The opposite of anxiety is not calmness, it is desire. Anxiety and desire are two, often conflicting, orientations to the unknown. Both are tilted toward the future. Desire implies a willingness, or a need, to engage this unknown, while anxiety suggests a fear of it. Desire takes one out of oneself, into the possibility of relationship, but it also takes one deeper into oneself. Anxiety turns one back on oneself, but only onto the self that is already known. There is nothing mysterious about the anxious state; it leaves one teetering in an untenable and all too familiar isolation. There is rarely desire without some associated anxiety: We seem to be wired to have apprehension about that which we cannot control, so in this way, the two are not really complete opposites. But desire gives one a reason to tolerate anxiety and a willingness to push through it.

i'm tired of reading about women having unfulfilling sex with their male partners and religious guilt and how the internet is affecting our ability to connect with each other and ultraspecific references to name-brand products and disaffected writers writing disaffected prose about how disaffected they are and thinly-veiled elite university campuses and conspicuously nameless first-person protagonists and bargain bin nihilism and sparse utilitarian language and marriage plots and conflicted feelings about motherhood and metacommentary and vaguely liberal politics. i want to read just one beautiful sentence

I have noticed that when all the lights are on, people tend to talk about what they are doing — their outer lives. Sitting round in candlelight or firelight, people start to talk about how they are feeling – their inner lives.
To sit alone without any electric light is curiously creative. I have my best ideas at dawn or at nightfall, but not if I switch on the lights — then I start thinking about projects, deadlines, demands, and the shadows and shapes of the house become objects, not suggestions, things that need to done, not a background to thought.

@keiynanlonsdale: That pure wonder you had as a kid is not lost forever, I promise you. The truth is that it can become infinitely more amazing as you grow up & glow up - that happens only when despite your very awareness of life’s painful challenges & heart breaks… you learn how to see the light anyway and you use it to keep moving & smiling! Let go of yourself, let go of the mind that tells you stories, let go of all the judgement & all expectation. Just simply… be. That’s joy. 🌻🌻🌻❤️❤️❤️🌊🌊🌊👑👑👑🤙🏾🤙🏾🤙🏾🌈🌈🌈🔑🔑🔑🌎🌍🌏
