I wish to be with the trees.
Roaming the forest for so long that I eventually start to become it.
I will grow antlers and claws.
Mushrooms with sprout from my skin, ivy will wrap itself around my limbs.
My eyes will glow in the dark, I will be able to speak to the animals and plants.
I will live in a cave, and host picnics for all of the citters.
I will thank the trees for letting me be with them.
I do not deserve them.

After a rough couple months of mental health, all my wards and shields kinda… fell by the wayside. Since I’ve been putting them back up, I thought I’d offer a general explanation of how I do it.
Basically, I use a form of sympathetic magic to reduce the toll my wards take on me. Otherwise it has to be an obnoxiously complex multi day process. Since this works just as well, I don’t see the point in putting myself through that.
So clearly it comes in handy if you have limited energy reserves, but it’s also useful if you have issues visualizing. I’ve included another method to make this work specifically for folks with visualization issues.
Supplies
All you need is a few writing utensils in assorted colors and some paper, or an image editing program. It doesn’t need to be a fancy one, you can literally do this in Paint if that’s what you’ve got.
The Prep Work
For the sake of convenience (and also not publicly posting my actual house on the internet like a dingus) I’m gonna be using a random Sims 3 lot for this post. Say hi to our demo house:
We’ve got the house, so now we’re gonna map the place!
If your place is on its own lot, include the whole lot. I like to do this from a top down view so if I’m struggling I can go to Google Earth and get a reference.
But since I’m using the Sims for this demonstration I’m gonna just… shift the camera angle.
So, from here you’re going to mark off the property line, walls of the house, trees, gardens, paths, frences, decks, etc. Whatever you think is relevant.
It doesn’t have to be perfect or 100 percent straight, just enough you can tell what’s going on.
This is what I ended up with for the demo house:
So yeah, clearly it doesn’t have to be perfect, just close enough you have everything of importance covered.
This is a lot sloppier than I’d normally do it since it was like 5 AM and I wanted my bed, but it would still work because I don’t really do a ton with plants so the missing tree and chunk of garden aren’t a big deal to me.
(That said, be smarter than me when you’re doing this for realsies. Don’t do it for real when you’re about to drop from exhaustion.)
So, now you set up your external protections.
For this exercise I picked a fire based ward for the property line to incinerate malicious magic and deter anybody nasty, a ward filler that was inspired by Apollo and made up of golden arrows that will sap the strength of malicious magic and cause extreme discomfort to people with less than honorable intentions who got through the first ward, a fog based ward to slow/delay any intruders and to hold any magic that gets through the rest of it till it dissipates, and a sanitization ward at the front porch and the back deck because I’m an empath and don’t like taking residual crud from outside into my house.
You can set these up in a few ways, but I’ll be including one with visualization and one without so this doesn’t get any longer than it already is.
The Procedure: Visualization Edition
Drag your finger along the lines of the diagram and visualize the ward going up on that part of your property. While you do, focus on what you want your ward to look like, how it feels, what you want it to do, how strong you want it to be, where you want it how you want it to react to an attempted breach, etc. That’s it!
It’s still going to take energy, but the drain on your resources should be a lot smaller.
The Procedure: Not Visualizing Edition
So, this is a little more complicated but not too much so. You might want to make a few copies of your diagram (or take a couple pictures on your phone. Just in general replicate it a couple of times.) just in case, because you’re gonna draw your wards.
Grab some pens/pencils/markers in colors that correspond to your wards (or pick colors in your graphics program if you’re going the tech magic route)- elemental affinity, purpose, both, up to you.
Using my example wards, I ended up with this:
Since you’re not visualizing, focus on the intent as effectively as you can while you’re drawing, because you’re gonna speak (or think!) those suckers into existence.
Describe what you want it to look like, what you’d want it to do, how strong you want it to be, where you want it how you want it to react to an attempted breach, etc. All the same things you’d be visualizing if you were going that route.
If you’re confident in your art skills, you can save a bit of energy by not focusing as much on what you want it to look like and drawing a direct representation of your ward instead. (I’m not fantastic, so I’m sitting there adding stuff like “this red line is a wall of fire taller than the house” into my description. Still works!)
This is a little less energy efficient than the visualization method in my experience but it’s still heaps better than doing it all on a large scale.
So that’s the process! It’s the same deal inside your place, except instead of rocks, trees, and decks you’ll be marking windows, doors, and furniture.
Feel free to modify the method here however you see fit, and if you do I’d love to hear about it!
💧white salt (sea salt) + purification, dispels negative energy
💧black salt (hawaiian lava salt) + warding areas from trouble and unwanted contact + absorbs negative energies, useful in purification baths + charged negative salts make for potent curses
💧pink salt (himalayan crystal salt) + promotes self-love and personal empowerment + heals emotional wounds, dissolves self-doubt and confusion + useful for wish magic, romance, and compassion
💧red salt (hawaiian alaea salt) + love, attraction, romance, passion for life + amplifies magical intent when burned with herbs + enhances energy, enthusiasm, and assertiveness
💧epsom salt (epsomite) + used in ritual baths for purification and physical healing
Unless you are new, you have probably endured many witches and practitioners emphasize the importance of mastering protection. It is a lot like carrying a self-defense tool, you are preventing something from happening before it happens to you in your most vulnerable state.
