Hey, horror community. Here’s your daily reminder that someone talking about the horror films they like is not an invitation for you to insult their taste and try to get them to watch something they are uncomfortable with.

My limit with gore pretty much ends with the Terrifier franchise. I won’t watch anything gorier than that because I know I probably wouldn’t be able to handle it. Some people have even smaller limits and that’s okay. It’s completely normal and okay to have boundaries when it comes to what horror movies you want to watch.

If I say, “Yeah, my favorite horror movie is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I’m a big fan of more modern movies too, like Hereditary or Terrifer.”

That is NOT an invitation for you to try to coax me into trying to watch A Serbian Film or something else that’s equally as fucked up.

Instead of saying something like, “Man, your movie taste is shit. That’s nothing compared to [insert movie here].”

You should say something more like this: “Oh, that’s cool.”

And leave it at that.

I’m really not interested in watching edge lord horror movies. I have a limit. I know my limit. And guess what? It’s normal for people to have limits. Just because I like a gorey movie like Terrifier 2 doesn’t mean I want to watch something beyond that.

Horror isn’t a competition on who can sit through the most gut wrenching stuff.

When I say my favorite horror movie is a 70s slasher, I’m not looking for an argument where I have to defend myself against some angry guy on the internet.

If you’re reading this (especially if you’re new to horror), remember what I said. Horror isn’t a competition. Don’t feel pressured to watch something you’re uncomfortable with. Enjoy your slasher films, enjoy your psychological films, your grindhouse films, etc., etc. Just don’t feel like you have to expose yourself to something you don’t feel comfortable watching.

(Also another note: People’s limits have a lot to do with subject matter as well. I can watch Terrifier but still to this day one of the Saw movies makes me extremely sick, even though it has less gore. It’s all about context and subject matter. For example, I used to be terrified of the Child’s Play series when I was younger but I had no issue watching Hellraiser when I was younger. )

HA! An alt. FNAF movie version of my OC Wanda(Don’t judge me) in Celeste. She’ll be ok, she’ll just have over 2 million deaths under her belt by the halfway point.

The last character you drew/wrote about is now stuck in the last game you played. How screwed are they?

So I see you all are exhausted by streaming services effectively recreating cable. I see you’re all tired of ads. Pirating is a great alternative, but I have another fantastic option for you all!

So I See You All Are Exhausted By Streaming Services Effectively Recreating Cable. I See You’re All

I live in Seattle. And in Seattle we have America’s largest physical media store, Scarecrow Video. They are a non-profit that has pretty much any film or tv show you can imagine. Like, everything. So much so that one of our local cinemas does a program with them called “Unstreamable” where they show a film from Scarecrow’a archive that you can’t access anywhere online. It’s a bit overwhelming to go to their store, which is two levels of every program under the sun.

So I See You All Are Exhausted By Streaming Services Effectively Recreating Cable. I See You’re All

ANYWAY, I bring this up because they recently started a Rent-by-Mail program. It’s pretty similar to what Netflix used to do. You can rent up to six titles (barring their super rare stuff and pornos) and they will ship it to you, then you return it in the included pre-paid envelope.

Why does this rock? Sure, you still have to pay money, BUT you are supporting a non-profit that is dedicated to preserving media instead of some corporation looking for endless profit. They can also expand your palette with their vast selection. And if you have a favorite piece of media, you never have to worry about it disappearing! All their stuff is there in perpetuity.

So this is all to say, now that Scarecrow has expanded their reach beyond the Greater Seattle Area, I implore you to check them out. If you don’t want to rent right now, the could always use donations to keep them afloat.

You can check out their catalogue HERE!

Tired of losing your favorite buttons?

I just stumbled upon this awesome post showing a way to keep pinback buttons from falling off of your backpack/purse/etc. using safety pins.

However, it reminded me of another method that I’ve used since high school, and continue to use to this day:  Rubber earring backs.

You know…these things:

image

I had originally bought a package of them to keep my nose stud from falling out while I slept (it was the “screw” type), but then after losing a button off of my high school backpack, I stumbled upon an even better use for them.

If you place them on the pinback of the button, just ahead of where it closes, the pins can’t slip off.

image
image

It doesn’t matter what size or shape the button is.  Also, I happened to find one that wasn’t closed when I went to take pictures:

image

The earring back basically acts as a rubber stopper.  They’re made specifically to NOT slide off in order to keep earrings in place, so they work just as well keeping buttons in place, even if the buttons aren’t closed.

Considering the backpack that I had in high school…

…I can tell you with complete certainty that rubber earring backs are, bar none, THE best method of making sure you never lose another button ever again.  Also, they’re cheaper than safety pins (which can also pop open, thus allowing the button to slide off) and you won’t have to poke extra holes in whatever you’re putting buttons on.

Or hell, combine the rubber earring backs WITH the safety pins!  Your buttons will be COMPLETELY UNLOSE-ABLE!
