We’ve all seen the ‘after being tortured whumpee has an absurdly high pain tolerance and caretaker has to ask them why they haven’t moved their hand away from the burning stove etc etc’ and while I do love that trope I raise you:

Whumpee who after being tortured becomes hypersensitive to pain, to the point where stubbing their toe or burning their mouth on hot food or the pressure of their bandages against their wounds is enough to send them spiraling into flashbacks and convince them that caretaker is just another whumper with more creative methods

Not feeling the pain might even be more terrifying. Only the view remains. And the sounds. The stomach-turning smell of his own blood. His fingers, clamped in place by complete shock. And the growing cold, slowly seeping into his whole trembling body.

" YOU'RE FINALLY AWAKE!!! THREE YEARS, WHUMPEE. I'VE WAITED THREE YEARS" keep on playing mind games until they start to believe you, only to shatter their new reality. Maybe they wake up with Whumper not around, believing they've been freed. WHumper's friends play into the delusion, just long enough for Whumper to get home before mocking a devastated Whumpee. Bored? Give them so much labour, they can barely walk after. hungry? force them to eat until they're puking lonely? Kidnap another person and keep gift them to Whumpee. Make sure they both know who's fault it is that they were taken.
