Whiteout and Darkstalker from that one scene where Darkstalker comes home and she's screaming and overstimulated from Foeslayer and Arctics fight
I hope I didn't remember it wrong as its been a while since I've read it but Darkstalker came off as a super caring brother, I mean until another certain scene..
(Read more because I yap too much)
There was in fact a background, and the concept was really cute in my mind. But I just wasn't liking it, At some point I might redraw this and include that background. But No Idea if and when that might be.
GOAT month is nearly over, but there's still time to join sneepsnorp club for goat-themed papercrafts and stickers! :D the $10 tier gets three goat stickers plus the papercraft patterns, $5 tier gets papercrafts! :)
Iād love to see your take on Blue! I love how he looks and think your style would look great with him! I also just really wanna see you fully render a silkwing, so pretty
thanks so much Kai (o“v`o) I hope you enjoy this piece!
Here's my redesign! In my opinion, what Blue really needs is a better name- so I decided to stay as true to his original color scheme as I could. I added more greens to make him look more visibly related to Luna, as well as my own vibrant/bright tones for a little pop. Blue's wing shape and translucent appearance was inspired by the Melanus Blue and Godart's Morpho butterfly species, but the colors and patterns were mostly my own intuition (and attempt to create more harmony in my design.) When it comes to representing Blue's personality through appearance, I didn't want to illustrate the misconception that he is cowardly or weak - but rather a (mostly) calm, considerate dragon. I found that this was best conveyed through the use of curved lines and circle/wave patterns which I often associate with nature, meditation and the assurance Blue has in his identity/core values by the end of the arc. his posture and facial expression helped a lot too, mostly by creating a sense of confidence. There are a few other choices I made, but I'll leave them for you guys to interpret!
Returning readers are probably tired of hearing this, but thank you so much! I love seeing new requests in my askbox, as well as learning more about your favorite characters and why you love them so.
My current character waitlist looks like this: Sunny, Clearsight, Luna, freedom, Bigtail, Cricket, Clay, Blaze, Queen Thorn, Starflight, Darkstalker, Tsunami, Kinkajou, Lady Jewel, Queen Scarlet, Whiteout, Queen Pearl, The Librarian, Listener, and Winter.
Safe to say it might take a while to get around to them! I'm trying not to go through any particular order since sometimes certain characters just call - but if you don't see your favorite or have any other questions, come visit my askbox! I'm more than happy to share my brushes, process or any other resource I can provide to my fellow artists.
See you later |Ļd)ļ¾
There's this sort of anthropomorphizing that inherently happens in language that really gets me sometimes. I'm still not over the terminology of "gravity assist," the technique where we launch satellites into the orbit of other planets so that we can build momentum via the astounding and literally astronomical strength of their gravitational forces, to "slingshot" them into the direction we need with a speed that we could never, ever, ever create ourselves. I mean, some of these slingshots easily get probes hurtling through space at tens of thousands of miles per hour. Wikipedia has a handy diagram of the Voyager 1 satellite doing such a thing.
"Gravity assist." "Slingshot." Of course, on a very basic and objective level, yes, we are taking advantage of forces generated by outside objects to specifically help in our goals. We're getting help from objects in the same way a river can power a mill. And of course we call it a "slingshot," because the motion is very similar (mentally at least; I can't be sure about the exact physics).
Plus, especially compared to the other sciences, the terminology for astrophysics is like, really straightforward. "Black hole?" Damn yeah it sure is. "Big bang?" It sure was. "Galactic cluster?" Buddy you're never gonna guess what this is. I think it's an effect of the fact that language is generally developed for life on earth and all the strange variances that happen on its surface, that applying it to something as alien and vast as space, general terms tend to suffice very well in a lot more places than, like... idk, botany.
But, like. "Gravity assist." I still can't get the notion out of my head that such language implies us receiving active help from our celestial neighbors. They come to our aid. We are working together. We are assisted. Jupiter and the other planets saw our little messengers coming from its pale blue molecular cousin, and we set up the physics just right, so that they could help us send them out to far stranger places than this, to tell us all about what they find out there.
We are assisted.
