After being condemned by the Jews, Jesus was sent to the Roman governor, Pilate. (Under Roman law, the Jews couldn’t kill anyone.)

Pilate saw Jesus’s innocence, so tried to release him. The Jewish crowd, the people who had welcomed Jesus only 5 days prior, was determined that he be crucified. They said if Pilate freed Jesus he was against Caesar, since Jesus claimed to be the King of the Jews. According to custom, Pilate gave the people a choice: Free Jesus Or free Barabbas, a murderer, and a freedom fighter against Rome, the very thing they accused Jesus of. They chose Barabbas.

Though he still believed in Jesus’s innocence, Pilate washed his hands of Jesus’s death and handed him over to be crucified.
