I.. honestly had no idea you had finals when you're doing your doctorate. they never go away, do they.

It’s not final exams, it’s final papers. Most seminar courses (of which we take five, plus four other courses, over three semesters) will require an “article-length” paper, which usually means 20-25 pages.