And there is no better way to illustrate my feelings on the matter than to just show you guys one of my favorite paintings, this 1973 NASA art by Rick Guidice to show the Pioneer probe doing this exact thing:
"... You, sent out beyond your recall, go to the limits of your longing. Embody me. ..."
Gravity assist.

Wof ocs: land-dwelling seawing and grounded skywing (aka Kelp and Osprey). Itās not like they Canāt swim or fly, but itās a lot harder for them than the average joe.
I donāt have a whole lot of plot for them; they mostly just travel together avoiding the active battlegrounds and maybe help escort an ailing Mudwing kid to her family at some point. Par for the course with my ocs, theyāre both losers. They initially only really hang out together for the mutual benefits: Osprey is intimidating enough to ward off most bandits by looks alone and has a more realistic approach to setting goals and general direction (filling in a leadership role and balancing out Kelpās lack of a backbone or stranger danger sense and curbing her absurd fantasies ) while Kelp knows a little more about *how* to actually get things done and has a better approximation of people skills (filling in Ospreyās considerable gaps in knowledge about anything thatās not farm animals or military tactics and balancing out his aggressively distrustful demeanor that prevents him from asking for help. Sheās also the one who can talk their way into and out of situations) they eventually figure out theyāre a good team and more or less hang around each other
Right now I think the two are somewhere on the coast near the Diamond spray delta????(google map of Pyrrhia idk)
Some general info related to whatās on the page:
Every tribe has a lot of regional variety in terms of physical appearance. For skywings, the northern ones are the most populous and have united the other major aeries under the goal of pushing for imperial expansion on the side of burn. Northern skywings have the most dimorphism between males and females as well as the brightest colors out of the skywing region types (females have a very distinct reddish orange coloring while males have duller browns and yellows, as opposed to ospreys group where itās switched to darker brown f vs lighter brown m) This is because they have the most unbalanced parental care system, where the male raises the chicks alone while the female leaves. No matter the type of physical difference, the social separation is ever present and more or less as extreme (completely matriarchal). An aerie is a nesting area for a group of related individuals, where there is one dominant female, a pool of married-in males (one is chosen every season to be the matriarchs pair), some other female subordinates, and the matriarchs kids (including some adult males). Females are leaders, hunters, and providers while the males do menial labor or domestic, and craft tasks. Among all skywing ethnicities, there are cases of males being born with female coloring or vice versa. Males with female coloring do not have a place in society according to their rules, since they look like a female but canāt lay eggs (meaning they are ābrokenā in the eyes of their peers. They canāt even participate in making eggs because that would look gay and Iām deciding that theyre homophobic for fun/because of the sanctity they put on the hetero-ness of their everything). Theyād normally just be driven out in bigger northern aeries, but Osprey is an exception because of his slightly different culture and because his group needed every worker they could get to survive on their land (he was kinda just treated like a defective female that has to work with the males. Not fun). A female with male coloring is more tolerated ONLY if they stay celibate and out of the way of the ārealā females (often, they are just put in all-female homes as an attendant). Ospreys aerie was a small and rural one that practiced subsistence herding/hunting, so it wasnāt hard for a northern recruiter to strong-arm them with a little military coercion and cash into giving up their eligible youths for the draft. He didnāt really feel a particularly strong bond with any of his family group due to their previously described sentiments towards his condition, but itās still a blow to the ego to know that they sold him off to die for not even one iron ingot. He got lucky with the force he was taken into (they got bronze swords and leather armor, which is more than some other skywing soldiers) but not so lucky with the area he was sent to (Sandwing ambush). After being badly wounded and finding out he was the only survivor, he fled rather than going back to a northern base and has been evading capture (and execution) since. The lack of depth perception/decreased vision in general means he can seriously mess up landing and taking off in crowded areas like a forest, and canāt do a lot of complicated maneuvers anymore. Despite already being jaded and cynical at his big teen age, heās not really equipped to be on his own at all and has been thrown off the deep end in terms of experiencing the world for the first time.
