs bills and work and relationships, but damn it, itâs also time to do the things you LIKE. I signed up for a free class/lecture on Water Gardens. Iâm going. Itâs time.
