Give yourself a magical perk-up and shine with the energy of fire. Materials:
Red candle
Glass of red wine
Cinnamon (powdered)
You can use non-alcoholic wine or even juice, if you prefer. Pour the wine into a nice glass and add a small sprinkle of cinnamon to it. Dip your finger into the wine and give it a little stir.
Run your wet fingertip around the rim of the glass until you hear a ringing tone. Watch the candle flame and visualize it shining out from within yourself.
Drink the glass of wine and feel its warmth flow through you. Place the empty glass next to the candle and allow the candle to burn itself out.

* From my [anxiety and stress spell page]. * * [List of Spells page]. Heavily under construction!
So. You need a little boost of courage, a little something to make you feel as if you could conquer the open skies. I have just the thing for you.
(WARNING: This spell is NOT vegan or vegetarian friendly as it contains bones and eggshells. However, these components may be substituted with other things according to personal association.)
YOU WILL NEED: - dried basil (courage) - salt (protection) - eggshells (growth, protection) - bird’s bone (flight, courage) [This can be substituted of course if you are against using animal components in spells or are uncomfortable using bones] I used chicken bones, I did not harm an innocent bird!
Grind everything up and mix them together well. MAKE SURE you seal the bottle with wax.
(Let me know if you did this, and how it turned out!)
As summer ebbs away, and fall flows towards us, we release the things we were holding onto, and make room for new opportunities. October is a special month. The Equinox marks the beginning of the rest of the year: three months to hunker down, focus on what you want to create, make and do, and start to see the results.
I like to do a so-called spring cleaning at the start of every season. Your home, after all, is the place where you spend the majority of your time: it’s where you create and dream. It makes sense to spend a day getting your home ready for the next few months.
Start by cleaning your home in the conventional sense: vacuum, dust, clean your mirrors, and do a couple of loads of laundry. Once you’ve cleared all the muck, emptied your garbage bins, and cleaned out your fridge, it’s time to move onto cleaning in a more metaphysical way. Here are some of my favourite ways to do just that!
Decorate Your Altar - This is the perfect time to give your altar a super-clean, as well as a bit of a makeover. When you do this, it allows you to refocus on your dreams. Take everything off your altar, clean it up, and then be selective about what you put back. Choose candles which reflect your hopes and desires, burn some fresh incense, and place your favourite crystals just so.
Open The Windows - It may be getting colder, but keeping the windows open – as well as turning on a fan or two – is a great way to keep the energy in your house nice and buoyant. Fresh air is refreshing and cleansing, and it gets the energy moving. If the air in your home is stagnant, that will affect how you feel.
Get a Salt Lamp - You can buy salt lamps on Amazon for under $20, and they’re wonderful. They purify the air, emit negative ions, and naturally clear the air of allergens, so they’re great for people with asthma or allergies. I’m obsessed with mine, plus, the glow is so soft and relaxing!
Bring Nature Indoors - Few things will make you feel as good as walking into a house full of fresh flowers! They really brighten up a space, and if your budget can swing it, a fresh bunch of blooms every week is a fantastic gift to yourself. If arranging flowers isn’t your strongest area, Real Simple has got your back. Alternatively, you could buy some plants and station them all around your home. They increase the vibration of a space, and look beautiful, too.
Use a Space Cleansing Spray - You can easily make your own (all you need is a selection of essential oils and a bottle of vodka!), or if you’d prefer, you can buy one. The Australian Bush Flower Essences Space Clearing Mist is super-potent, and it contains angelsword, boab, fringed violet, lichen, red lily, calendula, echinacea, chamomile, aloe, arnica, sandalwood, cedar wood, eucalyptus, and lavender. Bad vibes begone!
Light Candles - As soon as I wake up in the morning, I light the candles on my altar, meditate, and then start working. The simple act of lighting a match and sparking a candle reminds me of my intentions for the day, and sets an atmosphere of happiness and calm. You can use any kind of candle you like, but I recommend choosing a candle in a colour (or scent) that reminds you of your intentions.
Put Down The Seat! In Feng Shui it’s believed that if you don’t close the toilet lid, you’re flushing away all the good energy. The same concept applies to dripping or leaky taps: always make sure they’re fixed or turned off, because a dripping faucet signifies financial drain, or that your money is literally running out!
