heyyyy i know we’re all annoyed about mva but can people stop blaming the japanese fandom for it bc they supposedly dont like the villains?? its getting racist. japanese people are not a monolith. please stop acting like they’re a hivemind who all hate villains when we know the western fandom also hates villains. i’m seeing shit like “fuck the japanese” and my guy do you not realize what you sound like? just stop. be annoyed at the studio all you want but stop blaming japan as a whole.

So does this ending signify we’re getting AFO Vs Endeavor & Hawks next chapter? That seems an…odd choice.

Like, I’ve mentioned more than once how this arc is tragically tensionless because the whole war’s stacked too much in the heroes favour; with the villains VASTLY outnumbered, outgunned, & outplayed. The heroes have a few hundred times the forces they actually need to win this war, and that’s taking Tomura & AFO into account. So long as a proportionate amount of heroes were sent their way with any modicum of pre-planning (both of which seems to be true), this fight is already over.

And that’s true for the other fights too; Bakugou was right for the wrong reasons when he said it was obvious Shoto would beat his brother, and the Spinner & Toga fights are pretty much already decided too, baring an increasingly unlikely upheaval to the whole war. But those fights still work because we really care about the characters involved and their connections.

Not really the case here; these are some of the most polarizing/outright hated characters in the series, and I’d be wondering who to root for if there was any question of who would win, so my initial thoughts seeing this match-up were “if ever there was a fight that could happen off-screen”. I think the only thing I’m interested in with this is seeing what reason Endeavor absolutely had to be here instead of confronting his son.

We don’t make enough jokes about the fact that Tomura has three whole ass adopted father figures fighting for his custody and Dabi can’t even get a hold of his biological father.

not to get too fucking heated but the way even the narrative tries to make twice and his valuable relationships All About Hawks, the way it continues to emphasize how hawks had some positive feelings toward twice (and therefore that makes hawks complicated??), the way it keeps trying to sell the idea that these characters were significant to each other beyond how one manipulated and killed the other on behalf of law enforcement, and how every single hawks stan capitalizes off of this—

it annoys me so fucking much -_- i genuinely hate this character and i hate anyone who finds depth to this shit or acts like this is somehow makes good narrative use of twice.

Dabi’s Definition of “Hero”?

There’s a lot to be said about what Dabi thinks of pro heroes, but one thought has been rattling around in my head for a while now: Dabi’s definition of “hero” seems to hinge very specifically on concepts of selflessness and protection.

Virtually the first thing he does, every single time he meets a new hero, is mock their compulsion to care for others:

His first words to Aizawa:

Dabi’s Definition Of “Hero”?

To Vlad King:

Dabi’s Definition Of “Hero”?

To Snatch:

Dabi’s Definition Of “Hero”?

And then even with Hawks:

Dabi’s Definition Of “Hero”?

I find it equally interesting that the back alley thugs’ threat to kill him on sight was met with immediate violence:

Dabi’s Definition Of “Hero”?

Without knowing whether their quirks might have been useful for the League at all, Dabi solidly writes them all off as “trash”:

Dabi’s Definition Of “Hero”?

Looking back at this arc is hilarious because everyone had Same Face Syndrome but their same face was Overhaul…

Are they garbage because they all had weak quirks and Dabi somehow sensed that–or are they garbage because Dabi’s standard for “worthy” is based on his ingrained personal values, some of which might (ironically) have to do with how people treat others? At the very least, it’s kind of interesting that the generally pleasant Twice recruits an absolute monster, while the only person Dabi’s even close to recruited for the League is a hero.

Anywayyyy, none of the other League members respond to pro heroes with anywhere close to the same degree of consistency (Tomura’s dialogue is all over the place when confronted by All Might and he says almost nothing to Snatch; Toga flat out ignores Aizawa in favor of Deku, etc. etc.), and while Dabi has been in contact with more pro heroes than any other member of the League–so he’s had more opportunities to wax philosophic than the others–I don’t think that this is just Horikoshi making Dabi the League’s mouthpiece.

The fact that this occurs repeatedly, sometimes with almost the exact same dialogue, makes it feel a lot more like a character-establishing hang-up–without prompting, Dabi habitually calls attention to pro heroes’ drive to save others at the cost of themselves. He treats the idea, “heroes are always trying to save others” like a definition or, bizarrely enough, an accusation, and he keeps coming back to that definition–and his clear derision for it–with every hero he meets.

When you lay out all his scenes, Dabi really does seem to be preoccupied by the notion of selflessness and the extent to which pro heroes will go to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

There’s a lot to unpack with this idea and I really don’t have time to think all the ramifications of this through, but I noticed this and have been thinking about it for a while now.

While none of the other villains specifically dwell on it, Dabi keeps coming back to the idea that heroes are supposed to put others first.

Why, it’s almost like he’s got a massive chip on his shoulder about their willingness to save people from villains but not from the cruelty of fellow heroes. You get ONE guess which hero doesn’t get accused of caring more about others than himself…

Just some food for thought!

As I’m sure some may have noticed, Endeavor’s got his arc going on, where after finally realizing how horrible he is and tries to become a better person. But a problem I & many others tend to have resulting from this arc is that lots of folks talk about how Endeavor’s ‘different now’, how he’s changing, and how that makes him so much better than Thief Takami or, of course, Dabi (ugh); and as a result I think it’s important we to address is how…Bojack Horseman-y his attempts at changing have really been up until now. Think of it as in honor of Rei calling him out and hopefully forcing real progress out of him in the future, we’re going over his lack of progress so far.

image

So, let’s look through all his most notable attempts at changing in comparison to what he was doing before that he’s making up for, as well as anything else he’s done that might reflect in some fashion on his redemption:

-We can start with Rei; the woman who he bought, sexually abused for about a decade, psychically abused for 5 more years than that, and then had locked up in a hospital for another 10 years and which she has only just left. He tried to make up for that by having her favorite flowers delivered to her room in the hospital he had her sent to. This is about the average of what we can expect going forward, btw.

-Then there’s Fuyumi & Natsuo, who he deemed failures and neglected so much throughout their childhoods that he appears like a stranger to them, who they know more by the damage he’s done than any actual interactions. To make up for all that, he bought them a house to live away from him and not interact with him anymore, along with their mother when she leaves the hospital. (Not Shoto though, he still interreacts with Endeavor.) This is, unironically, the biggest and most selfless act of atonement he has committed thus far. All down hill from here!

Enji, Rei and Fuyumi are all partial to silly hats, Shouto and Touya both change hair colors and Natsuo’s disguise is that nobody ever gives a shit about him…

something i’ve been turning around in my head for a bit: i think it’s different being disappointed when a character with no clear motivation or set of values takes a turn you personally didn’t want, versus when a character who DOES have a clear, established motivation and values has those aspects abandoned. there were so many people who were upset with the direction hox’s character took, saying it wasn’t right for him and he should’ve stayed with the LOV, but honestly hox betraying them was always a possibility and there was no established characterization that ever implied he wouldn’t side with the heroes. just because there was a lot of fanon and theories about it doesn’t mean hori “took” something from y’all or wrote badly just because you didn’t like it.

there’s more argument to be made that, for example, deku’s characterization is less consistent and the writing might be weaker with him. deku IS someone with more-or-less established motivations and values, who tells off shouto’s abuser early on but in the late series only seems to take a conciliatory approach to the todorokis’ situation. there’s at least a case to be made that deku turned way too much from his earlier stance on the issue and it felt manipulated in order to support the abuser’s redemption.

these two cases are just not the same.
