dunno if I should call this a headcanon or a theory and I know Horikoshi just went with what looked cool but the more I think about Dabi's initial design when he came to the League in the context of what we learned about him and what we saw happen to him during the second war, the less sense it makes that his body was already in that state.
according to the anime, he was learning by watching Endeavor's videos online. before Sekoto, he wasn't learning from any source at all and went about his training intuitively, but after Sekoto I strongly doubt he would be actively practicing his quirk, for a multitude of reasons. his body was still healing from the skin transplantation, the trauma associated with accidentally burning himself to death, plainly not having a place to train a fire quirk, which tend to be flashy and to use your quirk in public, having a provisional license is required, otherwise he risks getting arrested. he did a very good job staying out of the public's eye for the 7 years since he escaped AFO, who was also implied to be unaware of Touya surviving for so long.
so as far as we know, all he did for those 7 years is lay low and be very online. which makes his remark to Spinner hilarious ngl, at least Spinner sprung up to action as soon as he saw something that had inspired him, while Dabi had spent 7 whole years sitting on his very personal trauma and not going to therapy.
when Giran brings him to Shigaraki, he doesn't share any information about Dabi save for him being very invested in Stain's ideology. no criminal records, maybe, but not even a word of his absurdly strong quirk? no mentions of arson at all? they did discuss Toga making it to the news, so Dabi being left out like that was a bit weird in the context of the conversation, like him seeking out Stain's contacts was enough reason to let him join the League. he won't be useful to you, Shigaraki, but he's got the spirit. please take him in, he has nowhere else to go?
if you really look at the way Dabi uses his quirk until MVA, it's noticeable how he seems to have no idea what he is doing. there's no technique, no finesse to his moves, just throwing out huge blasts of fire with his hands and hoping for the threat to leave him alone.
when Shigaraki attacked him (fully provoked) his reaction was too slow to summon any flames at all, and if it weren't for Kurogiri, that would have been it for Dabi.
When he is fighting Geten and starts going beyond his limit, he scares himself with the increased fire output. because, yup, overusing his quirk by accident was the source of his trauma.
the databook puts his technique as the weakest of his stats. his power is huge and eventually allowed him to become the strongest fire quirk user in the BNHA universe, but his technique was extremely lacking.
all of the above just doesn't paint the picture of someone who has been consistently mastering his quirk for 7 years. rather, it gives the picture of someone who had just started using his quirk for the first time in years, having background training from his childhood.
it's not even that Dabi isn't hardworking as hell or doesn't have the potential to be trained, because he's a complete opposite. continuously going beyond his limit, despite his own body getting in his way, mastering Enji and Shouto's complicated techniques they have worked for weeks/months/years on in a matter of minutes after just observing it. surely, he has been watching Enji and learning the way his father uses his quirk for years, but putting theory to practice? i doubt he even had the chance, before joining LOV.
he had to wait, because starting to actively use his quirk sets the clock into motion, counting down the time he has left. he is like a candle, destroying himself with his fire, until nothing is left at all. he had to make sure his plan of revenge will have a chance to succeed before fully committing to the 'Dabi' route, a slow and agonizing process of cremating himself by continuously using his quirk. because when he really starts using his quirk for long stretches of time? this is what happens to him.
to conclude this post, I know why the final design was chosen (because it's cool as fuck) but after analyzing the crucial points of Touya's story and his relationship with his quirk, I really think him joining the League with post-coma design would have made more sense. once he had started really using his quirk, his body would slowly degrade to the state Dabi's was in, because his fire literally melts his skin. but his body already having 40% surface third degree burns, when he didn't even use his quirk the entire time, perfectly holding up up until the first war arc and then quickly starting to burn down? idk, seems a bit inconsistent?..
anyway, i love the concept of Dabi's skin slowly and inevitably burning down after he had joined the League. him losing more and more skin until there's barely anything left, when he reveals himself to his father and is bitter at the lack of recognition, because burning himself to the point of being unrecognizable was one of the many sacrifices he had made to be finally seen by Endeavor.
also, more of this. because this was bittersweet as hell
Something Iām finding pretty weird, and maybe a bit frustrating, in the fandom lately is people extrapolating one League memberās problems to exist in the rest as well; especially Dabiās suicidal ideation as of late.