Visualize Your Home Filled With Light - While you may not have sunshine streaming into your home, you can easily fill your home with divine white light by simply visualising it. It’s easy: see your home filling up with a bright white light, expanding and filling every corner, every dark space. When your home is saturated with this divine light, it will provide energetic healing for everything and everyone who enter. Another beautiful option is to literally bring more light into your home by hanging rainbow makers or prisms in your windows. They cast beautiful rainbows on the wall, floor, and ceiling. Such a treat!
Change Up Your Art - When you look at the photos, paintings, and objects hung on your wall, ask yourself: does this make me feel good or bad? Is it enhancing my energy or draining it? Surround yourself with positive artwork, and be ruthless!
Clean Your Front Door - If your front door is looking grubby or missing its number, do something about it! For easy house-witchery, make sure your entrance-way is clean and clear. Wipe down your door, including the number, the bell, and the door handle. This isn’t just about being hygienic (although, of course, it’s a nice bonus!): when your door is clean and clear, love, money, and other good things will be able to find their way to you.
Make Some Noise! In ritual, sound – whether it be chanting, the ringing of bells, or the beating of drums – is used to clear and change the energy of a space. You can do this in your home, too, by clapping your hands. All you need to do is walk around the house, clap, and listen to how it sounds. If a clap sounds heavy or flat, the energy in that area is stagnant and stuck, but if it sounds crisp and clear, this indicates that the energy is flowing well. In the area where a clap sounds heavy, stay in that spot a little longer, and keep clapping until the sound becomes clear. You can do the same thing with bells, singing bowls, drums, or even a tambourine.
Sage - Burning sage in your home is a fantastic way to clear out stale energy. You can buy sage sticks all over the place, but I recommend using Etsy and supporting an independent business owner! Another great option is to burn Palo Santo, which smells amazing!
Take A Salt Bath - Your house might be clean, but that doesn’t mean much if you’re frazzled on the inside! One of my favourite ways to relax and change my energy is to have an Epsom salt bath. You absorb the salt through your skin, increasing your levels of magnesium (which calms you down, increases your energy, reduces irritability, and even aids concentration and sleep). It’s marvellous stuff. I buy huge bags of lavender Epsom salts and pour ample amounts into the tub every week, and it really helps make me feel happy again. P.S. If you don’t have a tub, I love these tips for turning your shower into a sanctuary.
I hope these tips help you to transform your home into an enchanting and wonderful place this season!

Inspired by “Practical Magic” (1998), this is a love spell that I wrote partly for myself, but also for a friend of mine.
You will need:
Large bowl
Consecrated water
Rose oil (or Rosewater)
Garden with many flowers in bloom, or lots of leaves
River or stream with a good current, or a windy night
Timing: Full Moon
[Note: It is not a good idea to perform this spell with a specific person in mind, as those sort of spells easily backfire, or become disappointing if your crush turns out to be attached or not everything you hoped for. Instead, picture someone who you have not yet met who fulfills your heart’s desire.]
Ritual:
Record a list of desirable traits in your BoS or journal. Describe your ideal mate’s physical appearance, and mental, emotional, and spiritual habits. Be as thorough as you like. The more specific you are, the more likely it is that you won’t get pixed by a loophole. Try to present things in a positive fashion, i.e. “He/She will be kind,” but don’t be afraid to mark down traits that you definitely DON’T want, i.e. “He/She will not smoke.”
Cleanse yourself with a ritual bath and dress in something that makes you feel desirable and lovely. If possible, go barefoot. Taking the bowl in hand, walk into the garden and thank the earth and the plants for their gifts before you begin.
Walk through the garden. Pluck a blossom, petal, or leaf for every trait you desire in a lover or a mate, reciting each out loud as you do. (Be careful not to take too much from any one plant.) Place them into the bowl. Continue until you have gone through the entire list.
Rub the rim of the bowl with consecrated water and rose oil, clockwise, three times, while visualizing your energy pouring into the bowl to join the blossoms and petals, as an attractant to your prospective lover. Chant as you do:
Lover fair and Lover fine Come and join your heart with mine I pray you, love the whole of me And ever true and faithful be I offer up my love, my all And pray you heed my earnest call
Take up the bowl of blossoms and cast them either into a strong-flowing body of water or into a strong wind, saying:
Water/Wind, flow through hill and tree And bring a lover back to me
Go home and light a red candle. Sit for a while and muse on the idea of meeting the person your spell might bring into your life as the candle burns down.
Thereafter, keep your eyes…and your heart…open!
As a way to maintain the landlord rules going on when I’m away traveling or at my girlfriend’s house, I made this amulet that is hanging on my front door.
