@Regrann from @history - On #ThisDayinHistory 1949, after three-year battle to win both players and fans, National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed by the merger of two previous leagues. Representatives from the two leagues met in New York’s Empire State Building to finalize the merger. Maurice Podoloff was elected head of the new league, made up of 17 teams that represented both small towns and large cities across the country. Through the 1950s, the number of teams dwindled, along with fan support, and by the 1954-55 season, only eight teams remained. That year, the league transformed the game with the creation of the 24-second clock, making play faster-paced and more fun to watch. Fans returned, and the league, now financially solvent, expanded throughout the 1960s and 70s. Today, the NBA has 30 franchises and attracts players—and millions of fans—from countries around the world. Pictured here is the last smarter appearance of Wilt Chamberlain. #NBA #basketball

The image was shared widely online, with some of those who did so appearing to think it was made that day.⠀ ⠀ In the uncomfortable haze of live breaking news it became the latest in a long line of photographs to be grabbed and shared without credit or context. Social networks are now minefields for information-gatherers. Photographers lose control of their work while those who rip and share it can reap the rewards: retweets, likes, followers. Images are separated from their intended meaning, and can even take on a new one. Her spirit and determination helped lead us into a new era in space exploration, and for that we are grateful. Once a "human computer", she famously calculated the flight trajectory for Alan Shepard, the first American in space. And when we began to use electronic computers for calculations, astronaut John Glenn said that he’d trust the computers only after Johnson personally checked the math. Her calculations proved as critical to the success of the Apollo Moon landing program and the start of the Space Shuttle program, as they did to those first steps on the country's journey into space.
