Is this the same show where I guy almost lost is finger?

OK. OKAY. YOU GUYS.

I am LOVING the fucking chocolate guy’s netflix show! It’s FANTASTIC! Anf hold on to your fucking boots y’all cause it’s actually not what I was expecting at all!

OK. OKAY. YOU GUYS.

Do you miss the gentleness of the Great British Bake-Off? THIS SHOW IS SO KIND AND GENTLE! For fuck’s sake, NO ONE GETS KICKED OFF! No. No, Listen to this! When they lose the first challenge (a pastry one), the punishment is… They get private lessons with Amaury to help improve what brought their scores down instead of competing in the second chocolate challenge.

When the one black lady contestant messed up the first challenge I was super bummed and like, OF COURSE. But NO. She got lessons! She struggled! she worked hard! and she won a later challenge! GROWTH MY DUDES! They are there TO LEARN and GROW and Maybe Win a Big Prize!

They ALL get to stay and keep doing their best! and at the end the one who did the best overall is the one who gets the money prize!

OK. OKAY. YOU GUYS.

Look at this lovely line up! they make COOL LOOKING FANCY THINGS! Amaury tells us how he does some of the fancy things he does! They OFFER TO HELP EACH OTHER WHEN THEY FINISH EARLY AND GET PROPS FOR THAT! (not taunted for not using their own time better). The set up even kinda makes the one who is like, I’m in it to win it, is the villain and doing bad. The rest who are like, I’m here to learn and grow and maybe make friends! AUGH YOU GUYS!

Amaury is soft spoken and kind, and has a pretty voice and a pretty smile and that’s nice to watch too. The chefs are talented and artistic and they actually give the THE TIME to make nice things! It’s not “Wham out some half-assed garbage in 2 hours so we can shotgun the production and laugh at your garbage” like most cooking shows nowadays. NO! 14 hour challenges! They’re still hard, but they get to actually make cool stuff! fancy stuff! Stuff I want to look at and cheer for them!

The episodes average 38 min and aren’t a huge time commitment, the first episode being the longest one, and there are only 8 total so it’s not like you have to really get in for the long haul. \

WATCH IT! Pump it! we need more cooking shows like this and less that are sad and mean!

I went to University in the middle of a large city. There were was a lot of tension between the residents who lived right next to the campus and the students as well as the school as a whole.

Landlords were buying up peoples homes and converting them into apartments to rent out to the student population, displacing families and rapidly changing the make up of the area.

Students called the residents ‘the locals’, or, when they were complaining about how, ‘they just didn’t get college culture’, ‘the natives’. Yikes. Add on the residents were majority black and the students were majority white and it’s a Big Ol’ Fucking Yikes.

Moved to the suburbs and my dad was encouraging me to talk to the people I saw while walking the block and to in general ‘go native’. Oh boy that took me aback.

But even outside of the racial and economic tensions in an area, each neighborhood has it’s own little culture.

If you want to know anything about the area you go to my next door neighbor. He’s lived here 52 year and can tell you how long ago a project in your house was completed and if he thinks the people who did it would have done a good job.

If you lost your dog there’s a woman on our block who is always willing to help you out.

We have a block wide yard sale every other year.

Hey I'm sort of curious. I haven't read the book, but I'm a fan of the show and was genuinely disappointed that the phrase "going Native" had an exclusively negative connotation when I watched. Idk if this occurred to you or not, but that's pretty blatant racism. It's especially tone deaf considering this is a show about angels and demons - which have been a tool to commit genocide against us for upwards of 500 years.

Why not just use "human"? It's accurate and doesn't frame an entire demographic as inherently bad or undesireable.

Not trying to garner any ill will, it just rlly bummed me out bc I'm Native and it's an identity I wear with great pride bc ppl have tried countless times to rip it away from me. To see it treated with such disdain was very hurtful.

I understand your concerns, and do not wish to minimise them, or your hurt. Obviously the phrase has colonial roots. However, it's a lower case N, and isn't intended to talk about Native Americans. When the angels talk about Aziraphale "going native", this is the meaning they are using. It may be negative for the grumpy angels, but it's positive for humanity and for Aziraphale and Crowley.

From Mirriam Webster online:

go native

idiom

: to start to behave or live like the local people

After a few weeks, she was comfortable enough to go native and wear shorts to work.

Ooohhhh this explains why I can cook when I have a caregiver with me but wont when I'm alone.

I'm showing thee caregiver how to prepare the things I like to eat for the days when I can't get out of bed

1. a couple months ago a publicist invited me to a concert and i accepted her invite and she said she’d add my name to the guest list. the night of the concert i was feeling a little tired and not entirely up for walking all the way to the venue and standing around listening to a band i’d never heard of. but then, as i was making dinner, i thought, “why don’t you pretend this is a date night with bill hader?” i realize this is an insane person thing to think. i do often go to concerts with friends; i am not in the habit of pretending bill hader is accompanying me to concerts. but that night i did put on the band’s album and pretend that bill hader was dancing around the kitchen with me while i cooked. and then i pretended that bill hader threw his arm around me on the walk to the venue and walked slower than usual because he’s taller and his paces are longer than mine. then i got to the venue. and i told the lady in the ticket booth that i was on the guest list. and i gave her my name. and she handed me two tickets, and she said, “here, for you and your plus one.” i was all alone in front of the box office. there was no one else around. at no point leading up to this had the publicist mentioned giving me a plus one. i laughed a little to myself at the idea of Imaginary Bill Hader being given his own ticket and then i went inside.

