Rivals

Jiang Cheng tries not to be a self-centred person and usually he’s doing pretty well with that. He knows that if people look his way, they are mostly just looking for Wei Wuxian or actually watching whatever shenanigans he’s coming up with and very rarely at Jiang Cheng himself.

But lately, people have been staring at him a lot, even when Wei Wuxian isn’t there. Especially now that Wei Wuxian isn’t there anymore.

Jiang Cheng’s neck is itching with every step he takes through the Cloud Recesses and he can’t explain it. It had been fine for the first two or three weeks; right until Wei Wuxian had been sent home and after that the stares had intensified.

Was everyone waiting for Jiang Cheng to lose it without Wei Wuxian at his side? Are they waiting for him to be sent home as well? To bring disgrace to his Sect?

Jiang Cheng hates thinking about it, but it seems like he has to and there is really one person he can talk to about things like this.

“Huaisang,” Jiang Cheng hisses as he ducks into his room, glad to get out of the ever present stares these day.

“Oh, Jiang-xiong, what brings you here?” Nie Huaisang asks, fluttering his fan and not even pretending to look surprised that Jiang Cheng would just barge into his room.

“Is there something wrong with me?” Jiang Cheng asks, going straight to the point, and at least that catches Nie Huaisang’s attention.

“Why would there be?” he wants to know. “Are you not feeling well? Is something going on?”

Jiang Cheng can’t help but be a little pleased at hearing the clear concern in Nie Huaisang’s voice, because it’s nice to know that he isn’t just friends with Jiang Cheng because of Wei Wuxian, but clearly cares for Jiang Cheng himself.

“I’m doing fine, it’s just—” Jiang Cheng helplessly shrugs. “People keep staring at me. People don’t stare at me when Wei Wuxian is not there,” he explains, not that it seems to help Nie Huaisang much because he frowns at him.

“So you’re worried because people are staring at you?” he clarifies and Jiang Cheng nods, before he sinks down on the edge of Nie Huaisang’s bed.

“It doesn’t happen. I’m not interesting enough to get that much attention. There’s a reason I’m only ranked fifth on that damn list.”

Jiang Cheng tries to not let that bother him that even Jin Zixuan is ranked higher than he is, but sometimes, in the dead of night, it still stings. He doesn’t have any argument against Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji—they clearly deserve to be at the very top of the list, especially Lan Xichen with his beautiful face and his gentle manners and his perfect personality.

He even gets Wei Wuxian; he’s brilliant and fun and charismatic, so of course he would rank very high.

Now, Jin Zixuan on the other hand—Jiang Cheng doesn’t see the appeal at all.

He’s fairly certain that he’s stronger than the peacock and at least Jiang Cheng wouldn’t treat any fiancé of his like shit, but it seems that simply having Jin Guangshan as his father is enough to rank fairly high on that list.

“Oh,” Nie Huaisang breathes out and jolts Jiang Cheng out of his thoughts with that.

“What?” he snaps and Nie Huaisang fans himself again.

Xichenclipse 2021 Day 5

Marriage

Jiang Cheng tries not to think too much on his way to the Cloud Recesses, but he can’t deny that a ball of dread is forming in his stomach.

He knows why Lan Qiren is asking him to come personally, after everything that happened in the temple and Jiang Cheng is not looking forward to it. It wasn’t even Lan Xichen who sent him the letter and that alone says enough, in Jiang Cheng’s opinion.

Jiang Cheng hates how long it takes him to fly to the Cloud Recesses, despite going as fast as he dares to, because it leaves him too much time to think.

To re-think the promise he and Lan Xichen made all those years ago.

He knows that it’s neither his nor Lan Xichen’s fault that they are still not married, even though they have been betrothed for thirteen years but he can’t deny that over the last few months doubt started to creep in.

And now that he thought about it once, it makes sense.

It’s not like Jiang Cheng even believes that Lan Xichen wants out of this betrothal—he wouldn’t do that once he agreed to it in the first place, and Jiang Cheng does believe that Lan Xichen is at least fond of him—but maybe they are just not meant to be.

Maybe they should both look for other people already and put an end to whatever they have.

It would be easier, because Jiang Cheng cannot write or receive another message saying that the wedding is called off for now again.

Today will be the last time this happens, Jiang Cheng promises himself.

Jiang Cheng enters the Cloud Recesses with his jade token—which he intends to give back at the end of this talk—and he makes his way over to Lan Qiren’s quarters immediately.

He’s pretty sure he is being called here because after what happened with Jin Guangyao Lan Xichen is going to enter seclusion and Lan Qiren has the dubious honour of telling him that their marriage is yet again being delayed.

And Jiang Cheng can’t take it anymore.

He wants to be Lan Xichen’s husband more than anything—wants to be called husband in return—but only if Lan Xichen wants the same. And Jiang Cheng isn’t sure anymore if that is still the case.

sorry but if you ship lawlight but only during the yotsuba arc i’m going to assume that you’re boring and you probably think L is a much better person than he actually is

I completely missed the parallels in s4 between el and max, especially in episode 1

- theyre both struggling with grief and loss of a family member who they had mixed feelings about. billy had been paralleled to max's stepdad, and hopper had been compared to brenner. they're both girls who have grown up in violent and controlling environments, but we see them bond in season 3 as each others' only female friends amongst the nerds. they get to have fun being girls together and el grows massively as a person for it

then in season 4 she's immediately tossed into the deep end as soon as she was trying to find a sense of self. we don't see max's mom, but we hear that she drinks, and we see joyce also having wine and being sad, not that this is ever shown to affect her parenting. but max and el are both incredibly lost at this point in the absence of each others' only true friend, and they both become withdrawn from the people around them in trying to act like everything is fine - el trying not to show will when she's upset, and max trying not to show lucas that she's seeing things, and being defensive to the rest of the party.

in s4e1 we see el getting mocked in her presentation while max is walking out of the counsellor's, both in positions of vulnerability trying to move very fast and get away from the past which is clearly haunting them (and they're both talking about the past and the specific trauma they're dealing with in the scenes prior) and failing to.

they're also both being pursued by vecna, which i feel is likely intentional on his part because he can read max's mind and knows he can use killing her to break down eleven.

and max is also so relieved when el finally comes to save her, from vecna but also from everything he is bringing up - el's intervention is as a hero but also as emotional support after max has been so isolated and alone in her feelings for so long, and we never really get to see her and el bond over their mutual grief before she moves away, nor exchange letters about feeling each others' absence.

it would be nice if in season 5 we get a reunion from them that explores some of that in their relationship as it develops, if they decide to bring max back.

i also think it's noteworthy that el and will and max and mike are also kind of parallel characters? mike and max have a lot of sassiness & sark and strength in character for standing up for the people they love & their friends, and a lot of their feud comes from being the same kind of defensive bitch (especially of eleven) and bickering cos they're just the same person? and even in terms of like gender nonconformity, max is a masculine girl while mike is not necessarily effeminate but by being the weedy gay autistic phenotype is kind of inherently gnc.

and el and will are both the sensitive, impressionable counterpart who they fight for, who've also both come from violent backgrounds, experienced a load of trauma pertaining to the same one guy, have the same terrible fringe and cry and have ptsd episodes a lot.

which i think is relevant because for both will and mike and el and max, that separation really strains on all of them, and when they come back together they realise just how much they missed each other.
