Time for another Rick and Morty body language analysis post since people seemed to really enjoy my last one!
There’s a scene in the season 5 finale that I’ve been thinking about for a long time. When Rick and Morty and trying to escape the Citadel, just before their final confrontation with Evil Morty:
Morty is trying to ask Rick questions, while Rick continuously blows him off and insists that they focus at the task at hand. “We’re back to simple adventures!” he says. Morty shouldn’t concern himself with Rick’s secrets or his past.
And the shot above always seemed familiar to me, in a way. And I was able to place where I recognized it from:
^ this is an official promotional image for Rick and Morty (season 4, I believe) that I’ve seen around a lot. There’s a lot of wallpapers and posters using it. You may recognize it too
And in many ways, the scene from the season 5 finale reminded me of it. Rick leading Morty, his arms outstretched and raised. Come on, Morty! Follow me into our next adventure! Classic Rick and Morty!! 100 years!
But in the scene, Morty stops.
He doesn’t follow. He stops and says “No, I don’t trust you. I don’t want to do this anymore if I’m not gonna get straight answers from you.”
In this scene Rick is physically positioned below Morty, bringing them down to eye level. Equals. Rick is even the one extending forward, almost pleadingly for Morty to trust him.
People other than me have pointed out that Rick’s body language with Morty is often dominating and intimidating when he’s trying to control him. He quite literally towers over him as a threatening force
Although as time goes on, these classic scenes become repeated with Morty now standing beside Rick and joining in the fun as much more of an equal
And building upon that idea, of Rick coming to respect Morty more and Morty respecting himself enough to demand honesty, I thought it was pretty brilliantly staged.
