As a small business owner, you have probably desired to know how to reach your consumers. What are they thinking? Why did they choose your product, or a competitors, or decide to just not buy at all. Understanding your consumer’s behavior is not rocket science, but it is scientific.  The definition of consumer behavior is complex enough: “Consumer behavior is the study of the processes involved when individuals or groups select, purchase, use, or dispose of products, services, ideas, or experiences to satisfy needs and desires” (Solomon, 2009, p. 7). Let's Go Fishing...I mean, Let's Go Marketing!

The idea that sales and lead conversion should come fast and easy is a fallacy that has grown with the expanded information and technology age.  Today's society lives fast and wants to have instantaneous results, often without the hard work that goes into it.  The same holds true with many businesses' marketing efforts. For example, with automation software, marketers can send out specific emails to our client base for follow up, broadcast mass emails, and so much more.  Small businesses will create a Facebook page, start using Twitter, blog on occasion, and when they do not get the results desired, they think that those specific mediums are just not for them, or that it is just to hard to keep up with it.

One of the first things my dad taught me about fishing was that you must be patient, persistent, and put the work into it. There were a few spots in 'our lake' that we had success and we would often hit those areas of the coves for the best fishing. However, there were other areas that required different types of bait and methods to get the big fish. Sure, catching bluegill, sunfish, and medium sized bass is fun, but the challenge is to catch the bigger bass or catfish, and to catch them in an area we had not had luck in before.

My advice is to remember this old saying: "If you keep doing what you have been doing, you will keep getting the same results". If you want to attract new customers, increase customer retention, and reduce advertising costs, there may be other marketing methods to use. However, you must be consistent, and you need to know you are using the right tools and have a true understanding of your target market before you go 'fishing in new waters'. If you are looking to fish in a new area, it is always wise to consult with an expert or guide who knows the waters. Using a marketing consultant who can guide you through the 'new' mediums of marketing is also wise. Find someone who will partner with you and work to know your audience's needs and desires.
