Hey you know that thing you're good at? That thing you think makes you valuable? The way you are, or the thing you do, etc?

You can be and deserve to be and will be loved and cherished even without it.

You're not worthwhile because you help, or you are good at making your art, or your skills at your job. You're worthwhile inherently, as a person, even without all that.

And I want you to internalize that because otherwise there might come a day where you can't do The Thing You Think Makes You Valuable. You'll get sick and can't draw, you'll burn out and can't do your job, you'll be emotionally unable to do your regular helpfulness for whatever reason, and you'll start to feel like you have no worth anymore.

But that's not true. You have worth, you deserve comfort and companionship and happiness, and that's not a conditional thing. You deserve that, even if you can't be Useful and Productive and all that shit.

It's an easy trap to fall into to justify yourself as "well, at least I help/make art/work hard" and have that be entirely too much of your self-esteem. Being proud of your work is fine. Being proud of yourself solely through your productivity is not, because you're making it conditional. And conditional on something that can change for reasons completely outside your control!

You gotta stop thinking about it like you gotta justify the space you take up on the planet. It's great if all those things make you happy: just make sure they're not the only things that make you feel like you are justifying your existence, or you'll crater if they get taken away.

You are lovable and likable and you have value as a person and a member of society, even if you never can be productive again. You are enough.

it was always "pretty girls" and "beautiful women" shown to me, described to me. men were "handsome", but that's not an aesthetic judgement. it's a recommendation for marriage that could be based on other traits.

yet, it still feels wrong to use the same descriptions. masculine men are still, generally, not pretty to me. but i. i want to kiss them so much. i want a better word. help.

being attracted to men is not shameful or regrettable and if you think this is a 'needlessly arguing for the norm in a community of outsiders' post then you're part of the problem

i think part of what bothers me (among many other things) about the dilution of punk on here lately is that it erases so many other subcultures.

like, a lot of people on here seem so desperate to label themselves and anything they like as punk despite it not having any relation to punk music or aesthetics (which, yes, is necessary to associate something with a music-based subculture), because they're hoping to get non-conformist brownie points on the non-conformist website. and if you really are non-conforming to a great deal of present social norms, that's great, but that doesn't mean you're punk, because punk doesn't have a monopoly on non-conforming.

the term you are looking for is counterculture, and there are many of them. there were many of them before punk, and there have been many of them since punk.

what do you think hippies were/are? why do you think conservatives hated them so much? are you gonna call hippies punk too? what about rap, hip hop, reggae? disagreeing with the status quo is not purely a punk thing, and we are doing so many countercultures a great disservice by pretending like anything that disagrees with something is punk.

it's not just musical subcultures either. many of us are already part of a non-conformist counterculture simply by partaking in queer culture. if you don't like punk music and styles, you aren't punk, but that's fine. calm down. take this coming from a punk as myself: if we have the same political goals, but you don't like my weird crusty bands, you are not punk, and i will still be delighted to throw bricks with you.
