Mushroom fact of the week!

Termitomyces fungus forms symbiotic relationships with termites. The termites bring the fungi plant material to decompose and build it "fungal combs" to grow in. In exchange the fungi provides nutrient rich spherules for the termites to eat.

Funguary Day 27: Scarlet Cup

Most species that would come to mind when you think of fungi are basidiomycetes, fungi that produce their spores in cells called basidia. This phylum of fungi contains most of the “fleshy” fungi, including all fungi with gills or pores. Some “fleshy” fungi however, like the Scarlet Cup, are Ascomycetes. Mushrooms like morels and saddle fungi are also a part of this phylum. Ascomycetes produce their spores in sac-like structures called asci, unlike the basidia of the basidiomycetes. See the diagram below for more clarification on the difference between asci and basidia!

Funguary Day 14: Crepidotus

The term Crepidotus refers to a whole genus of fungi characterized by their small convex or fan shaped caps and their growth of decaying wood or plant debris. The most visually notable member of this genus I could find was the cinnabar oysterling, a mushroom with a bright red to orange cap and flame-like fibers at the edge of the cap and margins of the gills.

Funguary Day 14: Crepidotus

Crepidotus cinnabarinus shows up in late summer and early fall, and its bright colors make it stand out against fallen branches and rotting trees.

Mushroom fact of the Week!

Lichens are extremely durable. In 2005 NASA sent lichen to space to test how it stood up in the freezing cold vacuum. It was left outside in space for a period of time, and within 24 hours of rehydration had resumed all normal photosynthetic activity

Mushroom Fact Of The Week!

Funguary Day 1: Veiled Lady

This mushroom has an intense stink that attracts insects and gives the mushroom its several other names, including “basket stinkhorn”, “longnet stinkhorn”, and “crinoline stinkhorn”. The insects attracted to the smell help spread the spores of the mushroom after coming into contact with it.

I've also made an art piece for this day you can see here!

Funguary Day 2: Chicken of the Woods

The chicken of the woods is most commonly known for being highly sought after for its edibility, but it is also a tree killer.

Funguary Day 2: Chicken Of The Woods

This mushroom infects trees causing a brown rot within the heartwood. The rot is primarily in the main trunk, but can extend into branches as well. It infects both living and nonliving trees, usually making its way into living trees through injuries in the bark or roots. Once mushrooms show up, there's nothing you can do to rid the tree of the fungi.

It also tastes like chicken

But no need to worry, we all exist. We must remember the value of time, but we must not get stuck in the paradox of existentialism

-Timekeeper anon

After a long period of contemplation I have concluded this anons perspective on time itself gives to them being Armillaria ostoyae, as it is known to have live for thousands of years, giving it ample opportunity to observe the paradox of time