Seawings live in pods of family members and some outsiders. Unlike other dragons, they are actually led by a pair-bonded male and female rather than it being a female-led harem type thing. This pair are the bulls, and theyāre bigger than everyone else because of hormones (theyāre the only reproductive members. This is enforced to varying degrees between pods, some larger more organized ones even have legislation about it. Homosexual activity is encouraged to prevent threats to the bulls (aka new kids or a new mating pair). Through interacting with other tribes, some of the more powerful āsuperpodsā made up of multiple family lines have adopted a more female-dominant system where there are still physically distinct bulls but only the female does any governing. For trade and other stuff, too, pods will normally only send their female members since no one else would respect a male. Kelps pod was a mid-sized one that was technically a part of another super podās domain, but they only really interacted through some resource taxes and occasional new laws being delivered. Kelp was on the bottom rung of the social ladder and chafed a lot with her pod because of her general weirdness and lack of strong allegiance to her bull (her mother). She still feels sentiment towards them because they raised her, but was never able to fit in. The superpod they were under was allied with blister, making their territory a target for mudwings and skywings. Eventually, Kelpās pod was affected by this when an ongoing battle between the superpodās troops and some mudwings spilled into their land. The superpod forces lost and Kelps home was looted, in the process she was burned and separated from the others. For about a week she hung around tending to her own wounds to see if her pod would regroup somewhere, but eventually left to find a real doctor (trying not to think about the implications of them not coming back) itās been about a month since then, and she has somehow been stumbling by using her craft skills. Shes been robbed several times and has only gotten away with her life thanks to the good ol tail slap+ massive seal teeth jaw strength combo (other than that all her health problems are 100x worse because sheās on land most of the time to avoid Mudwing-patrolled rivers and the hostility of other pods.) Sheās never been outside her pods range before and the world is not so great, but she has a positive outlook (some might even say a foolishly optimistic one).
This time a real animation meme for you, my wof fans. Bon appƩtit!
[Start ID: A Stylized digital drawing of the character Darkstalker from Wings of Fire trapped under a mountain. The piece is in a lineless style with very saturated colors. Darkstalker is curled up in a cavern inside the mountain, confined by the blue rocky walls around him. His figure is a dark silhouette with some bright colors popping out like his white mane with cyan and magenta streaks, icey blue diamond stars along his back and tail, and cyan talons. His eyes are open wide, with pink and blue sclera, a white iris, and black hourglass shaped pupils. His wings and tail wrap around him in his confined pose. in the center his talons are flexed out as a bracelet with 3 gemstones on his wrist shatters with radiant magenta light beaming outward. The mountain he is trapped under is a bright blue, with two jagged peaks reaching into the sky. Directly above the peaks is a blue comet flying through the sky amongst 3 full moon. Th rest of the night sky is dark with some speckled stars and a magenta and blue gradient at the horizon. End ID.]
A year later, I wanted to make a follow up piece to this Darkstalker drawing!
DOGE just froze funding to vital Federal and Indigenous conservation programs devoted to supporting the very delicate and tenuous existence of the black-footed ferret.
I fell in love with these animals as a kid traveling to our National Parks. Their rarity and ferocity made me sharply aware, even as a child, of just how much of a responsibility we have toward our environment. I can't bear the thought of them being a fucking casualty of Trump and Musk.
Look at them! They do war dances.
Hi! Iām a big fan of your art and work over all
Iāve been wondering, since Iāve seen you give your thoughts on some other dragons, what are your thoughts on Clay?
Clay. Iāve talked about him for a bit in a previous post somewhere. He is the first protagonist in the entire series and thus serves as our introduction into this world. While he enters the story with his own emotional baggage, he pretty much resolves all of that within the first book and mellows out from then on, fading into the background as a quiet support character.
Because of that it is maybe easy to dismiss Clay as that big guy who talks about food a lot and doesnāt do much else. But I do think heās a bit more complex than that and is a well-rounded character with things going on in his own right.
CW: Discussion of physical abuse.
Clays early years were molded heavily by his belief that he almost killed Tsunami while she was hatching. He believed this because his guardians, mostly Kestrel, insisted this is what happened. Of course at the end of the first book we learn that this wasnāt the case and that they were just misinformed about how Mudwings work.
