How does one find a QPP? Asking for a sad aroace friend who just wants someone to go on adventures with, and talk to after a long day of work, and cuddle on the couch with, and tell stories to, and infodump with, but who very much does not want a romantic or sexual relationship. (The friend is me).

I've always had a high level of respect for smut writers, because I, a crack and fluff writer, cannot write a kiss scene without wanting to jump off a bridge and/or put my head through the desk due to the sheer level of secondhand embarrassment I get. YALL ARE SO COOL FOR THAT, SERIOUSLY. Way stronger than me too. I'm looking over my shoulder like "holyshitholyshitholyshit" and the thing I wrote was "A looked fondly at B, gently grabbing their hand and drawing them closer"

I just started watching Overlord (on episode 5) and honestly? I'm committed to whatever past relationship Albeto and Shalltear had, and whether or not they're getting back together. They act like divorced wives who want everyone to know exactly why they aren't married anymore. They also definitely don't spend more time together than necessary. And they reallllly aren't kissing off screen, promise.

If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...

Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?

Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?

Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?

Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?

Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?

Receiving comments means so much to fic authors so we’d love to encourage people to leave more. But we appreciate that leaving comments can be a bit daunting or draining, especially on days when we are tired or already stressed. So here are a few resources to hopefully encourage us all to leave more and to make doing so easier.

Archive of Our Own floating comment boxes

There are a couple of versions of these out there and they can be helpful. They are browser extensions that allow you to keep the comment box on the screen whenever you like so that you can easily comment as you read, rather than getting to the end and panicking about what to say.

Speculate on what could happen after the end of the fic
