This day in history:

Peoples Temple leader Jim Jones and more than 900 of his followers commit suicide in Jonestown, Guyana.

The mass suicide took place hours after an investigation of the Temple by Congressman Leo Ryan, amid allegations of human rights violations on the part of Jim Jones.

Most of the followers within Jonestown died by drinking purple flavor-aid laced with cyanide.  Others, some unwillingly, used syringes to ingest the poison.