To us, this may all seem absolutely ridiculous. We look at Clay and see this obvious gentle giant without a malicious bone in his body angsting about being a blood-crazed monster. But for Clay himself, this was a very real, very horrifying situation. Suspend your disbelief for a moment. His entire childhood was marred by the crushing guilt of almost having murdered his surrogate sister at birth, and he couldnāt remember why he did it. He understood nothing about this situation, and didnāt know if this secret violent side could even resurface one day. Basic things like going to sleep would become terrifying; he may have laid awake, wondering whether his body might act on its own as soon as he fell unconscious. Just like back then, when it acted before he could even form coherent thoughts. The fear of losing control to the monster and waking up on top of a loved oneās mangled body was always there.
This perception of himself as a violent killer was at odds with his social nature as a Mudwing. He loved his surrogate siblings with the same intensity that any Mudwing would love their own, and thus he hated the part of himself that threatened them. As a direct response to this dissonant view, Clay developed a desire to protect them. If he willed himself to shield them from getting hurt with all of his strength, he would never be able to harm them again. This was his way of coping with the fear.
It is pretty apparent from the text that at least Kestrel was physically abusive towards them. Dune was possibly too, Webs I donāt think so, but he also didnāt do anything to stop it. As Clay grew older I think he began to recognize the patterns. He would start deliberately acting in ways so that most of Kestrelās ire would be redirected towards himself instead of the others. This is why all the Dragonets of Destiny have such deep respect for Clay; they remember him always standing between them and Kestrel, even as he ended up with more and more scars for it.
Luckily, he is able to reconnect with his Mudwing heritage at the end of book 1 and learns that he never was that blood-crazed murderer the guardians insisted he was. But even so, the scars and memories would never fully fade, and heād never lose sight of the need to protect his loved ones.
Clayās love of food and eating is well-established, to the point where it sometimes seems like it is his only character trait from book 2 onwards. This is normal; heās got a big body and I assume the self-regenerative properties inherent to Mudwings burn a lot of calories, so he needs to eat a lot to refuel them. I think thereās a bit more to him still though.
Clay is at his happiest when he can either prevent someone elseās pain, or take it away. Conversely he becomes distressed when he sees someone suffering. I believe he is incredibly earnest and built close to water. He cries easily, though never in response to his own pain or suffering. He feels positive emotions very strongly and can get overwhelmed that way, especially when he sees his loved ones happy. When he cries, he does so openly and without shame. It is very unsatisfying to tease him because he will usually just take what people say to him at face value and thus make them feel bad.
Heās also very physically affectionate and huggy.
People who meet Clay often get the impression that he is book dumb, or just stupid in general. This is not the case, as Clay does have a capacity for learning even complex subject matter. I just think he struggles with subjects he canāt see a practical application for, or arenāt relevant to things he wants to do. He has little interest in memorizing ancient figures or learning how to measure the sides of a triangle
When Glory fights Deathbringer in book 3, she makes mention of a ādragon anatomy classā which I assume was taught by Webs. Clay, as much as he struggled with history and numbers, excelled at this particular class because its insight could be used to keep people safe. As such, whenever the need for it arises, Clay is usually quick to act as the groupās primary healer/medical advisor.
(Excerpts from WoF graphic novels 2 and 3, censored for blood.)
This notion is further supported by the fact that, once they all become teachers at the Jade Mountain Academy, Clay is the one to lead an anatomy class, just like the one he attended before.
Clay is pretty much everyoneās big brother. While he isnāt as eccentric and colorful as the people he is surrounded by, his earnestness and general benevolence make him the backbone of the Dragonets of Destiny. Whenever anyone has a deeply-rooted, serious problem they are hesitant to bring up with others, Clay will usually be the first person considered as a confidant. Tsunami and Starflight know he would never judge or shame them no matter how ridiculous the thing they approach him with. Glory trusts him with her emotions whenever her stoic facade cracks. And Sunny has an incredibly strong bond with him.
I think that makes him pretty cool, even if he doesnāt really have much to do anymore once he overcomes his personal demons. Iām happy that he gets to be happy in the end.
want to be clear that if i ever talk about a headcanon and then later discuss a headcanon that is directly contradictory to the first one, thatās because headcanons exist in a quantum state where they are all simultaneously true and not true up until the point where i discuss it in detail, in which case that is the one that is true in that instance. schroedingerās headcanons