I was called to do this during the banishing ritual I posted here, and so I used what I had in hand: some twigs and black ribbon. It could have been a poppet of me or an item that’s close to me and will not leave my place.
They key of it is my blood, connecting the item to me. So, when I’m out, this represents me and my power over my land–it’s basically a warning for intruders that I’m there even when I’m not, I will notice them and will be pissed when I’m back.
There are countless types of divination, so this list is by no means comprehensive, (actually it’s quite short) but it should help with the main methods! :D
A form of divination in which you enter a trance-like state, gaze into a medium, and look for signs or symbols. Common mediums include black mirrors, fire, water, smoke, and tiles.
Divination done using cards of sorts. The images/words/etc. hold meanings that you can interpret. Methods of cartomancy are: Tarot reading, oracle card reading, regular playing card reading, and even the reading of Pokemon cards. Symbolism/interpretation is the main importance with cartomancy.
A form of divination in which you use a pendant-like tool called a pendulum. It has a weighted end, and a place to hold it near the top. The answer to your question is determined by the way it swings. The answers vary from the traditional yes/no/maybe/DWA, to words/letters/numbers, all depending on the board/chart you might use.
Lithomancy is a method of divination in which crystals are cast out on a circular board. Their arrangements are interpreted, and the light reflecting off of them is also taken into account. These are best to buy in sets/kits, since it can be a bit difficult to create one for yourself.
This form of divination involves a few different methods. Some diviners cast the runes, others pull them from a bag, and even still there are those who lay them all out and choose one that feels the best for the current situation (without looking). It is a Norse system and involves special symbols with meanings you can use to interpret the reading.
A similar type of divination to scrying, nephelomancy involves cloud gazing to interpret signs, symbols, and omens. It’s something that can be done at pretty much any time, as long as the sky is visible. I wrote a detailed post on it, linked on my masterpost, which is at the end of this list.
You’ve probably heard of reading tea leaves. Tasseography is the fancy word for that. You go through a process of drinking the tea, turning your cup, and placing it on a plate before reading it in specific directions/paths. There are many ways to do this, but most include using the symbols as omens.
Oneiromancy is good old fashion dream interpretation. If you had a dream that you know means something, take a look into Oneiromancy. Symbolism is important, and so are your personal associations and experiences.
This is a very old method if divination, through which you use a book to answer a question you have. You can use any book you own and at any time. You ask your question, open the book to a random page, and read what you see. Sometimes the response is straightforward, while other times very vague and confusing.
Graphology is the study and interpretation of handwriting or scribbles. Automatic writing falls under this category, which is when you allow a spirit/etc. to use you as a tool of communication. Sometimes words/shapes come out as answers.
Although candles are a relatively modern part of magic, they are now a significant one. In candle magic, the candle is often dressed before it is burned.
Dressing can include some or all of these steps:
Cleaning the candle of unwanted energies
Filling the candle with the intent of the spell
Carving information on the candle, especially identifying information if the candle represents another person
Rubbing special oil on to the candle
Adding powdered herbs on top of the oil (big chunks will burn!)
Adding additional decorations
In ceremonial magic such as Wicca, dressing a candle may be very ritualistic and have specific rules. Refer to your tradition to figure out the correct steps. In folk magics or intuitive paths, think about your goals for the spell, what the candle represents, and what feels right to you.
Should all candles be dressed? No, I don’t think so. Sometimes a candle is a small sacrifice (of goods and effort) and simply burning it is the right thing to do. If you want to light a candle to honor an ancestor or spirit, I don’t think it needs to be dressed.
Is this list comprehensive? I doubt it. These are just the common ones I know about.
Fire hazard? Magic is a part of nature, it does not defy nature. Magical candles are not less likely to set things on fire. If you’ve never dressed a candle with oil or herbs, do a test run first to see if it will ignite. No candles should be allowed to burn without supervision, so if the spell calls for the entire candle to burn down, consider choosing a small one for the spell. That being said, if you are going to leave a candle by itself anyway, keep it in a big dish filled with sand or water (that is sure to catch the candle if it falls over), at least 2 feet away from all fabrics and walls.
Candlesticks and carvers. The candlesticks or holders that you use will be soaked in the energy of the spells you cast. Give them a good washing to get the wax off and a nice spiritual cleansing to get rid of the ‘leftovers’. Likewise, whatever you use to carve in the candle is a miniature wand that will be imprinted with whatever you send through it. Consider using a disposable tool like a toothpick and throw it away outside.
