Flawed characters are the ones we root for, cry over, and remember long after the story ends. But creating a character who’s both imperfect and likable can feel like a tightrope walk.
1. Flaws That Stem From Their Strengths
When a character’s greatest strength is also their Achilles' heel, it creates depth.
Strength: Fiercely loyal.
Flaw: Blind to betrayal or willing to go to dangerous extremes for loved ones.
“She’d burn the whole world down to save her sister—even if it killed her.”
2. Let Their Flaws Cause Problems
Flaws should have consequences—messy, believable ones.
Flaw: Impatience.
Result: They rush into action, ruining carefully laid plans.
“I thought I could handle it myself,” he muttered, staring at the smoking wreckage. “Guess not.”
3. Show Self-Awareness—or Lack Thereof
Characters who know they’re flawed (but struggle to change) are relatable. Characters who don’t realize their flaws can create dramatic tension.
A self-aware flaw: “I know I talk too much. It’s just… silence makes me feel like I’m disappearing.” A blind spot: “What do you mean I always have to be right? I’m just better at solving problems than most people!”
4. Give Them Redeeming Traits
A mix of good and bad keeps characters balanced.
Flaw: They’re manipulative.
Redeeming Trait: They use it to protect vulnerable people.
“Yes, I lied to get him to trust me. But he would’ve died otherwise.”
Readers are more forgiving of flaws when they see the bigger picture.
5. Let Them Grow—But Slowly
Instant redemption feels cheap. Characters should stumble, fail, and backslide before they change.
Early in the story: “I don’t need anyone. I’ve got this.”
Midpoint: “Okay, fine. Maybe I could use some help. But don’t get used to it.”
End: “Thank you. For everything.”
The gradual arc makes their growth feel earned.
6. Make Them Relatable, Not Perfect
Readers connect with characters who feel human—messy emotions, bad decisions, and all.
A bad decision: Skipping their best friend’s wedding because they’re jealous of their happiness.
A messy emotion: Feeling guilty afterward but doubling down to justify their actions.
A vulnerable moment: Finally apologizing, unsure if they’ll be forgiven.
7. Use Humor as a Balancing Act
Humor softens even the most prickly characters.
Flaw: Cynicism.
Humorous side: Making snarky, self-deprecating remarks that reveal their softer side.
“Love? No thanks. I’m allergic to heartbreak—and flowers.”
8. Avoid Overdoing the Flaws
Too many flaws can make a character feel unlikable or overburdened.
Instead of: A character who’s selfish, cruel, cowardly, and rude.
Try: A character who’s selfish but occasionally shows surprising generosity.
“Don’t tell anyone I helped you. I have a reputation to maintain.”
9. Let Them Be Vulnerable
Vulnerability adds layers and makes flaws understandable.
Flaw: They’re cold and distant.
Vulnerability: They’ve been hurt before and are terrified of getting close to anyone again.
“It’s easier this way. If I don’t care about you, then you can’t leave me.”
10. Make Their Flaws Integral to the Plot
When flaws directly impact the story, they feel purposeful rather than tacked on.
Flaw: Their arrogance alienates the people they need.
Plot Impact: When their plan fails, they’re left scrambling because no one will help them.
Flawed but lovable characters are the backbone of compelling stories. They remind us that imperfection is human—and that growth is possible.
Hold on okay I’m making a post about this
I’m just gonna more or less copy-past what I sent in discord
but
I’ve got a theory abt the whole invisibility thing tying into watcher/canary lore
He’s not the canary anymore bc he’s mastered the ability to go unseen by Them this season.
But he’s always had the ability. He’s just gotten better at it.
They’ve actually been targeting him, making him the canary, BECAUSE of that power. They wanted to give him less time to realize or use it. They hate those They can’t control.
Let me tie it into last life.
Last life was his second season; he knew how bad the first one went and didn’t wanna go through it again. He didn’t want to be targeted and out first again. So he tried to go unseen; maybe using powers he didn’t realize he had. Got overlooked by his whole team, never got a life when he started with two, no one even realized that bc they overlooked him. They didn’t even realize they were overlooking him until he acted out, confused on why even his allies weren’t helping him. They just… forgot he was there, and he didn’t realize he was causing it
Double Life, he didn’t use his power, bc he had tango and he didn’t want to be overlooked or invisible. He had a great time with his rancher, but the watchers were able to target him and cause very unlucky deaths
Limited, he was still figuring things out. Maybe he started to catch onto it when it came to Grian’s afk session, idk, you could probably do something with that. But he also didn’t really use the power much, resigned to his fate
Secret life he started testing it out again, mostly as a yellow. He wanted to be able to watch people without them noticing him, and the power started to get activated slightly. Watchers were already pulled thin with fighting the listeners; him unknowingly activating his power allowed him to slip through the cracks completely as things started going down
They were quick to rectify that.
