Kite as a Narrative Foil to Killua

Goddamn I love writing meta so here’s some more meta. A huge thank you to @owlphallacies for helping me revise this monster!

In this I’m going to be talking about something that’s been percolating in my brain for a long time: the relationship that Kite and Killua have to each other as characters. Specifically, that Kite is likely to be a narrative foil to Killua. A narrative foil is a literary device that contrasts two things (plots, settings, characters, etc) by either setting them up as ‘completely different’ or ‘extremely similar except for one key difference’. This example would be the latter, definitely, and as a matching set Ging is certainly a foil to Gon (there’s a lot to say there, but this is already a 20 page Word doc so  >.>  I’ll just touch on it at times).

It’s not unreasonable for Kite and Ging to be a ‘previous generation’ version of Killua and Gon given how that’s a common thing in shonen manga—One Piece, for example, is rife with characters inheriting the unfulfilled dreams of their mentors. It’s a good way to establish character motivation, in that case, but in this one would more of a catalyst for character development than protagonist-vs-antagonist plot events.

tl; dr: In all likelihood Kite acts as a narrative foil to Killua through his relationship to Ging, which is similar to Killua and Gon’s except that the power imbalance is more exaggerated. On the more theoretical side, I predict that what prompts Gon and Killua to truly air out their respective issues and begin working to improve their relationship will be the dramatic destruction of Kite and Ging’s, proving the consequences of allowing such issues to fester over time.

My boyfriend just woke up, mostly still asleep and told me “don’t worry, it’s getting better” in a heavy, American accent, which is unusual for an Australian man.

“Why are you American?” I asked, to which I got:

“Sorry, it’s getting better” in a stereotypical posh English accent.

“Why are you English?” I asked, amused.

“What is he normally?” He managed to ask.

“He? You’re not anyone else, you’re you.”

“Ugh, me” was the last thing he said, in a right proper Aussie accent before he fell back into proper sleep.

It’s crazy and fucked up that being yourself is actually the solution.

Freshly adopted Jason, who is so used to taking care of his mother that the first morning in the manor, he wakes up in early hours to cook for Bruce, too.

Logically speaking, he understands that Bruce doesn't need it — he is a healthy adult, and they have Alfred — but it is six in the morning, and his mind is foggy, so he just follows his instincts. Maybe he does not even realise that mom is not here, after all.

Alfred finds him in the weakly dimmed kitchen when he finishes his walk around the Manor before starting with his chores. He is amused at first, stopping quietly behind the child. He is doing great (that's a surprise since Dick intentionally just stirred more trouble), and Alfred can't help but smile a little.

'Good morning, master Jason. If you are hungry, you should wake me up the next time. I promise to take care of you.'

Jason blinks owlishly, still awfully sleepy. His eyes are barely opened, his hands working on the automat.

'Breakfast,' he mumbles, frowning a little. 'For mom- I mean, for dad.'

Alfred's smile falters. His original impression shifts in a late realisation.

Oh.

'Master Jason, you shouldn't really-'

'Finished,' he yawns, putting a one — just one, nothing for himself at all — plate in front of Alfred.

It is a very simple dish, scrambled eggs with some black paper and toasted bread — but not even made in a toaster, just on the pan; this kid probably doesn't know how to use toasters. It smells nice, Alfred compliments mentally.

'Can you-' He yawns. 'Pass to-'

And then little Jason falls asleep helplessly, falling right in Alfred's arms. He catches him, of course. This boy weighs nothing at all.

'Hey, Al,' Bruce sticks his head in the kitchen, no less sleepy. 'What is going on?'

Alfred explains to Bruce what happened, and he is no less distraught. He helps him to put Jason in the bed and eats all the breakfast he prepared, with a mixture of delight and despair.

And when Jason wakes up, embarrassed by the faint memories of the early morning, Alfred puts a big plate in front of him, filled with so much food that his big blue eyes light up instantly.

'Bon appetite, master Jason,' he smiles. 'Your cooking had passed my personal standards for a cook. You are a good soldier.'

Jason giggles, his mouth already stuffed with bacon.

'That I am.'

And that he always will be.

I think that one of my favorite things is just knowing a song my parents put on, thinking that its not something that anyone outside their generation would know and I do. I just know it.

"Oh, you wouldn't know this song, its from when I was in highschool"

I DO. AND IT MAKES ME HAPPY WHEN YOU GET ALL EXCITED THAT I KNOW IT BECAUSE YOU MAKE ME HAPPY AND I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPY AND SUPRISED

It's like, 10:52pm and I have online school tomorrow.

this is great not being able to sleep so I'm posting here.

yay.

i was talking to max about how my hometown in NC has changed since he’s been gone and he pointed out that our town is quickly becoming a wtnv situation. for instance: 

apparently our high school, which is 96 years old and looks like a 16th century gothic castle (complete with lion gargoyles), has a fourth floor that no one really knew about until this year. no one knows how long it’s been in the building but from pictures it looks completely different than the rest and has a strange metal staircase in a spiral pattern. 

there is also a basement in the high school with a swimming pool but no one is allowed down there and it is starting to rot the first floor.

for a good while there was a nice elderly black man that would stand outside of random stores and street corners and dance to make people smile. however, in the past few months he has disappeared and is nowhere to be found.

we have a kapstone paper mill in our town and it is regularly normal but some days the smell is absolutely overwhelming and blankets the town like a thick fog.

the abandoned movie theater is blocked off to the public but i was talking to some girls from school about it who occasionally break in to chill what it is like on the inside, and they said that there is a giant, bottomless hole in the entrance’s floor so they have to tiptoe across a single plank of wood to get to the other side. 

fairly popular places in town will close down for literally no reason. 

one time a tornado came through our town and it destroyed the sonic drive-in and a car dealership next to it but no debris could be found. only the empty lots were there. they rebuilt the sonic in less than a month but the car rental lot was kept empty and now bored teenagers harp around it like vultures.

one time my grandmother saw an unidentified animal in our backyard. she thought it was a fox but when my dog barked at it, it stood up on its back legs and ran away.

fox and coyote sightings are becoming strangely frequent in one single area of town and no one knows why???? its like they all congregate near a horse stable by an old junkyard my cousin used to work at.

whenever a dog runs away from home they all end up coming to my house. every dog that gets loose.

my grandmother saw an unidentified bird in a tree and i still can’t figure out what kind it was based on her description. 

sometimes you can hear random gunshots and loud, unknown bestial screams in the uptown areas

there’s probably more but i don’t really get out much. these are just things that i’ve witnessed myself or is common knowledge in town.