2. on the way home from acting class tonight, a long walk in the cold, i came upon a diner lit in warm golden hues, and i hadn’t eaten all day, and it looked irresistible, so i went inside. “for one,” i said, and the hostess said, “do you want to eat at the bar?” and i said, “no thanks, could i sit at a table?” and i was ushered to a table for two. it was a pretty busy night and i was kind of self-conscious about being the only person eating alone so i was like, “well okay i’ll just imagine i’m on a date with bill hader again haha.” and so i sat there and enjoyed some very good sweet potato ravioli with chestnut-cream sauce, and what was perhaps the best cheesecake i’d ever eaten in my life, all the while imagining bill hader seated in the empty chair across from me. and then at the end of the meal, my waitress came and cleared away my dessert plate, and she looked at me, and then she looked at the empty chair, and then she looked back at me, and then she said, “are you paying separate or together?” again, the other seat was empty. i had been sitting at this table fully by myself for the entire duration of the meal. the waitress had come by the table perhaps five or six times over the course of the hour, seeing me completely alone. and i said, “sorry?” and she said, “separate or together?” and i said, “…together?” and she said, “cool, do you need the machine?” and i said, “yes” and she brought the machine over and i paid, because my dinner companion, despite apparently being visible to my waitress, was imaginary bill hader.

The first time I ever got drunk I pulled up the last scene of Twelfth Night on my phone and passionately recited it, voicing all the characters. And apparently this was totally unprompted. There was a lull in the conversation and I just went for it.

I used to have the entirety of Queen Mab memorized but I’m still salty over being harshly graded for that school project and because

“And I, most jocund, apt, and willingly, / To do you rest a thousand deaths would die.”

“Where goes Cesario? / After him I love / More than I love these eyes, more than my life, / More by all mores than e’er I shall love wife“

Is the sexist SEXY-EST thing in all of Shakespeare.

Um no offense but why doesn’t anyone memorize passages from books and then recite them aloud for everyone at parties anymore.

As a disabled person who uses a screen reader

🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕

There are a million accessibility tools already out there which do the same thing this app claims it would. And these tools do so without AI and without scrapping the works of non consenting creators.

This person is just using disabled people as an excuse to be an asshole.

Fandom friends, we have won the battle (although we definitely did not win the war).

Yesterday, I wrote this post about lore.fm, an AI scraping app that was being marketed as an accessibility tool. Now, the person that has been promoting this app decided, in the light of plenty of backlash, to backtrack and pull it down, as they "feel uncomfortable" with how authors reacted to it.

Of this video, it's very important to highlight a couple of things:

the video is 3 long minutes of guilt-tripping: she keeps repeating that her (and her team, whose existence wasn't disclosed until yesterday: this app was marketed as being a sole woman's pet project) wanted to do good and create an accessibility tool. This comes with the underlying layer that all the authors who rightfully decided to defend their creations are ableist and in the wrong. It's a manipulation tactic;

there is no acknowledgement of the fact that the app was created by a team that specifically works to create apps that generate AI stories;

there is no explanation as to where the money to fund this app is coming from, and we all know that, when you're not paying for the product, you are the product;

this is backtracking, not genuine conversation: since the other day, the videos promoting this app went viral on r/Ao3, and plenty of people began contacting team@lore.fm to ask for their works to not be included. Then, the news spread on Tumblr too. They originally thought they could get away with "legally" stealing as much material as possible, and had to cut the project short because authors were doing everything in their power to stop them. The decision to take the app off for "reassessment" doesn't come from the goodness of their hearts.

At this point of the conversation, I think it's clear that the entirety of the project was relying on the perceived naïveté of fanfic readers and writers, who are oftentimes seen and stereotyped as being silly teens and not adults with real jobs and real knowledge of the law. When they saw dozens, if not hundreds, of authors contacting them to ask their works to not be featured, some of them threatening legal consequences, they had no other choice but to backtrack.

For now, the issue is closed, but don't think it'll be forever. Know your rights, even if you're "just" a fic author, and defend yourself and your works too from these scummy companies that see us as nothing but machines that churn out material for them to steal and profit off of with no consequences.

I think Joy did a great job explaining but I’d like to chime in.

I was bullied a lot in school, from Elementary til High School graduation, by both my teachers and peers.

I got into physical fights, I was iced out, called names, sexually harassed. But also my bullies tried to turn the teachers -- who already saw me as a dumb, difficult, non-compliant student -- against me by saying I was the one being a bully.

I don’t recall how often it actually worked. One memorable time the boys accused me of scratching them on purpose playing capture the flag and I had to see the principle. They targeted me because I was the only girl who actually liked to play the game. I sweaty and gross and was sneered at for it. But I was also really good. The best kids told me to stop trying because I’d never be as good as them.