āThe League are all self-destructive and endanger eachotherā No thatās just Dabi. āThe villains need to be given a reason to live forā No thatās just Dabi. Shigaraki already has that. Toga especially already has that. Dabiās the only one who wants to die.
Seriously, it actually feels silly to see claims that Toga wants to die when she has been telling us about her want to live despite the world being so incompatible to her since about the moment we met her, and fighting tooth and nail for her life for just as long. She could not be more unlike Dabi in this regard. Her entire character motive is to live, and there are people who think sheās suicidal. Okay. I donāt know what to do with that information beside be baffled by it.
He looks like a volleyball
Real talk what are your hopes for your favorite villains?
wow sooooooo glad you asked because i have a LOT of strong thoughts but unfortunately my hopes and dreams do not line up with what i actually think is gonna happen. but for like absolutely bare minimum my hopes are just like. "alive". my second bare minimum is that i really need a bnha shippuden. most secret revered hope is āvigilante endgameā.
firstly obviously i would like for mr compress to no longer be in jail somehow but if i can't have that then he SHOULD be a hannibal lecter-lite to best jeanist and the majority of their conversations revolve around bondage innuendo. i believe i have expressed this desire before but i still stand by it. anyways i just wanna learn his fuckin full backstory man horikoshi PROMISED me personally. anyways in bnha shippuden whoever is left of the villains SHALL bust compress out and best jeanist will erotically hunt him down but never truly be able to put him back behind bars. it's all very heart-wrenching trust me.
trumpet is gonna start a political riot in order to distract the guards from how geten is very carefully and delicately using whatever water is in the prison and like burst the whole thing open (shamelessly stealing this from @stillness-in-green because it's only justice) and they get rikiya the fuck out of there and i haven't like, figured out how much further i can go with this outside of them like meeting up with the remains of the league but in bnha shippuden they will be used to significantly have the students question their society now that everything's been rocked to pieces and the MLA remainders are both figuring how to live according to their philosophy in the new world while also stepping around the fact. rikiya is constantly like side-stepping the growing implications that he was kind of groomed in a cult which is easy cuz trumpet's sitting there like "everything is FINE i will take CARE OF YOU because you are my my beloved my dear leader. no we arenāt going to talk to shigaraki right now he has stuff and things letās just hang out the two of us. geten is there watching trumpet suspiciously and prepared to protect rikiyaās virtue.
muscular appears again cuz jail SUCKS finally gets to reveal that he was raised in a baby-fighting ring. he claims itās no big deal but everyone is like āoh my god iām really sorry that happened to you no one should be raised in a baby-fighting ringā. he realises that yeah. YEAH. being raised in a baby-fighting ring was actually kind of fucked up. he cries, and heās actually a really gorgeous crier? like the kind of crying that makes you wanna cradle a person. this does nothing about his love for murder but at least i was right.
moonfish gets to eat a guy <3 straight up unhinges his jaw and swallows someone whole. no one knew he could do that.
okay toga this is gonna be complicated because the manga isn't gonna have the space for it but i've been OBSESSED with comparing power csm and toga and their relationship to blood as they use it as a means, symbol, and substitute for relationships, and a big thing for showing how deeply power cared about denji is that she let denji drink from her and later straight up gave him her blood so she could survive yeah?? so i'm still turning over in my head how to get from toga embracing herself and her desires, but also still very much on the murder train, and how to get her off the murder train without devaluing who she is as a person, but i would LOVE for her to get to the point where just like how twice gave her an emergency blood transfusion in MVA, she's like standing over a bleeding out uraraka or something and she goes. damn this actually sucks. but because i am a brilliant person, like my beloved friend twice, i will also know how to perform a blood transfusion. bc one hell of a twist on how toga experiences love by taking blood would culminate in her giving it right?? i have a funnier riff on this that i shared elsewhere but i shall be coy. but at some point uraraka manages to somehow PROVE that she has genuinely thought about toga and is willing to reach out more and toga tries rejecting it cuz sheās no hollaback girl but it twigs something in the back of her mind, and then bam urarakaās life is in her hands, and itās gonna be the most poignant bloodletting of all time.