DISCLAIMER: This is based mostly on my personal experiences and own research as a practicing witch. Everyone has their own methods, you do not need to agree with me.
If you would like to support my endeavors, check out my profile! I had to retype this 3 times because I didn't save and would appreciate support
Spiritual protection takes several forms. It can be a crystal in your pocket, a jar, a sigil, a sign from a tarot card, a talisman, a ward, a bind, etc.
First and foremost, we must discuss different categories of protection.
Not giving room for the energy to enter to begin with. Some of us know the shock of interacting with a negative energy all too well, and in my experience, any negative energy makes it stronger. This makes an influx of positive energy so much more important and valuable
I see us and spaces all as having a limited capacity for energy, just like we have a limited capacity for anything. If there is too much positive energy, there will be no room for the negative energy to enter, let alone negative energy for them to fuel themselves.
Getting rid of the bad/boring/used energy that no longer serves us is purification. Some of us will practice purification by smoke cleansing, which is my personal favorite. Others will use baths, or protective oils to purify their energy. Energy that has stuck around too long feels like monotony to me, and when I feel monotony, I always cleanse.
There are a couple of different ways you are able to defensively protect yourself from negative energy. Warding is my preferred method, so we will discuss that first.
A ward can be a metaphorical wall, or an energy sponge, regardless of how you use it, it keeps everything you don't want out. Wards have to be scripted or programmed beforehand, in my experience. The more detail/work you put into them, the stronger they get. You can make them like Jell-O, or like concrete. They can allow any energy, no energy, or only certain energies to enter. The bounds to wards are endless, the only downside is trying to figure out when to charge them. (I recommend using the sun or moon to charge them, using yourself later on, charging them once a week). A more in depth post on wards is coming later.
Setting boundaries is another way to defend yourself, they allow us control in our relationships and interactions. They are exactly the type of boundaries you are thinking of, physical and mental (or psychic) boundaries. Developing strong boundaries is crucial to most relationships, not allowing toxicity to interfere with the beautiful relationship you have. Physical boundaries may be a salt line or circle, while mental may be shielding or cleansing.
I don't recommend beginners to start by working with offensive protection, unless absolutely necessary. I do not use offensive protection unless I genuinely feel that I am in harm's way.
This is a type of protection that will hunt the perpetrator down, regardless of whether or not it is a known energy or being. Sometimes simply casting chaos into the world is enough for the energy to leave you alone for a while, but other times, it is to keep the energy at bay. Hexes are considered offensive protection by some (me included).
This is simply reflecting the energy sent onto you back onto the source, the most simple "no you don't" in witch history. Most commonly, deflection is done through Return To Sender workings, and when the energy or being is returned it is stuck to them.
Some witches can sense when negative energy is on their way to them, others find out through readings. Mirror Boxes are great for deflecting, along with sigils or witch balls.
Calling upon protective deities, guardians, familiars, etc. to protect a person or space can be done through regular offerings to them. The offerings signify you still need their assistance, but this can very from being to being. All different beings can be pinned against each other in the name of protection, just ensure that they are stronger than whatever energy is trying to harm you. Many will set up altars or spirit houses as a way to visualize the agreement to work with the beings, making it special to the energy.

In regard to the relationship..
1. What I want out of this relationship
2. Expectations that aren’t being met
3. Underlying fears
4. Where you don’t see eye to eye
5. What’s not being confronted
6. What you need to let go of
7. What your heart says
8. Part of me that needs time to heal
This post will specifically discuss warding and protections, not cleansing, banishing, or grounding, though those are related and important
Sense memory- if you have a strong ability to imagine sensations, imagine things that make you feel safe. This can be the click of locking a door, the feeling of a shield on your arm, the weight of a thick jacket to protect your shoulders
Physical actions- actually lock your door, and put the intention of keeping out what you want kept out. Put on that jacket, imagine it as a barrier against harm.
Objects/correspondences. Put pieces of lodestone at the four corners of your space, carry a smoky quartz in your pocket, put a plant root on your altar/desk, a big round rock in your windowsill.
Black candle- light a black candle, set it in your space. Do not burn your house down.
Make a tea with protection herbs, and drink it before/during your spell or ritual. My suggestions would be anything with licorice, cloves, dandelion root, ginger, or cinnamon, but you can use whatever correspondences that work for you
Play music. Something soft that feels safe, or something fast that puts you in a fighting mood. Music can also be used for cleansing/banishing, if you’re mixing them all together into one ritual
Long term wards can be put in jars or sachets and placed somewhere innocuous. A capsule of black salt next to your door, a jar with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a piece of obsidian in your window.
Imbue your stuff with protective energy. This works well with clothing, crystals, herbs, and handheld objects like pens or water bottles. Make it an anchor for your protective energy.
Sigils. Write a protective sigil on the inside of your phone case, or a paper in your pocket of bag. Embroider a sigil on fabric.
Intention words or phrases work the same, though may take longer to embroider. Write a protective phrase on a paper, keep it in your pocket. Some good ones are- ‘I am safe’ or ‘I am protected from harm’ or ‘evil things stay away from me.’
Actual safety precautions- research the laws in your area. What’s the biggest knife you can carry, and what designs are legal. Walking sticks are always legal and can be used in self defense. Lots of online shops and sporting goods stores sell tactical pens, which are heavy and often have a pointed end.
In the same vein- good sturdy shoes, a thick jacket, a strong belt, a heavy bag.