But this season? He knows what’s going on. He knows how to use his power to hide from Them without hiding from his friends. Maybe he learned in Real Life, where Their eyes didn’t track him and everyone could mess around with their abilities without Their interference. Either way, he knows, now. He can start to *do* something about it. He can hide from them (and occasionally slip in a prayer or two, so they don’t get too suspicious of his absence. Oh, he’s still there. They’re listening to his prayers like, he thinks he can convince Them to leave him alone; how cute. Meanwhile he’s hiding in plain sight, distracting Them with prayers that are just an act)
And this session gives him invisibility and it just feels right, and Jimmy realizes just how useful it is to not be Watched.
@tvvigjuice you mentioned wanting this list.
Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
I think we as a society moved on from scar calling tango and etho mom and dad TOO fast
mother gothel is an amazing representation of how rich people want everything for themselves and never want to share, even though sharing means that others get the thing too and they still get just plenty from it.
why is mother gothel rich you ask?
Rapunzel's hair must have taken so much maintenance to not be a tangled mess
she has no actual job yet somehow manages to raise a more or less well rounded child (rapunzel can somehow read, paint, clean, knit, cook, do ballet, chess, pottery, and sew? even if rapunzel somehow managed to figure out all that on her own, she'd definitely have had to have gotten the materials for rapunzel, which is expensive) and live a decent lifestyle
Eats things like hazelnut soup. Hazelnuts are not cheap, and hazelnut soup seems like something only a rich person would do
Grian didn't mean to kill Scar, he just meant to scare him so the prank happens and Scar is immediately out of the game.
As Skizz's death had nothing to do with Scar his death remains, Skizz is the second one out.
BdoubleO still falls to his death while building his base, he's the third one out.
Joel and Jimmy don't die yet because even they know better then to risk their only life in Dare to Flare...a game which probably isn't even ever a thing in an hardcore server.
As Jimmy is still alive he does set off Grians trap killing himself and Ren, they are the fourth and fifth players out.
Without Ren and to a smaller extent Skizz Red Winter™ never comes and a grieving Scott is left to seek revenge with Grian as his main target... The timeline splits severely.
Without Scar and Monopoly mountain Grian likely stays with BigB.
Martyn trying to get revenge for Ren probably teams with Scott in trying to get Grian.
That arrow game where Tango AND Etho die realistically doesn't happen with only one life.
Joel maybe still gets in a fight with Cleo and dies though probably in a different way but let's assume he doesn't.
Without Scar or Jimmy and with Grian and Scott in opposite teams Etho doesn't get shot.
Cleo still dies when trying to get Martyn, I'm almost sure of it. They are the sixth player out.
Monopoly Mountain vs Dogwarts never happens... Instead It's Grian and BigB vs Scott and Martyn with some other players on each side...based on characterisation I'm going to say Joel goes with Grian and Impulse with Martyn... I am unsure about Etho...
It's impossible that nobody dies, considering everyones pvp ability BigB is probably the seventh player out.
Tango is probably killed soon after much like in the og timeline though in a different way considering Ren is not here to kill him... Making him either eight or ninth out. Why? Because Martyn still dies to the skeleton which means it only depends on who dies first.
Impulse is never killed by Scar since he's out, however he still dies as Grian would still plan a surprise attack making him the tenth one out.
Joel being so unhinged means that even without Ren he still dies in the fight, possibly soon after Impulse, he's the eleventh out.
Grian (and possibly Etho depending on which side he took) are likely unable to kill Scott, so he lives.
Etho still dies around this time like in the og timeline as well, likely trying to kill Scott if on Grians side. He's the Twelfth player out of the game putting him in third place.
Scott and Grian are the only ones lefts, Scott likely wants a fair fight, so does Grian. Neither of them trows the game, It's a 1 v 1... And between the two of them Scott is the best equipped to win.
The first winner is The Star.
(Last Life)
What I am gathering from current fandom discussion
Quick question for no particular reason, but how do I commit Tumblr voter fraud?
I know Canary in a Coal Mine is a song people associate with Jimmy a lot, but like, putting aside the canary symbolism for a second, that song is also super Scott coded, right?