okay you asked favourite villains and iām a known dabi h8er insomuch as i am known but i WANNA say before i move onto the most important endgame hopes. you know that one tumblr post about how hamsters are born seeing a thread and they stubbornly follow it straight to their deaths. thatās dabi i think heās gonna straight up die like heās barrelling so hard at it. but CRUCIALLY, i think it will happen one of two ways. a) shouto manages to break through to him and soften that hatred and vengeance inside of him but unfortunately the power of love does not have a lot of medicinal benefits in this universe compared to the power of hatred, so dabi expires. or b) just as dabi is gonna land the killing blow on his little brother, the GHOSTS OF THE MURDERED ORPHAN CHILDREN suddenly appear to finally get their revenge. and they like drag him into hell or something. horikoshi is gonna include recordings of like this ghostly, childish rattling going āsleeeeeepyhead.............weāve been waiting for you........ā and itās gonna be so good. if iām feeling kindly iād say that skeptic somehow manages to rescue dabiās lil charcoalād brain and stick it in a robot (i know skeptic can do this) and they have mediocre but ultimately okay sex for the rest of their lives.
now that iāve given dabi his pity fuck we gotta move onto the real important fellas.
okay shigaraki is even MORE complicated because horikoshi has refused to let shigaraki speak to anyone from the league since chapter 233 and i want them to be crucial in shigarakiās endgame and downplay deku as much as possible, because deku is a bad character, and a horrible foil for shigaraki. also obviously my shigaraki endgame has to be closely tied into spinnerās endgame because spinner is the most special fella in the entire world.
problem is that actually thinking of spinner makes me so anxious that i feel nauseous, like this is rvb13Ā āis locus gonna fuckin dieā levels of anxiety but stretched out tortuously. i know i wonāt get what i want i never do but itād be SUCH a missed opportunity. and also if i speak my hopes and dreams out they wonāt happen and iām literally paranoid, like superstitious about it. itās so clear in my mind but if i donāt get it iāll throw a fuckin fit. okay breaking it down into high level points.
in dekuās journey to the shigaraki death trap fight he encounters spinner, words are exchanged, spinner says something pings dekuās hero sense and heās torn between rushing to the fight, or taking this avenue, this barest sliver of a chance, that interacting with someone who cares about shigaraki might be crucial to his whole āsavingā thing. conversation helps spinner figure some things out, modifying his course and his resolution. deku ends up overusing his quirks and falls into the ocean to drown.
also spinner is on his way to lift kurogiri from jail. this is to make coordinating placements easier. also weāll get a moment where kurogiri fights between his programming, loyalty to AFO and protection of shigaraki blah blah blah, spinnerās begging and resolution is crucial helping kurogiri be like āyeah tomura is a grubby lil weirdo whoās only ever rude to me but this spinner guy. heās really something huh.ā i didnāt discuss my kurogiri endgame but kurogiriās defense of shigaraki when they arrive on the battle scene causes aizawa to waver and thatās gonna be one of the clinchers in The Escape.
spinaraki completely fuckin steals that big kiribaku moment from the kamino arc. on the surface level kiribakus and spinarakis become allies but thereās friction cuz the kiribakus have a bit more longevity to their name, but the spinarakis get to be of Endgame Significance and also canāt be ignored for the rest of the manga cuz that was the rest of the manga. however, I will devoutly defend the honour of the kiribakus cuz i have like one beloved kiribaku mutual. i can be an ambassador.
okay so crucially for shigarakiās plot. like obviously being driven entirely by anger and hatred only sticks him further into AFOās control, an obvious allegory for the impact of abuse and grooming, and i maintain that shigarakiās endgame (along with the heroes taking like five seconds to take shigarakiās grievances seriously) is to buffer that anger and hatred and giving him a drive with something else. ie, realizing that he doesnāt hate the league, is actually really okay with them, and wants more for them than dying or being in jail. and thatās the wiggle room.
anyways so thereās an emotional moment, spinner and kurogiri get shigaraki the hell out of the death trap, they take a moment to pick up toga, maybe they stop by dabi but dabiās being eaten by ghost orphans and they decide to respect his personal business. as a prelude to this point thereās been a lot of personal realizations and shake ups about how the league really do want to Live but maybe the murder terrorist train isnāt like, an awesome path to be on.
bnha shippuden involves a lot of the league confronting themselves and their actions while still not succumbing to being absorbed by Society and slowly, accidentally stumbling their way into vigilantism. spinner and shigaraki will get a really smooshy and angsty plotline here but again, i am coy.
also. six will turn out to be alive. he and koichi? just chilling in hiding the entire time. they actually intended to join the endgame battle but turns out, they both suck at directions! i have secret fantasies here but itās like half a step away from me creating OCs related to AFOās secret numbers and iām too shy for that.
last but not least AFO gets turned into a child and heās just the sweetest little thing. i stole this one from @codenamesazanka who was joking in a tangential discussion but iām taking it dead fuckin serious now <3
Iām a little confused, what does rei telling shouto about rejecting bloodlines have to do with himura mutant phobia?