I’m not sure if I was able to point this out to the principle or if there was anything else sus. I had my nails inspected and was told I could cut them shorter / more often but that I didn’t have to, the length they were was fine.

I see so, so, so much of the internet as an extension of this. Argument bait, the hate terms which were the precursor to transmisandry got, of course, the hate transmisandry is currently getting, there’s more but I’m drawing a blank. It can get way, way worse than switching bully and offender.

This is the building blocks to worse behavior. And I completely understand why Joy would want to shut it down before it can even get a start.

Ultimately, dog piling doesn’t do anything. We can support / commiserate with Joy or anyone else dealing with bullshit without having to know the identity of a meaningless stranger.

I'm not going to reply publicly because I'd inevitably get accused of bullying for failing to protect the sender from the consequences of their actions when my followers got a hold of them.

But if you're going to send me a message along the lines of "I like your novel, but I ran it through a filter, and you use too many adverbs, you should consider using less" I hope you know I'm killing you with my mind.

Just mentally holding you underwater until the thrashing stops.

Hope that helps.

I absolutely can not stress how horrific this was and also how extremely bizarre for this type of show.

The medic: Like on a scale of one to ten?

Thiago: It probably hit the bone.

The medic: Ah.

He seriously looks like he’s about to cry when the EMT says he can’t stop the bleeding.

Someone in a black chef’s uniform is sitting next to him, holding his glass of water, saying, “Don’t worry about your team, this is the priority. You gotta keep your finger, okay?”

Then he does start crying and we get some really intense close ups.

He tells his teammates what’s going on, he walks up (crying) and just says, “bad”. And a teammate says, “Like, you have to go, bad?” and that’s when we get, “It’s like... dangling”. I just really feel like the show runners could have had someone else let his teammates know what’s going on.

Chocolate guy walks him out saying, “Someone is going to take you to the hospital, okay?” Like set aside the fact that they could have absolutely paused the challenge or restarted it later, but if they’re not going to do that I think there’s something more kind and supportive he could have said.

One of his other team members is real choked up, but they only show her describing that the chocolate sculpture was Thiago’s idea. It cuts away and then cuts back to them and they say, “My heart just sank”. I’m fairly certain the original context didn’t have to do with not knowing how to continue the sculpture without Thiago.

Chocolate guy informs the rest of Thiago’s team that they don’t know how long he will be gone and that the two of them can choose between two other people to help them continue.

The music suddenly switches to something upbeat and the other team member has a voice over that goes, “And I’m like, ‘thank god!’“ and she laughs. I did not like that moment.

The music continues to be so inappropriate as the substitute jumps in.

The show returns to usual.

Oh no! Another team’s chocolate has set! The person in charge of said pot of chocolate reacts way less calmly to this predicament than Thiago did to cutting his finger.

Thiago comes back at the start of the next episode once the competition is over. Chocolate guy asks him, “You still have motion? You still have nerves?” And Thiago goes, “yup, yup” and then Chocolate guy says, “You’re lucky, you have to be a little crazy to be a chef right?”

I’m a huge fan of blown away and I can not imagine anything similar happening on that show. Glass blowing is so very dangerous and the people on the show have so much experience that I think they would call out nonsense like this.

I also wonder how much Corning Glass, who provides a first place prize, would get a say in the cut of an episode. I don’t think they would want to be associated with a show where the show runner, an expert in the field, would brush off a serious injury with something like, “you have to be a little crazy to be a glass blower, right?”

every time I see the tiktok chocolate guy I remember watching his cooking competition, which had absolutely life changing career opportunities for the winners, where one contestant almost cut his finger off during a timed round and was literally forced to choose between keeping his finger by going to the emergency room and losing points, or losing his finger to try and finish the round while covered in blood for a chance at the grand prize. he lost points for going to the emergency room. after he bled everywhere and left to go get his finger reattached, the show runners refused to stop the timed round even though all the contestants were clearly horrified

Here Is The Avatar I Designed And Illustrated For @theblindadventures

Here is the avatar I designed and illustrated for @theblindadventures

I am disabled and use much of the same accessibility technology as blind people, including, most prominently, text to speech. (Due to dyslexia.) I also use a service dog. (Due to seizures and extremely poor mental health.)

When Pete first started blogging I thought they were so cool and I was eager to support them however I could. I’m so excited to welcome another disabled blogger on to tumblr (and hopefully make another friend).

Thank you so much for giving me the chance to show off my art and replace your default avatar.

As I’ve come to see more of your blog and who you are I do think this avatar represents those things well.

Best,

Soul

Also, for those interested, I do this sort of work on commission. I have prices for traditional work here but am still working on pricing for digital works like the one seen here.

Please note that this image is the version with the transparency replaced with tumblr’s background color.

[Image description: a black Labrador guide dog with a white harness leading a person. The dog is shaded with a moderate amount of fur texture and detail. The person being guided is visible as only a hand gripping the harness and a set of legs. The dog looks at the viewer. The dog and figure are surrounded by a white circle. Outside of that circle reads “The Blind Adventures” in a hand writing font in an arch around the drawing. At the bottom, in a straight line, is a brail font reading the same.]