(Re: a comment I made about Shouto's Sports Festival flashback in my post on Chapter 387.)
Itās not a direct correlation!Ā I was pointing out that Rei has early dialogue that can potentially be read as foreshadowing for the familial issues discussed by Geten 350 chapters later.Ā Basically, that Horikoshi might have chosen to specifically frame the conversation in terms of bloodlineāmangling an explanation of All Mightās catchphrase to do so*ābecause he was already aware that fears about the sorts of things one can inherit via bloodline were significant to the characters in the scene.
Shouto is afraid of inheriting his fatherās willingness to hurt Rei, but what sort of fear of bloodline inheritance has Rei already faced in her own history such that she can now reassure Shouto that blood is not binding?Ā It could simply be a generic assurance, not connected to Reiās history at all, but what if it isnāt?
What if Rei is able to reassure her son that one isnāt bound to oneās bloodline because she already has personal experience with the consequences of excessive regard for bloodline?Ā And given that sheād later burn Shouto out of fear of his resemblance to Enji, did she really even believe it at the time, or is it the same as when she tried to get Touya to change course and he lashed out at her for lecturing him about choices, save that, unlike Touya, Shouto was young and attached enough to believe her?
To look at it another way, when Horikoshi was brainstorming the Todoroki familyās general situation, he would have had to figure out Endeavorās obsession and the forms it tookāthe attempts to wrangle genetics, the failures that came before the success, the spiral into abuseāas well as at least the broad strokes of the ways Enjiās kids and wife reacted to it.Ā Itās entirely possible that all Horikoshi originally had figured out about Rei was āmentally fragile because of the abuse; gets institutionalized after she burns Shouto,ā but heās on the record as thinking a lot about the lives of his minor characters and thereās plenty about Rei that begs further thought.
For example, why would the woman with the ice powers Enji sought agree to the marriage?Ā Why would she stay in the marriage even after it turned sour?Ā Was it all out of love?Ā Wouldnāt it be a bit convenient that Enji could find a woman who just loved him that much given his unabashed ulterior motives?Ā Further, Rei was open to her mother about the dire straits she was ināwhy wouldnāt her mother step in, call child protective services, tell her own husband, do anything?Ā Reiās family being traditionalists, with old-fashioned ideas about marriage and commitment, works to answer the question.Ā Then, on top of being traditionalist, Reiās family needing the financial resources Enji brings to the table bolsters that answer even further.
The questions that follow logically from that scenario are what tradition looks like in the world Horikoshiās created, and why Reiās family need money?Ā If they were an old-money family but lost their fortunes, what caused that?Ā Geten provides the reader with the answers, but itās not impossible that Horikoshiās known them from the start.Ā If thatās the case, then even Reiās earliest lines in the series can be read as speaking in light of her family history, and that family history is intimately entwined with heteromorphobia.
It's somewhat reachy, I acknowledge, but I hope that explains my thought process a little better? Thanks for the ask!
* The conversation on TV is so weird.Ā What in godās name does self-love and the DNA inheritance of quirks have to do with All Mightās, āI AM HERE!ā catchphrase?Ā Thatās nonsense, counter to everything else heās ever said about the meaning of the phrase, which is supposed to be both reassurance to those in danger and threat to those endangering.
Itās an awkward and baldly contradictory contortion of a response that, so far as I can tell, serves no real purpose save to suggest a question from the interviewer that upset Shouto because it implied that his blood doomed him to grow up like his father, and give Rei a chance to answer in the same framework.Ā What question could the interviewer possibly have asked that would have both given Shouto that impression and prompted All Might to respond, āYes, quirks are naturally passed from parent to child.Ā However, thatās not the only thing that matters.Ā Itās not just blood tiesā¦Ā Instead, one must recognize and appreciate oneself! Ā Thatās what I mean when I say, āI am here!āā
We donāt make enough jokes about the fact that Tomura has three whole ass adopted father figures fighting for his custody and Dabi canāt even get a hold of his biological father.
